Hello Everyone, this is my first trip report. This was me and my wife's 14th Disney Cruise. Our 3rd without the kids (they're both in college). Our last cruise was the Panama Canal cruise last December (LA to Miami). The first part of my report is to let people know what to expect if they fly in to IAH, and what to look for if they are taking Disney transportation. I bought the Disney transportation before they increased the price, so for me and my wife, the total was $120 for both of us. Not bad for a 1 hour and 15 minute trip each way.
Day 1 - ARRIVING AT GEORGE BUSH AIRPORT AND DISNEY TRANSPORTATION:
We flew in to IAH (George Bush) a day early, and stayed at the Comfort Suites on Sam Houston Parkway. This particular Comfort Suites offered free transportation to and from the airport, and they offered free transportation to anywhere within a 5 mile radius, which came in really handy the night before our cruise, because they took us to Wal-Mart to do some last minute shopping. Anyway, last Saturday morning, we took the hotel shuttle back to the airport, and arrived around 9am at Terminal A. I was told to arrive around 10 to 10:30am, but I got there earlier, because I wanted to see if we could get to the port earlier. We took our luggage inside, and immediately found the Disney representatives. A couple of the ladies were walking around the baggage claim area (which is located on the lower level). Notice that their table is located at the WEST hallway.
vdfg28.jpg

After we checked in at the desk, we were given a card with a number, and the lady told us to take a seat in front of the Carnival check-in desk, and she would let us know when the bus arrived. As we sat there, we noticed the first "Disney Difference". The 2 guys at the Carnival desk looked like they were bored, and ready to take a nap, while the ladies at the Disney table were smiling, and talking with each other, and the guests. Also look at the next picture, and notice how cool the Disney area looks, and how bland the Carnival area looks. (a picture is worth a thousand words!)

After sitting there for about 10 or 15 minutes, we were told we could take our baggage outside, and it would be loaded in a separate truck. The Disney representative told us that we could take it with us on the bus, or we could load it in the vehicle shown below. So we just took our baggage outside, and gave it to a guy, and he loaded it in the back of this truck.

We went back inside and sat down, and probably about 10 or 15 minutes went by, and we were told to go outside, because the bus was there. We walked up to the bus, and I gave the guy our card (I think it had #13 or #15 on it). The same guy made a brief speech ("you will be taken to the port at Galveston......"), and we were off to the port. To bad they don't have the cool Disney Cruise Line buses in Houston, like they do at Port Canaveral.

As a side note, while we waited at the airport, I spoke with a Disney rep, who told me that our cruise had about half the number of guests (that were taking Disney transportation from the airport), than the previous cruise. Once we boarded the bus, we watched a Disney Cruise video regarding what we were to expect on our cruise. After that video, we watched a Funniest Home videos, that was broadcasted on the Disney Dream. When that video ended, nothing else was shown. The trip lasted about 1 hour and 15 minutes. (something like that?) Something funny that our driver said (or at least me and my wife thought it was funny), once we got to Galveston, our driver announced that we would be "confronted" by Disney employees when we got to the port. "Confronted".....that sounds like it might get physical! Well, it's been a long day flying from Texas back to North Carolina. Time to get a good nights rest before church tomorrow. I'll post the rest of my "first day".......tomorrow. I have a lot of pictures (my Parrot Cay lunch plate, an empty Quiet Cove pool area, and so on).

I was on the cruise previous to yours (you got on the day I got off). Our waiter told us your cruise had about half the number of guests our cruise did.

Yay, another Galveston trip report. :goodvibes Following along and looking forward to hearing all about your cruise.

The picture below is the inside of the Galveston terminal. If you look in the top, middle of the picture. (there's a blue sign on the wall) This is the back corner where the security check is. On the right is where most people will check-in. If you are a Platinum Castaway Club member, then you will go to the left side of this picture. The guy with his back to you in this picture, is a Disney employee waiting to greet Concierge guests, and Platinum Castaway Club members.

I went to the supervisors desk and asked if there was any verandah rooms left, but she said there were none. After that, the guy in the picture above, let me and my wife sit in the area with the Concierge guests and Platinum Castaway Club members. At about 11:45 they announced the family of the day, and then they let us go on the ship. We skipped the picture before you board the ship, and we were about 3 families behind the family of the day. So when we boarded the ship, it was pretty much empty. Having your family name announced when you board the ship, and the cast members clapping, is another example of the "Disney Difference".

Went to Guest Services, and they told me the Castaway Club Party was the next day at 11:30am, so I went to Wavebands and changed my Palo reservation to 10am. The 27th was our wedding anniversary, so we wanted to have brunch at Palo on that day. The Palo manager moved the reservation, with no problem. After I left Wavebands, we went to lunch at Parrot Cay. (Pork Schnitzel, grilled chicken, corn dog bites, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes) Port Schnitzel was my favorite.

After lunch, we went to the adult pool (Quiet Cove). We had stored our swimsuits in our carry-on bag. As you can see from the picture, no one was there. We had it to ourselves for the first 45 minutes.

After about an hour, I had to see what the specialty "pizza of the day" was at Pinnochio's. It was Portobello mushroom and Pancetta. Tasted pretty good!

Here's another shot of the deserted Quiet Cove pool area..

The Carnival Triumph was docked in front of our ship..

Here's a picture of the cruise terminal from the ship. Notice the gangway to the ship (top, right)

The cruise terminal at Galveston is very industrial looking. Definitely a "working" port. Very different from Port Canaveral.

Around 2:30, we went to our room, and our Castaway Club gifts were waiting on us (backpack, key chain and cheese crackers)

After the life boat drill, we went to the Adventures Away party on the top deck.

