Disney Visa Card/Booking question

I'm looking to book a vacation but we don't want to go until end of November 2018. We want to cancel our Disney Visa Credit Card but I have about $500 in rewards. If I ask for a reward card to be sent and then cancel the card will I still be able to use the rewards?
Can I use the rewards to book a hotel room?
I was told I can book a hotel in advance by calling but not a package. Does anyone know if they will take reservations this early in advance?

request a Rewards Card for the full amount of the rewards you have. When you get the card go to Disney Store.com and purchase a gift card using the rewards. I think the cards are in $25 increments so you might need to add some $$.

I did this when I got an offer of a $200 GC if I signed up for the Premiere Visa; kept it for a year and then cancelled once I had the gift card in hand.

if you have rewards on a rewards card when you cancel the credit card you will lose the rewards.

I believe you must have an "active" credit card account or the rewards are automatically canceled. I assume when you cancel the credit card account it would cancel any/all redemption cards associated with it.

Yes, you can use Rewards to book a hotel room. You can book a room-only reservation 499 days in advance by phone; next year's packages are expected to be available online probably within a month. But if you book a room-only and later wish to switch to a package, the room-only must be canceled and it could be a hassle to get the refund properly if your Redemption card has been canceled.

Could you just switch to using a different credit card for a while until you get your plans settled?

Good to know about the rewards getting deleted once I cancel my card.
I can easily keep my cc until I book.
So if 2018 packages are out in a month or so, I can book in November a package? I'll just wait then. I'm sure it will be changed 100 times like I normaly do and once promotions come out as it gets closer. I will just use my rewards money as money down and then it's used. They couldn't take that away once I put it towards the vacation and then cancelled the card, right?

It would be best to do as a prior poster suggested and go and buy Disney gift cards at the Disney store, than use those to book your room.

If you were to cancel the reservation or have a need to change it, you would be safer since you intend to cancel the credit card.

Refunds usually go back to the method used to book the room. With the rewards card once the credit card account is closed, you have no where to be refunded.
