Disney Wonder Dry Dock Watch - 11/10 Wonder departs on first cruise out of Galveston

I may be wrong, and probalbly am, but there does seem to be a new structure aft port side on the upper most deck. This appears on the post from October 10. I wasn't sure at first, and I thought this might have just been in the background and part of the shipyard. If you go back to the duck tail photo from Sept 27 you again see this structure in the background by the white building on the pier. The structkure has 7 or 8 landings and appears to be about the same height as deck 6 or 7 on the ship. You can see this structure again in the most recnet post to the left (smaller in perspective). This structure could be part of some new offering on the ship (a slide or something else!) or maybe not.

I am not usually too interested in all of the assorted ship's cosmetic changes, but as a chronic sidewalk superintendent this caught my attention. I and an engineer as well as a former naval officer who went through a couple of ships overhauls. We will be on the Wonder this winter.

Is this the structure you are referring to?

If so, that appears to be a port building/structure of some kind.

Yes, but this is not what started my speculation! If one looks at the instagram link above, the structure appears to be on the top deck aft. When I first noticed this picture, I assumed that the structure was some shipyard artifact,
and that the tower was alongside the dry dock. But, after looking at the dimensions of the structure from the pictures reproduced above, it appears to me that the full height of the structure seems to be above the deck and the box like feature at the base of the structure seems to be at deck level. The structure in this picture is is only a little less than the stack height. At a bare minimum, the tower seems to have been move around. I am not sure of any of any of this but this is what I noticed, for what it is worth.

Another thought, if one were to put something of this size on the deck, then the reworking of the buffet cafe would have provided the opportunity to reinforce the deck structure for the additional weight.

The next question crossing mind, assuming tower was on the deck, was it still there later. This is a little hard to say, but in the picture in a few posts back the tower appears to the left of of the red flag. It is small, but this could well be due to the perspective. In passing, there is a black artifact forward of the red flag and behind the stack.

I am not sure what to make of all of this, but I thought that it was worth mentioning.

Are you talking about this picture:

If so, I think you are mistaking the loudspeakers that are below the flat for the tower. If you look at the blue flag on the right hand side of the picture you can see all the flags have this structure below them.

The black thing between the funnel and the red flag is just the "Funnel Vision" screen.

One of the biggest bummers for me in these photos is seeing they have indeed modified the secret deck on deck 7 :(

I might be alone in this, but in the pictures on the DCL Blog I think the ship looks really sleek and stylish right now before the yellow scrollwork gets painted back on. I know it's part of the DCL look but it would make the ship look classic but modern if it was kept like it is now!

Well the need to install the auxiliary generator on the after part of Deck 7 where the "Secret Verandah" was located is to give the ship the ability to provide power to many guest areas in the unlikely event of a ship wide power outage. I know a lot are belaboring the loss of the secret deck but I'm glad to see DCL is taking guest safety and comfort very seriously. Fortunately there is still an abundance of open deck space on the ship to see sights from.

Not to be rude, but I don't know why every time it's brought up people find it necessary to explain "why" it's going away. Yes, I know. Most other people know. It doesn't mean people can't be disappointed that it won't be accessible anymore.

I always love when people say "not to..." and then proceed to do exactly that thing. I knew the secret deck was going away, but that's the first I recall reading the explanation. So thank you, BartmanLA.

Sounds like DCL is finally sharing more. Today the Parks Blog has news about kids clubs. They are having more character interactions.

Curious as to where this information came from? Was it posted in this thread previously?

Thanks

Post 320 in this thread, and a few others in that vicinity discussed the addition of the generator and reasoning.

I was on the EBPC and had numerous "sundowner" conversations with one of the contractor company owners who was on the cruise as well. They are adding an Aux emergency generator on deck 7 (16 tons). In the event of complete power loss DCL wants to have backup to provide a cooking space (cabanas) and water for passengers. The Carnival episodes were a warning flag and DCL never wants to be in that position. In addition, they are they are changing out the entire fire suppression system in the engine room. Currently it is CO2 which limits the ability of the crew to be in the same space. The switch is to a high pressure mist system which allows crew to remain in engine room safely.
The ducktail is being added for fuel efficiency and as counterbalance for the new gen.

Oh! And I see that the title of the thread changed magically over night! I was just going to add the new Disney Parks Blog post to the title and the first page. Seems like the moderators took care of the title while I was away from the DIS for a day! :goodvibes

Thanks to those who are doing all the diligent sleuthing for photos. :goodvibes We are on the 11/10 sailing and looking forward to seeing all the changes (except the change to Outlook, not looking forward to that.) LOL
