Disney Wonder Jan 23, 2011

Steve, I hope you get over your bug very soon.

As for Carnival, it sounds like most of the passengers thought the incident was handled well. In reading up on this incident, however, I did discover that Holland-America, whom we are taking to Alaska, actually lost a ship in 1980. Thankfully, everyone was rescued and there was no loss of life.

Kris

Did you know that Holland America was originally White Star Line (only a change of name) and that they are the ones who called in and went to the sinking of the Titanic to rescue all of the people in the water? :thumbsup2 On a side note, I LOVE Holland America!

I don't recall settling on a place or time. I'd suggest something like 2:30 on the day of embarkation in the Promenade Lounge, but I'm open. We can do the pool deck as well, but it will be more crowded.

Kris

We had said something like 3:00, but 2:30 could work too. I also don't remember which lunge we said, but promenade sounds good. I will have Ryan post and let everyone know for sure. I will also post about the bracelets in a day or so. Sorry...really tired and have a headache.

On a side note Kris - I had to email potential professors for next semester and beg them to allow me to miss the 2nd week of school with no penalty. The catalog came out for next semester and I was hoping to get around everything by taking online classes - but 3 of the 5 classes I need are on campus only. :( Ryan and I looked into canceling the cruise but we were 5 days late from the DVC cancellation deadline and found out we would lose 76 of our 208 points! I emailed the professors to see what they would say, but if it's a toss up between school and a vacation - I choose school. I will keep everyone posted, but I'm hoping my teachers will work with me and that it won't be a problem.

Good night. :)

I did notknow that and that's quite fascinating to know. I did just seen a book about the sinking of the HAL ship on Amazon, but the reviews weren't very good, so I skipped it.

I'm excited to try HAL, but it will be interesting to see how DS responds since Disney is his only memorable cruise experience and every time he sees a cruise ship in San Diego or on TV he thinks it's "Mickey's Boat."

Oh Jessica that would be awful if you couldn't make it!! I feel like you and Ryan both have put so much into this thread/planning etc! I hope it works out for you two. We'll all keep our fingers crossed!

Jessica,

Not that this is an ideal solution, but if you're looking for online classes you could take them elsewhere. Otherwise, email and I can give you my contact number to provide to the professors should they need another college professor to proctor some assignment. I don't know I it will help, but you could try. Also reassure them that you don't have plans to miss any other classes.

Kris

Hey, they can still be friends, right?:)

forwarded email to the wrong email address for my daughter...how embarrassing not to know it..I usually send her facebook messages!!! will re-send once she lets me know how I messed it up (the email address).

just back from caribbean cruise where it rained 4 of 7 days (but it was warm rain).....no relaxing.

started off to a bad start as my DD did NOT have a birth certificate or letter from absent parent, altho she had a passport for her little boy -- who has his fathr's last name, rather than mom's. Celebrity would not let us board. I was livid (at daughter, not celebrity)...her excuse was "well, disney didn't even ask to see it last time"....my response: 'THIS IS NOT DISNEY AND I DON'T CARE IF THEY DIDN'T ASK; IT IS IN THE REQUIREMENTS!!!!")

TWO HOURS later, faxed birth certificate, we were on board. stress stress stress.

so, please -- words of warning. make sure you have extra documentation for children if you are single, divorced, etc.

Flew into San Diego last night and saw the carnival slendor. May pack an extra flashlight just in case.

Karen,

I can't imagine how stressful that must have been to start a cruise; I'm glad it all worked out in the end. Sorry for the bad weather; hopefully we'll do betting in January.

Cori, you're so sweet. Trust me, Ryan and I don't want to cancel and we're doing everything in our power to make sure that doesn't happen. But - it comes down to school being more important. Cross your fingers for us and hopefully everything will work out! :thumbsup2

Kris - that's so kind of you, you're a doll! I emailed all three professors around midnight last night and just told them the truth: We booked a vacation over a year ago when I hadn't been planning on transferring and thought I would be out of school. Now (excitingly) we've agreed that I can proceed with school and transfer, but in the excitement we forgot we booked a non-refundable vacation. yadda yadda . . . and asked if I would be permitted to miss class, if I could submit the work via email, do it prior to class, etc. and (depending on their answers to those questions), would missing what I would miss put me in a place where I would not be capable of earning the A I strive for. So far 2 of the three teachers responded and it seems alright - both say I cannot make up work, and BOTH said they give a test EVERY class, so I will miss 2 tests/quizzes in each class. However, both said they drop the 2 lowest quizzes - so that will help. My concern with those classes comes in how many points those assignments are worth because they're not giving me a clue as to the gravity of those assignments and yet, I'm not able to "make them up" or turn them in early. The third professor I'm still waiting for a response from, but it's a lab class so I'm most worried about it. I don't know how lab classes operate and/or whether or not it being a lab class will cause more of a problem. I guess we'll see! If an opportunity presents itself and seems appropriate I might mention what you said, but at this point I don't think I'm going to go there with them. But- THANK YOU so much for being willing and offering that. You're super awesome! :3dglasses

Jessica - just keep plugging along with positive thoughts and it will fall into place. You 2 have put a lot of time & energy to make our cruise the best and I can't imagine you 2 not being there. It will work out.
I hope everyone is avoiding the bug going around. We are plugging right along but I know it is kicking our butts! I'm keeping up but just not posting much. Actually hoping that we can get down to DLR for the Holidays. If anyone is planning on being at the parks we are looking at Dec 10-12 and doing whatever possible to get Candy Canes Saturday! :cloud9:
Later,
Sue

Jessica,

If they drop two quizzes, you should be fine. Most professors evenly weight quizzes, so you won't end up missing any in the end. And given that it's the second week of class, I can't imagine you'll have any type of exam or other assignment of significance. Also, follow-up with them the week that the class starts. Remind them that you sent the email, are committed to succeeding, etc. Often times, professors come across as hard and inflexible until you're actually in their class. Also keep in mind that you're allowed to miss a certain number of days of class--usually one week, so you're not violating any policies and should not be penalized too harshly for it.

Labs might be a different story, but lets hope you have an understandable professor. You could also ask him/her if Oceaneer's Lab will work in a pinch. Maybe making Flubber will serve as a substitute. :)

:rotfl2: LOL :rotfl2:
That's too funny, I needed that! The lab class I've chosen (and it's a good thing it's the one I wanted to take because it's the only subject/course that works in my schedule), but it's Astronomy! I could argue that being at sea I can see more stars and constellations than they can on campus! What do you think?!? :confused3

Where better to apply astronomy than watching the star from the Wonder? I have a star tracking program on my phone; we can have a lab one night on deck after the Pirate Party. Problem solved :)

Sue, thanks! That's my plan; hopefully it will work!
Ryan and I would LOVE to meet you at Disneyland in December. Just let us know and we'll be there! (Not the weekend before Christmas though).

Astronomy?? Well I have nothing to add I think I got a C in that class but then again I never went.

Ashley ended up only having to take one on line class during the cruise. Here second class of the semester starts after we get back. I am hoping there is WiFi on the plane so she can knock some of it out while we fly out on Saturday.