Everyone was having a great time...

Subbing in, loving your TR!

In your sailaway party pictures, what is that to the right of the stairs? Looks like a giant clamshell? (behind the gazebo where the DJ is). I have never noticed that before.

Thanks for a great start to your TR, I look forward to reading the rest!

Following....dreaming of the day all my boys are in college and DHubby and I can cruise anytime of year! Note: but I do not want to rush them growing up!:thumbsup2

On our first night, we went to Animators Palate.
jsk8yv.jpg

My wife got the Black Truffle Pasta (it was good)
2vbjwr5.jpg

I ordered the Butternut Squash Soup (I love it, wife doesn't like it)
2q84vbo.jpg

Wife ordered the Baked Potato Soup (it was good too)
s5agw7.jpg

Wife ordered the Lemon-Thyme Chicken (her favorite chicken dish on the cruise)
2dcan28.jpg

I ordered the Teriyaki Beef Tenderloin (very good and so tender)
21kmdlj.jpg

The Pennete Bolognese looked interesting, so I got a side order. It was okay, but not as good as the Beef Tenderloin.
28ur6rk.jpg

For dessert, my wife got the Cookies & Cream sundae (very good)
10wpgtc.jpg

I ordered the sweet temptations

The All Aboard show was good. Michael Harrison got a kid from the audience, and made him into a puppet. It was really funny. When we got back to our room, this was waiting on us. The box on the left was a gift that unfolds, and you can display pictures in it. There was also the navigator for the next day, an invitation to the DVC presentation the next day (chance to win $200 OBC), a booklet with Disney Cruise booking offers, and our towel animal.

Thanks for posting about the transportation from IAH. I know lots of people have asked about it on the "All Things Galveston" thread. :thumbsup2

Your dinner in AP looks yummy. I probably shouldn't read TRs with food pics when I'm starving hungry! :rotfl2:

Good start so far. :goodvibes

Great TR so far! I love all the pics! I'm going to subscribe so I don't miss anything. :)

Sunday morning, our character breakfast was scheduled for 8am. Of course, we didn't have any little kids with us, but we like to go to see the reaction of the little kids when they see the characters. It's a festive and fun atmosphere, and "Hey, you're on a Disney Cruise, have some fun!"
sgpxtc.jpg

After the Character breakfast, I strolled along the top decks, and took some pictures. The first was of the sitting area for adults just outside of the Cove Cafe. A great place to read a book or magazine.

Here's another picture of the same area.

Top deck was pretty empty.

Some people were watching the Jungle Book at the Goofy Pool.

The Mickey Pool and Slide had a few customers.

Day 2 - Palo Brunch
Our Palo Brunch was at 10am. On the previous day, I had rescheduled our brunch for 10am, so we could go to the Castaway Club Party at 11:30, but once we got to our room on our first day, that is when we found out that our character breakfast was the first sea day, at 8am. Oh well, not exactly like I would have planned it, but it all worked out. I think some people on the DISboards worry to much about the little things. (who's my server going to be, who's the Captain, who's the Cruise Director, should I change by dining rotation?) Don't sweat the little things. (ok, I'm stepping off my soap box!)

Fresh roses on our table at Palo
116izw1.jpg

Our first "hot" items we ordered were my pancakes. Pretty good, but had a strong molasses type syrup. They were okay, but I probably wouldn't order them again.
2hnq4au.jpg

The next item was the Eggs Benedict for my wife (ding ding...we have winner!) We love this dish. At the end of the meal, I ordered my own.
2aij414.jpg

I ordered the tomato soup, and it was delicious, and fresh tasting.
11sjbyx.jpg

And now..... the famous chicken parmesan (excellent)
23vzz90.jpg

I love the veal dish, with a light gravy and mushrooms. Very good.
bdrww1.jpg

We like dinner, but we LOVE brunch.

After we left Palo, we went to Studio Sea for the Castaway Club Party.
2z68m4j.jpg

I grabbed an Apple Juice Cocktail to sip on, while Captain Fabian spoke.
A video was shown, with the President of DCL welcoming us back for another cruise, and also giving us a preview of the reimagined Disney Magic.
209q7va.jpg

We were offered cookies, but I was just to full to eat any. Next up was our cruise director Natalie. As we exited the Castaway Club Party, Mickey shaped rice Krispy treats were handed out to everyone.
2zg7r09.jpg

After we left the Castaway Club Party, we went to the shopping presentation. Lauren was the shopping guide for our cruise.

On deck 4, they have these wooden benches.

Our dinner that night was the Golden Mickey's menu. My wife got the Broccoli and Blue Cheese soup. She said it was good, I thought it was just okay.
346rhqe.jpg

Next was her Romaine and Chicory leaves salad. (pretty good)
29ur7rp.jpg

I got the caramelized scallops, and they were okay. My wife got the cheese ravioli, and it was good. My wife ordered the turkey dinner, and she liked it.
3347tat.jpg

I ordered the shrimp and mushroom pasta, and I was a little disappointed with it. Wish the pasta had a little more sauce with it.
6zq1ir.jpg

I got a side order of the Potato Gnocchi. If it didn't have the pine nuts and pesto sauce, it would have been better.
l8gah.jpg

I ordered the Sweet Temptations for dessert.
addfnm.jpg

Wife got the Baked Apple and Blueberry dessert, and it was good.
aau4rc.jpg

We checked out the Golden Mickeys. We've always loved this show. It shouldn't be missed. Later on we checked out Michael Harrison's adult show, and it was also very funny, and entertaining. Key West day up next.

Fantastic pics! I'm gonna show my DH tonight, since this is the ship we will be sailing on. Can't wait to read more!! :)
