Disney steps up efforts to bring 'Avengers' to parks

I'm not sure brand confusion would be a problem in Disney's eyes. DTD has Lego and it's not too far away from Legoland. I do think the issue would be money. Would it perform well enough to justify it's creation? Other than movies (John Carter), Disney is pretty good at marketing and creating demand for it's goods. Perhaps a dedicated section of Once Upon A Toy to sort of test the idea to see if it warrants it's own store front. If it makes the $$$, I believed they'd at least consider it.

But you also need to remember that the DTD Lego store has been there for Years, while Legoland just opened within the past year, and is far enough away and still not really known as well as by the General Public.

Disney already gets questions all the time about the Disney Transportation bus they need to take to get to Harry Potter or the Universal park. They also get confused a lot by why they can't use their MYW ticket to see Harry Potter. It's just like with all the hype about CarsLand you know they are starting to ask CM's in Florida how to get to it. Sometimes it's VERY easy for those of us on the DIS to forget that there are a lot of visitors to WDW who just don't realize that Universal and Disney are not the same or affiliated in any way, and don't really do much research into what exactly they are getting themselves into.

As such, there is a very real possibility that if they increased the Marvel presence within the WDW compound with a branded retail shop at DTD, You will start to increase the confusion on why they don't have a ride, or a chance to get a photo with Spiderman or Captain America.... or with the Universal billboards which have Spiderman on them, people asking which park has the Spiderman ride. It'll also likely just increase the misinformation out there from CM's and Bus Drivers on the details of he Universal Contract and when it's expiring so Disney can build it's ride. (Especially when they complete or officially announce the Avengers attractions in California and other worldwide parks which were mentioned in the article that started this thread)

Valid concerns, all. I was just thinking that because Disney is selling Marvel merchandise in the parks and DTD anyway, why not centralize it in one unique (unique is good, right?) shop? DTD gets something different and Disney operated and the Marvel-Disney connection gets the exposure it probably needs. No meet and greets, nothing over the top, just a store that specializes in Marvel merch. Movies, comics, posters, clothing, toys, things like that. And to separate it from all the things you can find at any Walmart, perhaps create things that are limited and unique to the Disney location. Look, I'm a comic geek and a Disney geek. They don't have a natural synergy, but if Disney is willing to spend that kind of $$$ on something, promote it as theirs. Just my opinion.

Just returned from a trip to WDW and did not find Marvel merchandise anywhere on property. This looks like a change from my previous visit a couple of years ago where it was all over Future World, Tomorrowland, and DTD.

personally if there were due to put a shop(comic book in IMHO) in DTD,one of the small boths next to the AMC theatre would be ideal.Marvel is film/comic book based in the end

That is a change. I remember seeing it in EPCOT two summers back. Mostly toys and t-shirts. Wonder what brought about this change? With the success of the Avengers, you'd think that Disney would be trying to capitalize on this.

I worked as a Concierge CM , a job where you spend most of your time giving directions and explaining transportation, and not a single person ever asked what Disney transportation they should take to Harry Potter. You are way off with that

To be honest there is no need for WDW to put in Marvel merchandise - only because it would be the same stuff you can buy in the Disney Stores or at the comic book store in the mall or at Wal-mart or Target or Toys R Us. I LOVE Marvel Comics way too much but it doesn't need to be in the parks.

I too love Marvel, and I think putting in a unique, one of a kind shop would be a great way to expose people to a product line that they might never would before. And as I stated earlier, create truly unique items available only there, creating a destination for Marvel/Comics fans.

On a different note, I wonder how long it'll be before Disney announces a Marvel themed resort? Prob not in WDW, but somewhere...

I have been IN LINE behind a family, at AKL, who asked the front desk just that: Which bus to go to Harry Potter world.

So he's not wrong.

How often it happens, I don't know. But I can at least tell you it has happened. I'd be shocked to find out I witnessed the one and only time it's ever happened on Disney property.

A couple other things to keep in mind.... When did you work Concierge? Harry Potter has only been open about 2 years now, and for the first part of that first summer it was open i would be willing to say that it was primarily Harry Potter Fans which really drove it's increased attendance, which are people who most likely would make a point to know where they were going. I'd be willing to say it woudn't have been until at least a month or 2 after it's opening that you would start seeing more clueless general public types who had seen commercials for it on TV but didn't know enough about Disney or Universal to know better start filtering into the parks.

I'd also question which resort you worked at (obviously, some onsite resorts are probably going to have less clueless types than others).... and if the clueless types would even be the ones who would even know to talk to the concierge to ask transportation questions, or if they'd be more likely to inquire at park bus stops, ask bus drivers, or other general CM's they'd see around the property.

