I do not know on which location I should put this question but decided to start here. My mother is a Disney stock holder and got in the mail yesterday from Disney that a box with personal stock holders information (name, date of birth and social security) has been lost. My mom's info is one of the one's lost. Disney is providing to pay for two years to pay to one of those websites that check your credit history, etc just in case of identity thief. Has anyone here got the same letter from Disney?

Thank you for any replies.

Sorry this happened to your mother. This seems to happen from time to time with different companies. Hopefully, it was just "misplaced" and not actually stolen.

Yeah, we got the letter yesterday. However, this is not the first time this has happened to us with different companies though. It's good to always watch your credit report but tell her not to worry about it too much.

DH got one yesterday, but I thought it was just a general warning, I didn't think it specifically said his information was stolen. But it was a long letter...I didn't read the whole thing. He already has fraud alerts on everything, so we aren't particularly worried. It's happened to me before with insurance, and there is little you can do except be watchful of what's going on with your credit.

This is a best fit on teh Disney Rumors and News Board and that's where I'll be moving this one over to.

I got the letter also. I wonder if it's a hoax? I didn't try going online to sign up for the credit reports.

Thank you for all the applies. We were wondering if there was anyone else out there that got this letter. Its good to know we are in good company. I too was wondering if this was a hoax. Wish it was. Sorry about placing it here but I could not determine where to put the message in.

Thanks again.

I got a letter, but it wasn't from Disney. From Mellon something or other. I was going to google to see if it's a hoax or not.

I'd like to know when these huge data companies are going to be held accountable for this nonsense...this is the third or fourth incident we "might have been affected" by.

I called the Walt Disney Company Shareholder Services and there was an automated message saying if you were calling about the BNY Mellon letter that it is not a hoax and they suggested calling the phone number in the letter. Here is the Disney number I called 818-553-7200.

Has anyone called the number on the letter?

The letter from BNY Mellon is nothing more than a deceptive sales tactic designed to get you to enroll in a credit monitoring service provided by ConsumerInfo.com.

They were busted back in 2005 by the FTC for using deceptive sales practices. If you sign up, you’ll regret it!

I got the letter too and did some googling that got me to this thread.

I also learned that ConsumerInfo.com , the company they are using for the free 24 month credit monitoring coverage, is another name for FreeCreditReport.com. I personally had a bad experience with them about 5 years ago. Before you sign up for this coverage, please do your own research on this company.

Indeed, Experian uses a bunch of different names to peddle their credit "services". Here are a few of the names they use:

CIC Credit Monitor SVC; Consumer Info; Consumer Information; creditmatters.com; freecreditreport.com; homeradar.com; I Place; I Play Innings; QSpace.com

Got a letter yesterday....such is the way of the world it seems. I did find it interesting that in a company that can clearly figure out how to use computers to make a car tire look real, they can't figure out how to put our info in a secure server instead of a box to lug around :confused3

It was a box of storage tapes (backup data tapes) that were lost by BNY Mellon's archive services vendor.

This is not a hoax letter (my real job is in the same industry) and if you received the letter, your information was on one of the backup tapes in that box.

I have not called the number for the consumer alert stuff....

It is also not only for Disney Shareholders.....other BNY Mellon customer's data was included as well, so this is a BROAD range of people it affected.

You’re absolutely correct, this is not a hoax. It is a well crafted marketing ploy designed to get you to sign up for Experian’s Triple Alert credit monitoring service. And if you sign up for the service then you are also signing up for offers by all of Experian’s “marketing partners”.

Do you want to receive countless pre-approved credit cards, advertising circulars, free trial CD’s and all manner of other unsolicited junk delivered to your mailbox? Do you want telemarketers calling you? Do you want lots of SPAM in your email? Then just sign up for the free credit monitoring and you’ll get all this and more!

The letter from BNY Mellon is nothing more than a marketing solicitation. Experian’s Triple Alert credit monitoring is virtually worthless and will do nothing to prevent or detect identity theft.

That BROAD range of people amounts to 4.5 million! :rotfl2:

Is wondering if there is any recourse to Mellon's BS scare tactic. I would think this could be considered a "terrorist" type of scare tactic.

I signed up for the service. It basically just creates an account from which you can get and store your credit reports THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR. Needless to say, I am not going to pay for any, so at best - I just wasted my time.

At worse, I'll get a bunch of spam. I did not have to give a credit card #, so I won't get charged anything.

There is no way I would sign up for it again - it's pointless.

Don't be too sure that you won't be charged. Experian already has all your credit card numbers and they have a litany of documented consumer complaints concerning unauthorized credit card charges.
