Disney WONDER - Alaska: June 20-27, 2016

Hi, everyone! I'll start compiling a list and sending messages about fish extenders shortly. Thanks for your patience! I just bought plane tickets for the kids and me a couple of days ago, and I've reserved a hotel room for the night before departure in Vancouver. We are first-time Disney cruisers... Is there any real advantage to using Disney ground transportation either to or from the airport? Or do you think it's better to deal with it ourselves? Just wondering what y'all are planning to do, especially after leaving the cruise ship. Our flight out of Vancouver doesn't leave until 4:25, so we'll be in no rush to get to the airport right away.

We used Disney transporation our first go around. It was really easy, but expensive. We are going in 2 days early this time around, renting a car and exploring Vancouver on Saturday and driving to Whistler on Sunday. We are going to take taxi or Skytrain back to airport this time. After reading boards the taxis are unlimited and it cost about $40..
Also thanks for organizing the fish extender! Looking forward to our cruise!!

Thoughts....
  • you are smart to be in the city for a few days and then getting the car rental later.... there's a 17% tax if you rent in the first 24hours in the city.
  • what hotel are you at? checking the parking rates. Richmond hotels have lower or free parking!
  • consider doing the Whistler trip on Saturday instead of Sunday. If there is a rock slide or accident, it may delay your return and you miss your cruise ship.
  • It's about $35 for the taxi ($25 USD) for the carload.

We are renting a car the first day, but it was really inexpensive luckily! We are staying at a hotel in Richmond! We were at the Westin Bayshore, but switched because we have such a full agenda and would not enjoy it.
I had never even thought about a rock slide, does that happen often? If we get in at 11:00 do you think that is enough time to drive to Whistler and enjoy a day?
Where is a $35 taxi to? We are taking one from the cruise to the airport, and I know it is about $35.

Accident and rock slide closures are not as frequent since they upgraded and widened the highway years ago. However I still hear about the occasional closure. Having a second day is a good contingency.

Oh I thought you had a two full days in Vancouver. I would continue with your original plan with going on the second day. If you plan to go up the mountain.... it closes around 3:30pm.

I misread your original post.... It's $35 for a cab between the cruise terminal and the airport.

This is my boyfriend (28) and I's (28) second Disney cruise, first time to Alaska!
We are interested in the fish extender, but not really sure what it entails yet. So if anyone can tell us what it's about and all that jazz, it would really help our decision whether to participate or not.

@KarmaCat posted that they would handle the list. But hasn't been back here since Jan 14.

If anyone is doing multiple post-cruise days in Vancouver.... July 1st will have a fireworks show on the West side of the cruise terminal. They typically also light up the Olympic cauldron for photo's on that Friday too.

Hi! We are in Vancouver the 3 days prior to the cruise. Other than visiting family, I really want to do the Ziplining at Grouse Mountain.

Grouse is one of my fav places to visit when in Vancouver...

You might want to visit Friday when the crowds will be smaller than the weekends on your 3 day visit.

Our family is interested in the Fish Extenders, we have three girls (14,12, and 9) as well as my husband and I, we will be in Stateroom 8094.

Well guys, time is getting short and it looks like karmacat has gotten busy or had something else come up. I will be happy to try to get things organized and then I can turn it over to her when she is able to get back online. I'm not exactly sure what to do but I will start compiling a list from what people have listed so far and post it. Let me know any ideas or suggestions you all have. I'm so excited to participate in this part of our cruise. Please post that you want to join the fish extender group and I will add you to the private conversation. Then you won't have to put all that information on the public forum. :dog2:

Maybe this will help:
SETTING UP A FE GROUP
There really are no “rules” as to how a FE program runs. Basically someone will step up and say “I’ll maintain the list”. This means they maintain the list of those who wish to participate. The group can decide on what information is necessary to produce FE gifts. A basic list may only have DISname/room number/number of people in the room. A more involved list could be first & last names/ages/room number/ favorite character/ favorite color/allergies/whatever is deemed necessary to know in order to create the gifts. Also a decision can be made as to size of FE group. Some groups break out the list(s) at 10-15 rooms max, so that there are multiple lists (and some people will participate in more than one list). Other groups just make one big list (upwards of 20-30 rooms).

The easiest, most private way to handle the information necessary to prepare the list (many people prefer not to put sensitive information on a public forum), is to use the “Conversation” feature here. There needs to be at least two people to start a conversation. Only the starter of the conversation (usually the organizer) can add additional people into the conversation (as long as they do NOT select “Allow anyone in the conversation to invite others” at the bottom of the reply window). Then when new people express a desire to join, usually by just saying “we want to join the FE”, the organizer can add them by clicking on the “Invite more” button in the “Conversation Participants” window (lower right of conversation page). Only those people participating in the conversation can see what’s posted there, and respond there. I will also note, to participate in conversations, everyone needs to have at least 10 posts. For those who wish to use this option for private conversations that don’t have 10 posts yet, head over to the Test Board to post and up your post count. http://www.disboards.com/forums/test-board.88/

Up to 20 people can participate in any given conversation.

At some point the list will “close”. Typically this happens 30-45 days out from the cruise, so that everyone participating has time to organize/prepare their gifts. Shortly before this time (about 2-3 weeks prior) the organizer will post the list, either directly on the Cruise Meet thread, OR via private conversation, or, possibly, via e-mails. This is to confirm everyone on the list is still participating. It’s important to make a statement about “anyone not confirming by XX date will be dropped” at this time. A little harsh, yes, but often there are people who will post on the cruise meet thread as soon as they reserve the cruise and say “I want to participate”, and are never heard from again.

Once the list closes, the organizer will post the final list. Also, a decision must be made as to whether to allow late additions. Sometimes there is a “pixie dust” list. That is, basically, a latecomers list that gets posted about a week out from the cruise that others may or may not add to their “final” list. Be sure the “pixie dust” list participants realize they may or may not get gifts from others, but are expected to provide gifts for the other FE participants anyway.

The other “biggie” is no other social media sites are allowed to be linked or search directions posted as to how to find that other site here on DISboards. Please read this: http://www.disboards.com/threads/im...uise-meet-and-fish-extender-programs.3353477/

Awesome that is just the information I was looking for. I will try to start a conversation for everyone to sign up on. Thanks so much!

OK. I have my 10 test posts done. Let me know when you have yours done and I will add you to the conversation about fish extenders for our cruise. Looking forward to adding everyone who is interested. Thanks!

Relax. It takes the system a little time to recognize you've got 10 posts (about 30-60 minutes). Once it does the Conversation feature will be added to your account. You'll know you have it, if you click on someone's avatar and in the next window you see the "Start a conversation" link.

I'm ok. I was just getting the ball rolling. It's all good.

Hello all! My family will be going on their 2nd cruise and just figured out this whole "fish extender" business. Would love to get the whole family involved - got 3 kids, me, my husband and grandma. Let me know where and when the conversation will begin!
