Is there any reason I shouldn't donate all of our old Disney clamshell VHS tapes? We don't have most of them on DVD, but we rarely watch dvd's and never watch vhs. I have them boxed up and ready to go, but thought I would ask first.

I just love those big white boxes!! Just what I wanted to see as a kid on birthdays and Christmas. DS4 has some of my old movies, and I bought several for him on VHS. We have lots of doubles, but I'm slowly getting rid of some of the VHSs. I feel like I should keep them, but I think that's just nostalgia. Not very helpful, but thought I'd share anyway. ;)

I'd check online for the going rates first. Some of them are quite valuable if in good condition. I still have the huge ltd edition "storybook" collection for several movies, which included lithographs etc.

You can sell them as lots on Ebay, sometimes that will work for a little profit. I have several of those Big ltd boxes too, but I don't think they are worth much. Frankly, I'm keeping most of mine. We had these tapes for my kids and now my grandkids love them. I work part time in an entertainment store and I tell you, I don't have a real high opinion of DVDs..they seem to have issues much more than VHS tapes..yes, they can be resurfaced, and yes, tapes can get twisted or eaten, but overall I still love VHS tapes. I buy spare VHS players when I find them cheap (at thrift stores, garage sales) and stash them as back ups.

I guess I should add that they would be donated to a good cause........ a Band Boosters Yard Sale that is raising money to send the marching band to WDW next spring! :wizard:

If you already "double-dipped" and have certain movies on DVD/Blu-ray, I would say it's time to get rid of the VHS tapes of the same movie.

However, there are a few Disney titles, out there which are yet to be released on DVD/Blu-ray (I would hang onto those VHS tapes, for now).

I would hold on to ones that have not been released on Blu-Ray, or at least write down the UPC numbers. Disney generally gives a $10 off coupon for "upgrading" to the Blu-Ray/DVD pack if you own the VHS tape. Even if you don't want the Blu-Ray, you maybe able to buy it and sell it on EBay or Amazon at a profit.

For example, when the Toy Story Blu-Ray came out, Toys R Us were selling both for $16.99. After the coupons they were $6.99 a piece and came with 2 free movie tickets for Toy Story 3.

We've kept all of ours and will probably keep them for the grandkids (if we have them) someday. I can't bring myself to buy a DVD or BluRay of something I already own.

While this seems charitable, I never see VHS tapes being sold for more than 50cents, especially at these type of sales. Usually, at large functions like this with items being donated, they do not individually price things based on worth, but rather there is a price for a type of item. For example, all VHS (regardless of title or condition) is 50 cents.

For this reason, if you want to keep them for any reason, I would just donate $10 (20 VHS tapes) to the booster and keep the tapes.

Though, I have appreciated those that donate as I don't mind VHS since we have a player, and I've been able to build a collection of Disney movies for my little one very cheaply! Some of these large garage sale fundraisers even offer "fill a bag". I got 10 movies for $3 once!

I would think a charity would be a good idea, your choice.. I have no ideas, I would say though go through them (and do a little homework) as far as value, if you own an original Lady & The Tramp for example no way would that leave my hands :) in fact it would be put in a safe & left to family in a will

I love when people donate them - that way I can buy them.

I'm so much happier with VHS than DVDs. It seems like the DVDs scratch easily but our VHS seem to last forever. Plus, we are on a very strict budget and I can afford to purchase a used VHS but we can't afford to buy DVDs very often.

BTW, I've never found a Disney VHS less than $2, including at Goodwill or garage sales. Many times they are priced $2.50 - $5.

I buy them all the time at the Goodwill for .25. I've gotten Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo, Pocahontas, as well as many more. We love our VHS tapes!

Why Lady and the Tramp?

If there is childrens hospital in your area; call them and see if they would like to have them. I used to work on a peds floor and we were always having some ask about movies, dvds, etc to watch. Or even if there is a womens shelter they may want them too.

I have dozens of them too,as well as dvd and blu-ray.I'd never get rid of them;some are very valueable ,going for hundreds of dollars in some cases.

While I certainly understand what you mean, "someday" could be next year, or 10 years from now.

That said, I wouldn't hang onto the VHS tapes (as over time, the magnetic video tape degrades, which results to poor picture/sound quality -- plus, if you go to any of the big stores, there are no more "standalone" VHS players to be found) -- instead, go for DVD (of which players can be had on the cheap), or, better yet, go Blu-ray, which will "future-proof" your movie collection.

I donated all of my VHS tapes to Give Kids the World in Florida. The details of how to donate are on their website.

I had a few VHS tapes out in my rummage sale but no one buys them around here. I stacked them over by the "free" boxes and finally a lady asked about them. She ran a daycare and used VHS. I told her she could have them and she was thrilled. Not Disney tapes-they were Elmo- but I am just glad someone can use them. :goodvibes

Why would you keep lady and the tramp? They sell for $1-6 on ebay????
