Disney to Serve Healthier Food at Parks

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Walt Disney Co. will begin serving more nutritionally balanced meals at its domestic theme parks and will sign movie and other endorsement deals only with restaurants that limit fat and sugar in menu items, the company said Monday.

Trans fats will be eliminated from meals at domestic parks by the end of next year, and will not be included in licensed and promotional products by 2008, Disney said.

Disney CEO Robert Iger said the move came in response to comments from parents about the eating habits of their children.

The company was "well aware of the huge responsibility we have, given our reach and our ability to impact people's behavior and opinions," Iger told The Associated Press from Singapore, where he was on business.

Given the increased attention to healthier eating, "it was the right thing to do," he said.

Disney said it would implement the new guidelines over the next several years as current contracts expire.

Iger said the company also sees a business opportunity in promoting and licensing healthier products, ranging from breakfast cereals to the children's meals it serves at its 11 worldwide theme parks.

The entertainment giant currently licenses characters to Indianapolis-based produce distributor Imagination Farms LLC to provide fruits and vegetables for the Disney Garden brand.

Other large consumer products companies also are pushing healthier eating.

McDonald's Corp. has been adding more salads and fruit to its menus, while Wendy's International Inc. recently said it would switch to cooking french fries and breaded chicken items with non-hydrogenated oil.

Last month, the Federal Communications Commission announced plans to study links between the ads that appear on kids TV shows and the rise of childhood obesity.

A number of entertainment companies have come under fire for maintaining marketing deals with fast food chains and junk food makers.

Last year, Disney and McDonald's ended an exclusive 10-year deal to promote animated films using Happy Meals. The move coincided with a growing national interest in healthier eating for kids — although both companies said the decision had more to do with a desire to work with other promotional partners.

Disney said it worked with physicians to develop the new food guidelines that:

— Place a cap on total calories, which will result in smaller portion for children.

— Limit fat to a maximum of 30 percent of calories for entrees and side dishes, and 35 percent for snacks.

— Cap saturated fat at 10 percent of calories for main dishes, side dishes and snacks.

— Limit sugar to 10 percent of calories for main dishes and side dishes, and 25 percent of calories for snacks.

The company will keep licensing sweets for special occasions, such as birthday cakes and holiday candies, but will limit the number of "indulgence" items in its total food portfolio to 15 percent by 2010.

Starting this month, kid's meals at Disney's domestic parks are being served with low-fat milk, 100 percent fruit juice, or water, along with side dishes such as apple sauce or carrots in place of french fries and soft drinks.

Parents can still request soda or fries at no additional cost.

I can't believe it has come to this. Really--I can't.

Also--I wonder what qualifies as an "indulgence" item?

Ridiculous! :sad2:

I'm still having a hard time dealing with BAKED chicken McNuggets and now this???

I actually like the idea, but it's purely selfish on my part. I found that when ordering counter service, the choices are limited. Most foods come with fries, I don't want to eat fries. Instead of fries, how about a side salad? A baked potato? :confused3

That's great...but don't eliminate the fries...or take them off the menu so that you have to ASK if you can have some fries. I would like my vacation fries. I guess I don't care if they take them off the kids' menus so it would be up to the parents to ask.

I'm not sure, but the article seems like it is referring to children's meals. The only thing it says that seems to be targeted toward adults is the elimination of transfat (which is pretty much a non-issue). I think we've already heard stuff about changes in childrens' meals on the disboard ... how did the rest of you read this?

That's how I'm reading it too but I'm not real thrilled on it.

On the other hand I have a daughter who keeps complaining that the food keeps changing because "we are fat" and I have to constantly battle the message of *it's ANOTHER thing changing because "we are all fat" *

I'm sure they will keep their Mickey bars & rice krispie treats. I think those are pretty big money makers and they aren't going to be getting rid of them anytime soon (although nothing surprises me).

It won't really affect me anyway because according to Disney 2 of my 3 kids will be adults next time we go anyway.

Oh. Whew. OK. I took it that in 10 years, everyone (young and old) would be dealing with less "indulgence" items.

I am ON vacation! I want to indulge :teeth:

i think it's a pretty good idea. when you're "go go go!" while on your vacation, fatty foods only make you feel more sluggish.

i wouldn't mind eating healthier while on vacation as well!

Nuh-uh. Nope. When I'm on vacation, I don't wanna be healthy.

*pouts*

But that is the thing...some people don't like to "go, go, go" while on vacation. I am an adult--If I eat fatty foods on vacation and I am sluggish--It is my choice.

As long as I can still get the treats for all of us, I don't care what else they offer. After all we're on vacation!

Exactly! What ever happened to person choice and personal responsibility? The government and corporations should not have to force these things among people. It is a really sad time when they feel that is the only way to change the way people will act.

It is getting out of hand that people refuse to take personal responsibility over their choices, keeping an eye on their children, what they eat, or what they watch. I have eaten fast food... I knew it wasn't good for me when I did it... but I will not go back to the resturant and BLAME them for my weight gain! Nope, I made the choice to eat there with knowledge of how bad it was (and any adult that says otherwise... I mean come on, I don't think a Big Mac and super sized fry is on ANY diet plan!). So it is my fault and only my fault!

i'm sorry i didn't mean to offend you. i'm sure there will still be a lot of the same things they have now to eat. i mean, they can't very well do away with the turkey legs!

I think there needs to be more creativity in all choices. "Healthy" shouldn't always be trans-fat free chicken nuggets with carrots and plain applesauce. How about more creative, healthy, tasty choices? (And not everything has to be healthy - it's good to be moderate in food, and I do eat some junk!)

I mentioned elsewhere that I'd love to see an Earl of Sandwich in each park. They have healthy choices, some not-so healthy ones, very fresh food. I can get a baked potato and tomato soup for $2.50 plus tax, and that is something that many kids can eat too (without being dumbed-down on chicken nuggets all the time). There is a place for chicken nuggets - but it isn't necessarily at every meal.

I'm sorry but vacation means fun food and being bad on the diet

No! No! You did NOT offend me! It is Disney that offends me. Why are they making choices for me?
