Moana 2 and Mufasa are worse than any movie on this list (except maybe Wish - that movie sucks.)

Seriously. For the money Moana 2 took in, I couldn't even finish it. Moana 1 is in my Disney top 10.

I think the problem has nothing to do with Male/Female leads or the strength of the characters. The problem is that all of the original animated films since 2020 have just been bad movies. Some of them really bad.

The stories are terrible, it isn't the characters, it is the stories themselves.

While "Bad" is subjective, I don't think I'd say that at all. Per Rotten Tomatoes:

Ron's Gone Wrong - 82% / 94% (not technically Disney)
Encanto - 92% / 93%

Now, personally, I don't put a lot of stock in RT scores anyway, but they can serve to illustrate a point that the "good" or "bad" quality of a movie is very subjective. Look at a few of those where the critics hammered it, but the audience liked it? At least one is the other way around for...reasons. Most of them though have very strong ratings on both, so I don't think you can call that slate in any way bad overall.

I don't get why people hate Wish so much. I thought it was pretty good - very classic Disney, which is what a lot of people were clamoring for (return of a true villain). Now, it's not necessarily my favorite of all time, but it's solid and the animation is stunningly gorgeous! That 48% is pretty harsh from the critic. Save that for Lightyear!

That's not really a critique, but okay.

Even if Wish is "bad" and it's critic score is warranted, most of the rest of the movies on that list have pretty strong scores. Many of them bombed at the box office too (if they even got a chance to). So, are they "bad" because they failed? Did they fail because they are "bad"? Fact is, one has very little to do with the other. Good movies fail all the time and bad movies are successful. I still say that the slate is pretty decent from a creative standpoint, and many of them are quite popular and well regarded.

I don't really put much into critic scores either, but they can be illustrative of the overall sentiment toward a movie. I mean, I can call a movie "bad" in the sense that I don't like it, but if it has 98% positive reviews, then I am in the minority on that and my personal dislike for it is probably not tanking the company's credibility.

Mario just had the obvious benefit of being a self contained IP movie while with Wish a bunch of Disney IP nostalgia got jumbled in to an attempted original story

Wish is definitely "by the numbers" but considering how many people really want that, I am surprised how harsh people are on it. Like, SMB, it was still pretty decent. At least Wish had a uniwue and beautiful anaimation style though, which does elevate it a tad in my book.

Yeah the Mario movie is a 6/10 at best. I am starting to see people turn on it though. Only took a few years.

But forgettable doesn't mean bad. Again, at lease Wish looked good - SMB is rather generic (I mean nice animation, but nothing special). It is amazing that as big of a Nintendo fan that I am, I haven't much cared to revisit SMB (though I did rewatch it on an overseas flight).

Fair enough, but still. It was trying to harken back to those older style Disney films that don't really have a lot of substance. Yet a lot of people here like them, which is why I'm surprised that people are so harsh toward it. It's generally fine and inoffensive, and there are at least some things to like about it.

But again, "good" and "bad" have very little to do with box office. Many bad movies do well and many good ones struggle - though, again, those labels are subjective. Would you say that every movie that makes a ton of money is "good" in your eyes. Do you only like what is popular? That is the argument you are making. Then again, you list Elemental as "really bad" though it did have legs at the box office and is considered pretty successful. People don't always "pay-up" for good movies and sometimes they do pay for bad ones too.

What really makes a movie successful at the box office is a combination of marketing and timing. For most movies, the timing part would have needed to be "before 2020" to have really made any significant money.

Also to note, Onward box office was cut short by Covid lock downs (it was in fact the last movie I saw in a theater before the world changed). Soul , Luca, and Turning Red went straight to Disney+, so they're not really mesaurable by box-office take.

Regardless of how you sum it up, the last decade of movies Disney has put out have not been that good. I believe they were targeting the wrong market segments, and even then, for the market segments they were targeting, the stories still stank.
