How was uber overall? We are back and forth on uber vs car rental. We will be there 3 days at the end of the month post cruise.
If you'll only be in the OSJ/condado area don't rent a car. Driving is insane. If you're going way out (we wanted to go to Arecibo Observatory for instance) then rent but joy for the close in stuff.
The app is constantly being updated with where drivers can actually pick up. It was changing day to day as to where they could drop off, or different drivers were more or less brave.
Two days in a row we were picked up "at" Caribe Hilton and dropped off at the Plaza Colon area. First day the guy got us around the corner from the hotel, out of sight of the entrance. He dropped us off up the street towards the San cristobal Fort. Next day the driver picked us up just outside of the Caribe entrance and dropped us right in the plaza area.
Going back, we got the same driver as that morning somehow. We were on the street where the day stop ships come in, and we had to walk and walk to get to a spot where he could get us.
Apparently there has been some serious negativity and maybe even violence against uber from cab drivers, so they are cautious.
Both cab and uber were good and professional. Cabs were on the high side* IMO but then the only other place I take cabs is vancouver bc where I find it to be immensely reasonable. So I'm not the one to speak to cab rates.
Expect that you will have a phone call from the driver to tell you exactly where to go. Do ask questions; they seem to think tourists know more about the area than a tourist should. DH is allergic to asking questions, so when the driver was talking about the street but the hubby was thinking he meant the shopping plaza, we got to walk all the way around the shopping area just next to the Hilton only to find ourselves in front of the Hilton.
*but I never felt taken advantage of. It's a flat rate in some places (airport to Caribe was and so was Caribe to panamerican pier) and metered in others and you can research to find out which will be which.
Getting out of OSJ can be awful. I suggested we go down to the day cruise port street one day because it goes both ways, but DH kept us on the one way (not the way out) street at Colon to get uber. Since it's uber there wa no meter but if it had been metered it would have been icky. We had to go on that one way street (Calle San Francisco?) where side windows nearly brush parked cars on one side and pedestrians on the other almost the whole way back (we had just walked all that to get closer to where we were going for pickup!) until finally there were streets that could be turned down. Then we ended up on the waterfront road to go the opposite direction. Whew. So try to help everyone out by looking at a map and knowing where you're going g (if only DH read the Dis lol). If only to save on time and frustration! Leaving OSJ on a non cruiseship day at 5 isn't pretty!
