Disney Wonder Sept 3-7, 2006

My dh and two older girls and bil and niece are doing the banana boat at 1:30. I'm going to be on the beach with sil and the two 6 year olds.
I think you should just keep doing what you are doing and hopefully the shark thing will pass Although..... you don't see me risking life and limbs on the banana boat ride just kidding. I would be going too if my 6 year old could go.

We are going to do the dinner with Shamu on fri after the cruise and spend the day at Sea World so I think we are going to skip the sting ray excursion. It sounds like a lot of fun though. Hmmm maybe I should do this with my DD 6 while the others are getting eaten by sharks er I mean doing the banana boat ride

You crack me up. I never heard "Pooh sized" before but will gladly admit to it.

I also have a humdinger of a scar on my knee but am SO THANKFUL that it does not prohibit anything I want to do that I don't give a hoot who sees it. My Sister in law will not wear shorts or skirts that show her knees because she has a straight line scar from ligament repair surgery. My scar is about the size of a Tablespoon, but I can bend that knee better than the other one which has a touch of arthritis. So you all will get a show--a Pooh sized lady with a scar. I just try not to pose for pictures with Minnie when I am in a swim suit.

Sorry I'm so behind, I can't believe I've missed so much!

This talk of scars reminded me to warn you guys. My son has some very large scars from abdominal surgery he had as a baby, and they will be very prominent when he's in a swim suit. We don't mind answering questions, so don't worry about shushing kids who want to know, but sometimes he can be a bit embarrassed by the attention. I wanted to warn you because they can be shocking at first sight.

(especially if they involve telling me what it is like riding dumbo we never made it back to disneyland and I've never been to WDW so feel free to tell me how boring the Dumbo ride is, and how you're sure I didnt miss anything and its not nearly as great as I think it is.....) siiiiiigh

LOL Lunasmum, I think the Dumbo ride is TERRIBLY boring. But I understand completely! My parents took me to Disneyland in 1980, and the Matterhorn was closed. When I returned with my husband and children in 2002, it was closed again! We loved our trip that time and made plans to return in 2004, at which time, guess what? The Matterhorn was closed. I finally got to ride the Matterhorn for the first time in 2005, and while I can't say it was worth the wait, I can say that I had a thoroughly good time. I hope you get your Dumbo ride, and I hope that it's everything you dreamed of!

It was finally letting me reserve things last night! Michael and I are now, happily, booked to go Parasailing at 9AM. Michael has a Well Being Massage at 5:45-7 on Sunday and I've got that other one, with the Seaweed wrap? from 6-7:30. After that, we're going to eat at Palo at 8:30 that night. I also reserved a Manicure and Pedicure but it just depends on where I am, money whise, as to whether or not I'll use the appointments.. Also reserved the Stingray Adventure, to substitute swimming with the dolphins.

I work in a rehab hospital with burn and car crash victims, so it takes alot to shock me! Though I know alot of people get squeamish about things like that. I guess I got over being squeamish a long time ago, you can't make it long in a hospital if you can't handle looking at shocking injuries......though I still hate needles.
DH calls on me if the dogs need any "minor procedures" - tick removal, anything involving blood, administration of medecines, ear cleaning, lol. So I guess I'll go ahead and warn him!

Did anyone catch the Modern Marvels show on the History Channel that was all about WDW? It was so cool! Even my husband, who is a former cast member, was fascinated by much of the stuff. He said "now I want to run up to Epcot!"

Many people appreciate the skill of the MDs that enabled the problem to be fixed. The scar is just the mark of their work, nothing to be ashamed of.

If it helps him to see other people with scars, come find me. Our kids are grown so we will be at the adult pool and we have late dining, so may not see each other at all.

Dawn G I'm sure no one will give it a second thought but good of you to givr the heads up. Along those same lines my 8 year old dd was diagnosed last year with type 1 diabetes so she is constantly checking her blood (especially when swimming) and gives herself injections for all meals and snacks. We tend to just think its "normal" so she does it everywhere. I apologize ahead of time if you are squeemish of needles We didn't link dining but if you are sitting near us you probably wouldn't even notice her giving herself her shot

Well, while we're giving everyone the "heads up," my youngest (DS10) has psoriasis. If you're not familiar (sp?) with psoriasis, its a skin disorder that is not contagious (more genetic). It used to only be on his elbows and scalp, but this summer it seems to be spreading so we've got to figure out how to get it more under control. He's a little self conscience about it, but we try to blow it off like its no big deal (but I do feel so bad for him ). I am, however, always afraid someone will think he has something contagious and won't want him in the water or something. It hasn't happened yet, but he's only had it a little over a year.

suzannef - while I am sqeemish about needles, I am also used to seeing them - my husband is diabetic too. So he'll be pricking his finger and giving himself shots right there with your daughter.

