I used to be obsessed with the underground railroad. my mom took me to a play abput Harriet Tubman as a teen and it just made such an impression on me. it still amazes me today what we did to those people just because of the color of their skin:sad2:

Yep! I always grew up with that history in KY because so many were used to farm tobacco.. and when I was little I thought all KY had were horses and tobacco.. :rotfl:
The house that Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote that book.. uncle tom's cabin.. was right down the road from whereI lived, too. Historic little town!

Bye.. :rolleyes1

I saw a play about Harriet Tubman when I was in elementary/middle school too! I don't really remember too much about it though...that was forever ago!:rotfl: It amazes me too that people were able to enslave other people over such a small difference...even to enslave someone at all!:sad2:

I got one more page done.....I need to rest my brain for a little while. Poor Oscar hasn't even been out for his evening walk! We usually go by 6 :rolleyes1

Yeah.. I just thought it might help. it's tropical!

Hi Heidi! Bye Heidi ;) ... I am actually going to TRY to get to bed at a reasonable time tonight! Catch you tomorrow.

Have a great night!

Phew I am FINALLY down to 200 pictures for my album!:goodvibes

Congrats! It's tough sometimes. I sat down a few weeks ago trying to figure out which pictures from the Cruise I wanted in the album I bought onboard.

I went ahead and bought those one albums I was talking about earlier though.. 2 and 2.. not very creative but it works! :thumbsup2

Three more days and I can go shopping for a whole new wardrobe! :yay:

Good (early) morning! I just got done submitting Conor's application for school choice for high school next year. (We have to rank the 4 high schools in our district zone.) He has sibling preference since Logan's already there but nothing is a guarantee here. Crazy system! :scared: After this, I'm done 'til Teia goes to middle school. Then the fun starts again. :scared:  We'll find out if he got his first choice in March.

Hope everyone has a good day. I am off to rest until it's time to get Teia up.

You have to pick which high school you want to go to?? That's weird and random. Ours was a given. Of course if you didn't want to go there you could always choose to go to Good Council (a private school) or Poolesville (I don't know why so many people choose to go there instead of my high school...I don't even know where it is!:confused3 ). But I guess if they're all close by your house?:confused3 Scary! I hope he gets to go to Logan's school and be with his big brother!:goodvibes Hopefully Logan's nothing like Hayley...one day she saw me in school and screamed ahh it's my sister!!!:lmao:

This is going to be long...sorry! ;)

We actually have to pick schools when our kids start elementary, middle & high school. Once you're in a school, you can stay there. If you're not happy, you can try for a different school within your zone again the same year, or the following year. We have 40 elementary schools, 16 middle schools and 11 high schools. Along with specialty schools (K-8, high tech centers, charter schools, etc... we have 101 schools in our district.) Our county is divided into zones, and then sub zones. Depending on the schools closest to where you live, you have to number all the schools, from the one you want the most, to the one you want the least. The information is entered into the computer and it decides where you child will go. There are two batches of student assignment. If you don't apply during the first period, it's pretty likely that you won't get one of your top choices.

The reason for all of this? The desegration law in our area has expired. Kids used to be bussed out of their neighborhood to other schools for racial balance. Now they give you the choice of where you want you child to attend school. You have a better chance if you have a sibling already in the school that you want, or you live within close proximity. Unfortunately, we have several elementary schools near us but the middle schools and high schools aren't as close. Logan did not get his first choice for high school when we applied, but he later auditioned and got into a good school with an Arts program.

So... today was the first day of student assigment. Parents have until early March to submit their preferences. We'll find out in early April if Conor got his first choice. (I have heard horror stories where families have three kids in three different elementary schools! )

Wish us luck!

Sorry for rambling! I'd never heard of anything so wacky in my life until they started doing it here! :scared:

Wow Lisa I have never heard of such a thing. So theoretically 5 kids living within 2 blocks of each other in the same grade could go to 5 different schools??!! Man I thought just hoping for the right teacher was bad. I can't imagine hoping for the right school:sad2:

Yup! Most of our neighborhood kids go to different schools. Teia's best friends here go to three different elementary schools. Our one neighbor has two boys, both in 10th grade, one goes with Logan, one goes somewhere else... voluntarily!

The saddest part is that some are considered "good" schools. They have high test scores, great teachers, and are very desirable. Some have a handful of openings after siblings are all factored in. Then there are the low schoools.... lots of transient kids (short term residents, migrant farm workers, etc...) with low test scores, low parental involvement, not always in great areas. I don't know if this plan helps or hurts those kind of schools. :confused3

When Logan started Kindergarten, there was a geographical school that he was supposed to go to. It wasn't the greatest, not as close to my house as other schools, lots of transient kids. At the time, my only other choice was to apply for a Magnet School. I entered a lottery, and he got in! This school was in a lousy neighborhood, about 20 minutes from here (40 minute bus ride). But... it was a hidden secret. There were the greatest teachers, good administration, excellent curriculum. Logan did amazingly well. Sadly, the principal left, and one summer 28 teachers quit. This was when Conor was in 4th grade, Logan was already in middle school. Fourteen staff members from that school left and went to the school that Teia is now in. A 4th grade opening arose on a Friday, I transferred Conor in that Monday. It was a very difficult choice but in the end, it paid off greatly. I have been happy with the school ever since.
