I searched but didn't see a thread on it...

I've just seen the FB commercial for it & visited the website.

I'm waiting for a catch - seems awfully nice to be able to save this way for FREE...am I missing something?

I'm not much help, but saw the same video from Facebook and was interested in looking further into it!

It is a nice option. I have 2 accounts going right now. Free I guess is in the eye of the beholder.........there isn't an interest paid on the account. The only real financial gain only occurs after $1000 is saved. A few months back they had an IT breakdown which put many off...........I believe that's behind them now :)

As a way to specifically save for Disney........its nice. Using this vehicle, I'll have all the money for 2 AP's taken care of for our Nov 2016 trip to AKV by Sept of next year saving $75/month, in preparation for the YEAR OF DISNEY 2017! 8-)
I like it pixiedust:

I use it and have been using it since January. I am horrible at saving money, so this has been great for me as a way of 'Don't have it in my savings so I can't spend it' yet I can watch the money saved go up gradually which is a great feeling. At the rate I am going, I will have my goal amount saved by January of next year, and still have at least another year to save, so I can be looking at a great trip OR I can have money left over for a second trip. For every $1,000 you spend, you will get a $20 gift card from Disney. Not much but it can go a long ways too, depending on how much you spend.

We just signed up for our DVA to help fund an upcoming Adventure By Disney trip. We are going to be buying Target Disney gift cards at a 5%+ discounted rate. Rather than keeping track of stacks of gift cards we are going to add that to our DVA so it is all consolidated. Check this DIS Board thread for details on steps for saving a chunk of money.

This is the thread mentioned. From what I remember, apparently they had a software bug and Disney was taking too much money out of people's accounts. So they shut it down and it took Disney several weeks to get it working. In the meantime, accounts were frozen, people couldn't get their money out, and Disney CMs were not forthcoming on what the problem was.

Big problems with it in the spring! The website was down for several days. People were auto-debited for funds that they didn't authorize and still others who entered gift cards that were not credited to their accounts but still zero'd out. One poster on the Budget Board is still missing $50 from that fiasco and has had to fight to get another $100 that went missing. Very poor communication from Disney. That thread is on the first page of the Budget Board as of this morning if you would like to check it out.

I had an account in order to be able to combine all of my Disney gift cards in one place. I emptied out my DVA and will not add more money to it. Disney now has a website where you can manage your gift cards and combine the balances of your cards onto a single card (maxing out at $1K on each card). The extra $20 for every $1K spent on qualifying purchases is not worth the aggravation, IMO.

You can go to https://disneygiftcard.com/Manage/MyCards and combine your GCs, rather than use the DVA. You would still end up with a stack of GCs, but it will be much small and you will have a record of them in one place should you lose/misplace any of them.

Everyone makes mistakes, I think the vast majority of people had no real lasting effect from the software glitch. I have an account, and yes, they took double, and then the next day it was put back. I had an extra email explaining it to me, and that was that. I don't consider 1 issue to be a deal breaker for me. Now, if it happens again, or even again, that would be another issue.

For me the account works out great. I set it up to take a fairly small amount of money, with the idea that even in the worst of times, I would manage to have half of my November 2017 trip covered. It would increase my chances of being certain to be able to afford the trip. Maybe if things were good financially, we could use that extra savings for a treat, maybe fly instead of drive from Ohio, or upgrade to a better hotel than moderate, or cactch an xmas party... things we don't consider doing because of the expense.

However, a few weeks ago, I was stumped on what to do for our 20th wedding anniversary (9/9) and when my wife mentioned that she missed Disney, I dis a quick check on the site to see what prices were like, and discovered to my surprise that I had almost 75% of the money we needed to do a Adults only trip in Feb already saved in our Disney Savings Account. Whoop! So that is what we are doing for our anniversary, going to Disney for 5 days in Feb. Had I nit been saving the money, I would never have been able to pull of a spontaneous trip like that.

Wow, this is interesting. Usually anytime somebody creates a thread asking ANYTHING about DVA, certain people quickly begin posting all off-topic with unsolicited financial planning advice, telling the OP that the DVA is worthless, and to just use a savings account so you'll yield dividends and get more cashback than you do with the DVA gift cards, blah blah blah. Or telling the person 839,247,982 other reasons and ways to save for Disney... Instead of offering any answers to the OPs questions, or any advice at all about the DVA program itself. I'm shocked, relieved, and happy to see that hasn't happened here (yet!) :thumbsup2

So anyhow! The fact is that some people are great little savers, and some just aren't. I'm in the second category. I have been using my DVA for over a year, and I love it. I'm the kind of person who if the money is in any of my bank accounts, it's like cash, and I'll justify things to spend it on even when I KNOW that I need it for my next vacation. Or I'll tell myself, "Oh, I'll just borrow the money from my Disney savings, and replace it later..." And then later never happens. :sad2:

I don't do DVA for the gift cards (though it's a nice little bonus). I do it because it helps me to control my spending, and keep my impulsive little hands off of money that is earmarked for an upcoming Disney trip. And it's been awesome! :goodvibes

I also had a similar experience to a previous poster... My DVA was an invaluable resource for me back in April, when a last-minute opportunity came up for me to do a quick 3-night trip at the end of that month. The ONLY reason I was able to make that trip happen was because I'd been stashing money away into my DVA for 6 months at that point, and had more than enough to cover the costs.

And for the record, I weathered the storm of the glitch earlier this year. Thankfully, I wasn't one of the people who had additional money taken, as I've never set it up for automatic withdrawals. I only put money into mine using the One-Time Payment feature. The biggest problem I had during that mess was that the day availability and bookings opened up for 2016, that's when the DVA website was down to fix said glitch, so I couldn't login to get my account number to pay my deposit with. (Lesson learned... I now have the account number stored on my computer and in my phone, so I always have offline access to it.) So in the meanwhile, I put the booking for my October 2016 trip on hold, and then a day or two later when the website came back up, I called in and paid my deposit using my DVA, and all was well. :cutie:

Give it a try, OP. If you find it's not to your liking, just request a refund of the money you paid into it. No harm, no foul. ::yes::

I opened my DVA the middle of last year but haven't put much in since. The reason being that at least 3 times that I've went in to put in a one time deposit I have been unable to access the account. So now I'm a bit hesitant about even adding any more. I'm now leaning towards gift cards instead. The only issue would be though is how many gift cards can you use when making a payment on a trip?

So I just opened an account with DVA. It seems awesome right now. Usually we go to Disney and pay for the trip by using the money my hubby gets from his annual bonus as work. Thats in February though that he gets his bonus and we usually go to Disney in March or April. Anyways when its time to book the trip in the summer I hate having to wait for a certain paycheck or something to be able to book the trip, lol. So I decided to open the DVA account bc I also belong to swagbucks so every time I reach $25 on swagbucks I get a $25 Visa gift card and just deposit it into my DVA account so I won't have to worry about booking my trip in the summer. Anyways then I learned that when you book a trip through DVA you get a $20 gift card for every $1000 you spend on it. So my hubby says when its time to pay for the trip in full in February we will just deposit the trip money into the DVA and then pay with that for our trip so we get some extra cash for souvenir money. Anyways seems like a good plan to me, LoL...also gives me a way to save up my swagbuck giftcards!

Once you use the account for a vacation, can you use the same account again and get the bonus again or do you need to open another account?

I believe, and I could be wrong, that you can use the same account, and just set up another trip. You just select "Start Another Goal" and be able to set up the goal trip you are going to save for. After I am done with my trip for 2017, I will start saving for 2021 for the 50th Anniversary of Disney World.