Well, as my son gets older, it gets less and less attention. When he was younger, I would honestly get reactions like I had cut him myself. I guess the younger the kid, the more shocking a scar that big is. His runs from hip to hip, and he has a few others on his chest, and a colostomy scar underneath it. We've been lucky in that his best friend also had intestinal surgery (what are the odds of that!) so they have very similar scars.

Suzanne, I'm not going to be bothered at all by needles. We're familiar with diabetes in our house, too.

Luv2Travel, I have psoriasis too. I've always heard that sunlight helps, and my doctor recently prescribed a cream with very light steroids in it. I was concerned about the steroids, but he said that it was extremely mild. I like to go to Wild Oats and get some tea tree oil or aloe vera oil, or both, and add a few drops to my body lotion.

MY DD has eczema pretty bad. My dad found this cream and I didnt believe it at first when it said you will see a difference in 2 days but BOY what a difference!!!!!

Thanks so much blackunicorn and purplern for the suggestions. We are at the "we'll try anything" mode. He has a cream that he applies to his psoriasis now, but it has yet to completely get rid of it and he seems to be breaking out more these days. I don't want to put him on any prescribed oral meds as I haven't heard anything good about them. The sun and water definitely help, but again, it doesn't get it under control. We'll give these suggestions a try, thanks again.

You know, the scars, the needles, the skin conditions, the fluffiness (pooh sized) that we've been expressing concerns over probably would have never really been noticed (at least not by my family). But it is comforting and helpful to know about others concerns so that I will be mindful that everyone has their own difficulties in life (usually much worse than mine) and that I should be an encouragement to others and stress less over my own worries. Did that come out right? Do you know what I mean?

I couldn't have said it any better myself! We all have something! Then again, life would be pretty boring if we were all perfect. Nobody is perfect nor do they have a perfect life...they're just not telling!

2. HOLIDAY WEEKEND TRAVEL WARNING

Okay, Not that I think Labor Day is as big as 4th of july in terms of travel but I wanted to share this:

DS was suppose to fly out of Charlotte direct to St Loius on Saturday 7/1 to visit his dad. His flight left at 10:45am. Traffic was much worse than I anticipated and we got there with less time than I wanted 45 minutes until takeoff. (yes I know not good) however Charlotte is not a big airport at all. Anyway, we stand in this ridiculous line and by the time I get to the counter it's 26 minutes until takeoff. They say the bag can't go, I say fine I can mail it Monday and throw some stuff into his backpack. She calls down to try and get the bag on and the next thing I know I'm told we are too late to board the plane and we have to leave the next day on the same flight. I was too late. I was like the guy ahead of us is on the same flight and you let him on She just kept saying "too late" and shoved another ticket for Sunday into my hand. My DS7 has a complete meltdown and start crying because how could I been such a horrible mother to let this happen? DS hasn't seen his dad in 8 months.

Next day is Sunday 7/2. We end up taking DS on Sat to a local theme park and staying overnight in Charlotte at a hotel. Get there with 1 hr and 15 min until deprture. All is well. Except the flight takes off 20 minutes late. When I ask the gate attendant what's up? she explains that all flights that weekend were overbooked and they were negotiating with passengers to get them to voluntarily bump. Offering incentives and such. So I tell her my story and low and behold, we were bumped. Figured they could blame me and not give me any perk for bumping. I thought it was weird that I was late and it was "my fault he couldn't go" and there was no charge for missing my flight and changing the ticket.

Long story summation: when you come to FL for the cruise, get to the airport at least 1 hr and 15 minutes in advance. The airline industry is going to take advantage of holiday travel and do not care if they bump you.

Sorry so long. Just wanted to warn you.

Too many great things to quote here, but I have to say I am "feeling the love".....it is so nice to be on a thread full of such honest and caring people, and I'm so glad to be able to share the best boat in the world with all of you in two short months!
