Ok...my father went in for a check-up on Monday and was diagnosed with conjestive heart failure. We are, of course, hoping and praying that he will have many good years left.
However, this was a reality check for me and I got to thinking about the terrible possibility that something could happen during our vacation. I remembered a brochure that we got about insurance being available on our trip, but I could not find it. I called Disney and told them that I would like to purchase the insurance simply so if something happened while I was there and I had to come home, we would not be losing everything that we have saved so many years for.
The CM told me that the insurance is no longer available to us because we have paid for our trip in full. Evidently, you can no longer purchase it if you have made a payment on (or paid for) your trip.
We are still 40 + days away and would get the full refund if we cancelled, so there would be no reason to think we are trying to pull a scam.
Any idea why this is...or what will happen if we do have a tragedy?

One consideration in purchasing trip insurance is pre-existing conditions. Since your FIL has already been diagnosed, it may be excluded if you buy now. Usually pre-existing conditions are only waived if you purchase the insurance with the initial deposit or within 5 or 10 days after.

If you bought a package, I believe the cancellation fee is $200 for less than 6 days before, $100 for 6 to 45 days before. So you wouldn't lose it all. If you are flying, you would also have to look at the airlines cancellation rules. Most will allow you to reschedule for a change fee.

Hope everything works out.

There may be other third-party insurance carriers that can give you coverage, but the pre-existing condition clauses are usually pretty restrictive and may not cover you fully. I would imagine that as the vacation approaches, the price of coverage increases.

Others may say its not necessary, but in almost every instance I now invest the extra $100 on the insurance for every vacation. Its a small price to pay to know our vacation investment is covered.
