I posted this on the CB, but thought I'd post it here too.

Disney Visa Users...CHECK YOUR ACCOUNT!!!
You never think it will happen to you but it can...Identity Theft. I just received a phone call from Chase reguarding my account. It seems on July 20, someone called them to change the address on the account. Then later that day proceeded to make a $500+ purchase on the internet. The address change along with the large internet purchase was enough to flag the Fraud Dept. to check into our account. Chase immediately put our account on HOLD until we could verify the charges for the entire month. Luckily that was the only charge that was made by the theif. I don't even want to think about what damage they could have done at the mall! Chase doesn't know exactly how our number was lifted but we just received our new cards with the Chase logo 2 weeks ago. It is possible that someone got ahold of our courtsey checks since we never received them.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE check your accounts! Log onto your account at cardmemberservices.com and make sure you are being chagred for purchases YOU made! If you find any errors CALL CHASE IMMEDIATELY!

I actually check my credit card several times a month. not so much for theft, but to make sure my quicken agrees with my CC. However, a side impact is that I would quickly notice strange charges.

Carol- My DH checks our acct online about every other day, he just so happens to be out of town this weekend, or I'm sure he would have caught it today. I thank GOD that the theif used our account on a LARGE purchase and right after changing the address. I know alot of people just wait for their statement to arrive to check it. I just wanted remind everyone that this does happen! You hear about it everyday and you never think it will happen to you. Unfortunately it can.

If you haven't already done this- you can set up email alerts to notify you whenever a purchase over $X is made with your card. I have mine set for $150.00.

I am a bit anal about this and check my accounts every day online. Probably way more than is actually necessary for most people, but I got into the habit and now do it as part of my morning routine (along with checking these boards, of course!)

DH just got off the phone with Chase. It seems that the address was changed online. Chase told DH that somehow the hacker had our acct# and ran a program to search the last 4 of his SS# and once the program found a match they were in and able to make the address change to our acct. Chase also told him that we were not the only ones to get hit, "many" people had they're accts changed by this hacker. She said that it was a CHASE only problem and that our other acct's should not be affected by it as they did not have his entire SS#. We WILL be ordering credit reports though just to be sure!

just went to check online and I can not log in ~ they are performing maintenence! Now I'm all paranoid about this....hope I can get on tomorrow and check things out. Thanks for the heads up!!

I had to close my Disney Visa account in April due to unauthorized charges. I check my charges every day online and noticed right away that something was wrong. I think it will continue to be a problem for anyone with credit cards. There are so many ways for people to steal your information.

I was part of that 40 million numbers lost on my regular visa check card. I never saw any fraudulent charges, but the bank did send me a new card with a new pin number.

And like Shelby, my room-mate's parents had thier mail stolen, so they had access to everything. Discover noticed the charges, and they were able to catch who did it because they decided to transfer funds into an account. (really brilliant, don't ya think?). In any case, they've changed thier mailbox to a lock and key.

OMG! I had no idea you could run a search and get part of someone's SS#!!!!!!! :confused3 That's pretty scary since these numbers are often used as a means of ID. Where will all this identity theft end????????? Nothing is confidential anymore! Going to try to check my accounts right now!

I've gotten into the habit of checking my two main credit cards every day. I also check my bank account and my mom's. I figure if I have time to hang out here every day, while I'm on the computer I may as well keep tabs on our finances.
