My son just had some credit fraud problems......although not compromising a current card. Someone actually had compromised his personal info....SS# and had a fraudulent drivers license with my son's name and address, but, a different operator number on the license. Fortunately, it was discovered quickly by a very astute customer service rep at Neimann Marcus as the person was trying to open an account there using the fraudulent info. However, he had already opened several other accounts in the few days previous and there was already close to $10,000 charged on several other accounts. Neimann Marcus fraud dept. called my son and advised him to contact the credit bureaus to put a fraud flag on his credit info. Fortunately, the very next day the person tried to open another account in a different store and was arrested with my son's fraudulent ID on him. I just can't imagine what would have happened if the Neimann Marcus rep had just denied opening the account there, but, didn't follow through by verifying with my son that it was NOT him trying to open an account. He probably wouldn't have known for several weeks and it could have been an even bigger headache than it currently is for him. Fortunately, since the person was arrested and the fraudulent ID was confiscated it's just a matter of completing paperwork...but still a lot of work.
