Disney with a 3 week old?

One more thought from an attachment point of view. Attachment with adopted children is a HUGE consideration. The baby has just lost the voice that it has known for the 9 months that it was carried in utero. The baby needs to get to know you, your voice, your breathing. Disney is a stimulating experience for all and an over stimulating experience for some. If at all possible can you rebook your trip for even a few months out so that this precious new bundle of love can spend time getting to know their new family in a calm, nurturing environment?

Just my .02. Feel free to disregard if you wish as I know I'm off topic. I've done a lot of attachment research and have personal experience with my own adoption so wanted to share my thoughts and yes, concerns.

I have 4 kids. I'm a seasoned vet and the answer is a big NO! Just hang out with chicadee in the hotel room. Believe me you'll want to anyway and enjoy. If you want to you can split shifts and swap out with your husband! Little peanut needs to chill.

Wanted to add that they sell fans which attach to the strollers. I used that for my DD. You can also get a spray bottle with water. This is good for the older kids too, to help keep them cool.

Since you already spoke with your pedi I'm not sure why the other "medical professionals" are chiming in. Go, have a great time. If you feel you need a break, go back to the hotel. What a wonderful way to celebrate the adoption!

Lol, you have never heard of a medical professional giving poor advice? Anything that sounds this counterproductive for the most important person involved would be research just a wee bit more. Of course you may be willing to treat your doctors as infallible, but Try googling thalidomide.

You'd have to be bat crazy to expose an at risk infant just so you can go ride some stupid rides.

Wow...My medical professional also has 4 kids so she knows what it's like to be a parent too. Not sure what you mean by it being counterproductive. I'm not willing to treat my doctors as infallible. I do research many things. I have a pre med degree myself. Not sure why you are directing me to Thalidomide either??? :confused3 I can only assume is that it is one of many drugs that can be used to treat skin cancer? Aveeno now makes a baby sunscreen that the American Academy of Pediatrics says is safe for infants under 6 months.

I really think y'all should stop with the suggestions of what the OP should do. She didn't ask for that.
She obviously *has* to take a plane(germ central) to the Orlando area to pick up her newborn. She will *need* to stay in a hotel while she is there. Why not a Disney hotel?
You don't know her situation or her plans. Since they will be in Orlando and the family will be accompanying her, it's not the end of the world to let the kids go to the parks and swim.
Babies are born in Florida ALL the time, people. It's hot. That's Florida. People go out with 2 week old babies all the time.
I personally wait a month, but that's me and I have the choice of not flying across the country.
I don't expect that they can/will stay holed up in the room, regardless of where they stay while in Orlando.

Keep the baby sheltered from people, out of the sun, and spend lots of time in the room or sitting by the pool hanging out and getting to know each other. Avoid over-crowded indoor spaces and keep baby deep in a sling or wrap when indoors to keep people away.

I agree that a baby carrier is the way to go, but be careful about overheating. I also like the idea of a bassinet stroller, so it is more like a regular bed. You may need to spend a little more time in the room in the heat of the day if it is really hot. My son had crazy colic and it started around that age, so that is my fear for you. If this baby has colic, it may be a whole lot of hell for everyone- mine screamed up to 7 hours straight, not cried, but screamed like you were ripping his arms off. But, only 10% of babies have true colic, so you are probably fine!

I am sorry...I should have explained more...we really don't have a choice. We are adopting and we have to fly to pick him up...we already had the trip planned, paid for, etc., and my older children would be very disappointed. We had no idea that our adoption would happen to fall right before our trip...

I checked with my pediatrician and they said it was fine...just to keep him covered, etc.

I was just looking for some tips for traveling/Disney with a newborn.

Thank you!

Congratulations on your adoption!

Will you be through Interstate Compact at that point? I wouldn't count on it. If you aren't, unless the baby happens to be born/placed in Florida you won't be able to travel.

The bassinet stroller is a great idea. I wouldn't remotely entertain putting my 3 week newborn in a hotel pack 'n play.
The one we have folds flat and can be packed in a large suitcase or check at the gate in the stroller bag with the stroller. Then it just pops back up when you need it. :)

Thalidomide was widely prescribed in the 50's and 60's to combat morning sickness. It turned out to cause horrible birth defects. I believe the poster you are referring to meant it as an example of poor medical advice.

took dd at 3 eeks. no problems at all, easiest trip by far....(local travel though)

eta, and I had an emergency c and fine to alk around...(not your case though)

YEP!!! but according to the dis, it shouldn't happen. I can't tell you ho many arguements I've gotten into re heat and infants over the years.....

We traveled with our 5 week old in below freezing weather. We walked the 4 blocks to the bus station, took a bus to the airport and flew to Nashville. I know not anything compared to WDW, but still, we learned to adapt. She did great and was no bother. We toured a bunch, and I just wandered off to a quite bench when she was hungry. This isn't your first baby, and you know what you're doing.

Oh, by the way, CONGRATS! :yay:

Wear your baby is a quality wrap-(like a moby) and wash hands frequently. Are you going to be able to nurse? I don't know if you are still nursing any older children, but this will definitely cut down on the germ factor. Best Wishes- and congrats on your newest little one.

I took a 9 day old last year - we live close by so it wasn't a big deal- but he slept most of the time and just snuggled in the wrap.

Apologies if I seemed harsh before. I work with babies and responsibility just kicked in there. I wouldn't recomend a trip to a theme park, but having said that - what I would suggest if you go is:

A wrap sling.
Moby is easiest, but as someone mentioned before, Solarveil or a Gauze or Cotton wrap work brilliantly in hot weather but have more of a learning curve. I'd suggest you look for a thin wrap and then look up on youtube how to use it. As you have the advantage of not being pregnant right now, you can practise on a doll or teddy bear ;)

Having said that - my last son was born in the middle of a heatwave (as hot as the UK gets lol) and we managed with a Moby - I just sweated buckets.
The key with wrap slings is to dress light - both of you. Your body will work like an incubator, raising or lowering in temperature to suit the baby, but to make this happen you need as few layers between you as possible. So on a hot day I'd dress myself in a thin top and the baby in just a vest at most, or nappy/diaper and nothing else.

Feed the baby little and often for hydration - though with other children I'm sure you know this ;)

I'd also recomend a parasol. I've not been to Disney, but I've heard people use umbrellas in teh rain, so why not parasols in the sun? :) This means you can keep all unwrapped parts of skin covered without the need for suncream, which isn't advisable on new babies.
I got one on ebay, if you search for 'edwardian parasol' you'll come up with the one I have, works fab!

I am one of those crazy people that believe the more you are exposed to germs the more you build them up. Babies are born with immunity, I think some people forget that. They get immunity from their mother in utero. While I didn't have to worry about summer heat with a baby I did have to be concerned with frigid temperatures. I did not stay in my home for 1 month before going out. Where did this 1 month thing come from? For the most part, Disney is in the open air.

OP - congratulations on your new addition. Some people have offered some great tips. Have a great trip.

what air line are you going with b/c I was sure that you would not be able to fly with a baby until 6 weeks old....I can not say what to do b/c I would never go out with my baby until 8 weeks old and I live in CA in May with my 1st DD and in NYC with my 2nd DD and now I live in Miami FL and have many friends that have had babies and dont' go out and about all day at a park or the beach. Maybe a hour or two but not all day.

Southwest allos infants over 14 days old. Not sure of the others.

You can see people say 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks to take babies out. Bottom line. That is their opinion. There is no medical reasons that I am aware of for why a healthy (non immuno suppressed) infant should not be taken out. As always, it is best to have people wash their hands before holding an infant. Again, babies are born with their mother's immunity.
