Hello everyone. I plan to book a cruise as soon as the late 2019 itinerary is released. Can you think of any advantages or disadvantages to using our Disney rewards money we have accrued through our Chase Disney Visa for our down payment? It sounds like a lot of people use it on the ship, but I haven't read much as far as using it to pay for the cruise.

Thank you,

Scott

Does it get rung like a Disney gift card? If so then yes, you can use it.

Hi Scott-

You can use your Disney Rewards redemption card for anything related to Disney. As Beth mentioned, it gets used just like a Disney gift card. I've used mine to pay for hotel rooms and merchandise. I would definitely use it to help offset the cost of the cruise. I can't really think of any disadvantages. You've got points/Disney dollars so might as well use 'em!

We have done this... and we have cancelled. No issues at all. Goes right back on the redemption card. Years ago, the cards had expiration dates, but not any more.

Thank you all. I was just making sure I wasn't missing a flaw to my logic. Have a great day!!!

You get 0% interest for 6 months on the deposit (and the balance of the cruise price) if you pay it with the Visa itself, plus additional rewards points. You don't get the financing for excursions or purchases on your onboard account once you're onboard. That can make a difference for some families.

There's no advantages or disadvantages. It's basically a gift card. You can either apply it before your cruise by calling DCL's Amenities line, or use it onboard. And certainly, you can use it for a down payment as well. If you don't have enough on the card for the down payment, you can supplement with another form of payment.

Since the reward card no longer have an expiration date, it would be wise to keep it safe, and protect it like you would cash, because if you lose it, anyone can use it. Just in case you're not familiar with it, make sure you order the card plenty ahead of your cruise. I would allocate around 2 months, just to err on the side of caution. You can always transfer your rewards to the card at any time. Transferring the rewards, once you have the card, is instant. Of course, don't get rid of it when you're done as any refunds would go back onto the rewards card, and it's reloadable.

Keep in mind that the rewards card is totally separate from the Visa card itself. The Visa card is what earns you the benefits. The rewards card is pretty much just a gift card, but reloadable, and reusable, so protect it and keep it safe.

You CAN get the financing on your onboard charges if, a week or 2 before you cruise you call the cruise line and use your Disney Visa to add onboard credit to your account. I have done this for all of our 14 DCL cruises, always putting a couple thousand $s on the account. I get the 6 months no interest financing, and anything I don't spend is refunded to the card. Because we cruise often, we don't usually have to big of a refund, as we are familiar with what we spend. Reward dollars are a great way to save more $ too! Have fun!
