Disney Store Refund Policy is upsetting to me.

One way to get tagged is to have a tag sale :)

So here's the story.....

I bought 2 shirts for $6 each and paid cash. Brought them home and they weren't right for me. Too tight and too long so a bigger size would just be longer and look ridiculous. I decide to return them.

I have the cash receipt and all tags are attached. I am immediately asked for my license. Huh? For a cash sale?? I object and the girl says, "Those are the rules." She wrote down all of my personal info including my license number. This really bothered me. All of this for a lousy $12 cash return.

I'm not going any further with this such as complaining, etc. I guess I just wanted to give others the heads up on their unconventional policies.

Sadly, this is what many retailers have been forced to do. There are enough customers that are 'serial returners' that literally buy things, return, buy more, return, etc etc etc. I used to work for an AV retailer, and we had 2 clients that I am aware of that we had to 'fire' because they literally returned over $20k worth of equipment.

I know it seems like a ridiculous fuss for a $12 return, but they are just trying to control their inventory, and their shrink.

Just like the PP said, because there are a few bad apples, retailers now have to have stricter return policies. The employees (or CMs in the case) don't like it anymore than you do, however the rules have been made by someone way above them. This information is gathered regardless if you have a $.23 cash return or a $1000 cash return - it's only fair that way.

I was always told this information was gather in case there was ever an audit - whether or not that is true, that is what I heard.

I can tell you one reason they do it.. to make sure people are actually making the returns. I worked retail and my assistant mgr starting to just scan stuff off the shelf and "return" it for cash. She did this for a few weeks before we caught on.

ETA this was not a disney store i worked at.

I work retail and my employer now has a system that monitors all returns. We actually scan the license into the system and there is no way for us to access the customers personal information. If the customer does too many returns with no receipt it will not permit the return. If the customer is getting too close (with or without receipts) it will give a warning. Any receipt that the system prints out has a toll free number for the customer to call. Do I agree? Yes and no, but please don't get upset with the store employee, they are following procedure. On a daily basis we have had merchandise thrown at us, we are cussed at, yelled at and all frustrations are taken out on us. So, on a regular basis, we encourage the upset customer to contact the corporate office with any and all complaints, you may want to try that.

I had the exact thing happen to me at A.C. Moore a couple of months ago. Cash transaction, small amount, I had the receipt and they wanted my DL. I protested, saying they didn't require my DL when I purchased, and that they had no business asking me when I had my receipt and was returning within the 30 day period. She insisted, and there was a line so I gave in. I immediately called their corporate HQ and complained, because I know what the DL is for. It is to keep track of people who return things without receipts. They keep track and start to decline any returns they want. Plus it's NOTB. The CSR on the phone basically told me that the store was NOT following policy and she would call the manager. The manager called me later and basically told me that he would bring it up at a meeting, but I am not sure that his policy will change. I will not go back to any store which treats me like I am doing something wrong, which is exactly what they are doing when they ask for ID., and I told them as much.

Walmart tried to pull this on me once when I was returning a defective DVD player-with a receipt. I refused the DL and the manager came along and OK'd it without. They do NOT need your DL if your return follows the rules of receipt and time frame.

MY DD 15 went to Ann Loft and bought me 2 shirts for my Bday. She continued shopping in the mall and found something else she wanted so she went back to Ann Loft and returned the shirt maybe an 1/2 hr went by she said. The sale lady asked her for a drivers licenses. What, my DD said, I am 15 and don't drive, I just bought the shirts. She was like that is our policy, my DD fought her and would not leave until they gave her, her money back. I said good for her, but the stores are getting out of hand. In our mall you can't even by a gift card without a Drivers Licenses. I refuse to buy them.

With all of the id thefts going on I would not be comfortable with giving them my id if I was returning the items following the printed store policy.

A few years ago there was a lady on the Dr. Phil show that was a serial returner. If I recall, she would even go as far as using a vacuum for 4 or 5 months and return it for a better one. Things were so extreme where she had even been placed on list shared by different retail merchants where they would not allow her to return items.

First off, I too disagree with this policy. It has happened to me at Children's place and it really irritates me. If I have the clothes w/ tags attached and a receipt, why do they need my license.

I used to work at Disney and w/ a receipt all we needed was a signature. If the guest didnt comply, we would write refused on the receipt.

I know they are using the license to track returns. But IMO this should only be w/out a receipt.

I know quite a few people who don't drive. Would they be allowed to return things?

One thing I refuse to do is give out my phone #. I've had businesses actually sell my phone #, so now I just say it's unlisted.

Hmm, I made a return to the disney store a few weeks back. I had bought something at the outlet in Myrtle Beach and returned to a Disney Store back in PA. No problems whatsoever. I didn't use my DL...maybe since i paid with a credit card?

I used to work in retail and we had this policy as well. It was to make sure that actual customers were making the returns and not an emplyee conjuring up fake returns and pocketing the cash.

However, as a manager, if a customer objected, I always instructed the cashier to process the return without the DL.

The same thing happened to me at Children's Place. When I questioned it, she said "we really don't need it" and proceeded to refund the money to my credit card. I can understand totally if you don't have a receipt but I agree it is ridiculous when you have a receipt especially with a cash transcation.

I just wanted to respond to a few comments. First of all, in no way did I get nasty or rude with the cashier. I just questioned why they would need my DL with a cash receipt. The manager was standing right there and said nothing. I was the only other person in the store so I know she heard me.

I could see if I didn't have the receipt or there was something fishy about my return. I can also understand businesses protecting themselves from fraud these days but my return was clearly not fraud. I felt very uncomfortable giving out my personal info for the purposes of tracking. They had no business even asking for my DL in this case.

I wonder if this is the same woman who always bought clothes where I used to work! My store had a very "the customer is always right" return policy, and this woman worked it to her advantage. She was ridiculous, we all hated waiting on her. Eventually the store started to get a bit tougher on returns and made it policy that you had to have a receipt to return at a register; if you didn't have a recepit you had to go downstairs to customer service (this was a big department store). Oh how we all loved being able to tell this woman she had to go to customer service to return all of the stuff she pulled out of her closet that was obviously YEARS old!

The only store I've been asked for ID on a return when I had a receipt is Barnes & Noble. They do it to track how often you return, since a lot of people buy books, read them, and then return them. Not that I've ever done that or anything.

I have been a Disney Store CM for almost 16 years and this has always been the policy. Just recently, the last year, we no longer require and ID with a CC return. We also do not copy the DL # down. I jst put MA LIC. We don't take unlisted phone numbers either. If the guest refuses to give info, has happened to me, I get the manager and they do the return.

Don't get upset with the CMs. They are doing their job and unfortunatly it sometimes is upsetting to them as well as the guest.

I just wanted to repeat that I did not upset the CM in any way. I did not ask for a manager but as I said she was standing right there.

I am upset at my personal info being taken and being told that it is policy. My DL number was definitely recorded on the return. It is tracking any way you look at it and shouldn't be forced for a small cash transaction that included all tags attached and receipt.

I would not have a problem with any of this if my return was without a receipt. That is when tracking is necessary.

I so disagree, you have every right if you have a receipt to return an item because it is not what you wanted, does not fit or just plain changed your mind!

It does not matter if you return 1 item a year or 1 item a day, it is your right...it is not the right of any store to demand you show proof of your identity to return an item that was paid for with cash.

Most states have laws that cover this. In Tennessee you have 3 days for major purchases and I believe it is up to the Store for minor purchases most give 30 days.

Are you sure about this? I thought it was up to the discression of the store if they chose to accept returns or not. That's why each store has their own policies.
