Disney travel competitions

yes, another grumble about the WDW things that are offered to people in other parts of the world and not to Australians. I get the Disney email updates aimed at US citizens and enjoys some of the movie information. I just wish that we had some of the opportunities that they get to enter competitions etc. the competitions are always only eligible to US residents. Also people from Canada and the UK seem to get extra travel special offers that we are not eligible for despite being outside the U.S.

OK rant over. Back to dreaming of another trip and trying to decide which Disney one I would want to do first (WDW or Disneyland - having been to both before).

The reason behind contests/competitions only being open to us citizens...is due to the fact if you win you must pay taxes on the prize you won. This is also why the total value of the prize is always given in the terms and conditions.
As the amount of taxes you have to pay depends on the overall value of the prize on offer.

Without going into a huge story
My sister won a trip to disney world many years ago. However, they ended up having to forfeit the prize...as the taxes they had to pay for "winning" the contest were steep. In fact, they worked out it would have been cheaper for them to pay for the trip on their own...than what they have to pay for "winning" the comp.

Though if they paid out of pocket they would not do or utilise all the things that came with their prize. Stay at cheaper resort and somethings that came with the roiled they simply would not use.

Also too I have to want to recall one of the components to the tax bills was the prize included $5 or $10,000 spending money to use whilst on their trip. Which in the USA money won as a prize is still viewed as "income" and must be reported to irs. Winnings from contest are taxed at a higher "contest" rate. Blah blah

It's all really complex
But most of the time it's really not "worth it" to win these sorts of contests

Hmm, yes taxes would be annoying but I was thinking more that there could be a bigger Disney presence in Australia to offer these competitions to us. And all the special offers too of course. I would like the type of WDW tickets offered to UK residents, not the long Disneyland ones offered to Australians on occasion. I like Disneyland but not for 10 days.

Would be nice if there were more (any) specials for Aussies. We travel such a long way and it costs so much money.