I don't doubt that you may never have heard that question, But we all know that Disney is a huge place with many different types of guests. I highly doubt everyone who's worked there has heard all of the popular "stupid guest questions" we've all heard about being asked on a regular basis.

Are you speaking for yourself or every concierge on property?

I worked at Y&B as late as last year. I'm sure its asked from time to time, and i apologize if i came across as if i was speaking for others, but my contention never was that it never happened, just that it wasn't some widespread problem like the poster insinuated.

Are you speaking for yourself or every concierge on property?

I would never assume to speak for others, but thankfully the level of communication between concierge cast members not only at each resort, but between resorts is very high. Also, with WDW's deployment program, it is easy for each cast member to recognize and become acquainted with the various challenges that each resort presents through personal experience or through visiting cast members. I will say this, for the most part, every concierge on property is at least aware of the most frequently asked questions, common problems, and the solutions to all of them, and as far as i know, and my fellow cast members were concerned, it never came up even in discussion.

I don't know if this has already been discussed. There was a rumor (or speculation) last month at Theme Park Insider that the new secret attraction being built by Universal is the Transformers. They believe that the reason it is being rushed is because Universal and Disney have come to some sort of an agreement (contract buyout), and that U. wants a Spider-Man type ride up before they begin to change the Marvel Island. Some say the new attraction is a Haunted House. Screamscape today, supported the rumor of the Transformers. I guess we'll see what happens.:)

There's a big thread on this over on the Universal forum.

Most of the current rumors are surrounding the demolition of Building/Soundstage 44 which has been vacant for years and is located between the Monsters Cafe and the Lagoon.

General consensus in the thread over there.... it's not Transformers for several very key reasons.

1. The site is pretty small, which limits the space available for the show building and queue.

2. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever for Universal to build Transformers in Florida. The Ride is virtually identical to Spiderman with just a new overlay, so why would you build 2 of the same ride? (That would be like Having both DAK's Dinosaur and DL's Indy ride located at WDW. It wouldn't be long before having 2 of the same ride with different overlays ended up negatively impacting both attractions)

3. Why would Universal just spend massive amounts of month to upgrade the projection system and create a new digital film for Spidey if they were just going to shut it down? Even if you say it's because Disney offered a crapton of money to Universal [which has it's own facts making it unlikely], Any such discussions would obviously take quite awhile because of all the issues involved, which would've in turn impacted Universal's decisions on either making the upgrades, or at least promoting them as much as they have.

Beyond that, There are also some other questions about the Building 44 work which make a strong case against something like Transformers going in that spot. Specifically.... the Permit and Demolition happened INCREDIBLY quick with very little warning. There are even reports that just prior to the building demo starting, they were ripping out a lot of work done to prepare for a HHN house in the existing building done under some HHN permits placed about a month or so prior.

While at this point anything regarding that site and the demolition decision are purely fan-based speculation, There have been rumors for a few years that the existing structure received some damage during some hurricanes that blew thru central Florida several years ago. The building has also been vacant for YEARS. As such, it's probable that while beginning work on the HHN house they may have discovered an issue with the structure than prompted the last minute rushed demolition. maybe it was unsafe? Maybe because of the building's age (over 22years) and time vacant (13years) a mold, electrical, or retrofitting issue arose? Maybe it would've just been too time consuming or expensive to bring the building back up to modern codes to get a valid occupation permit?

Either way... Whatever is happening at that site, there is absolutely no debate that the decision to do it and the work to get it done is happening EXTREMELY quick. Besides Demolition work happening during the day, during the crowded/busy peak season (both are highly unusual for a park to do, especially in such a central location surrounded by public areas), There have also been reports that they have blocked off park walkways at times during the day to allow trucks access to the site while the park is open in order to remove debris.

I thought it was the Haunted House too, and it probably is. I'm just not as sure now. Screamscape has been saying that all the rumors they've heard recently have been for The Transformers. Theme Park Insider (is his name Robert Niles?) had the theory about a deal struck with Disney, it's only a theory. He's also said that he's heard that the D.C. Comics rights are available and that Universal could get an exclusive for Florida if Marvel leaves. The other day he said that he would like to see what they can do with Gotham Island, the Batman themed island that was suppose to go there before the Marvel contract. I don't know if that was a hint, or just more speculation.:)

Wow, this is interesting. I haven't heard of the DC stuff or that the "rights" were going to be available. That makes for some interesting conjecture. Would love to see something happen on that front. Nice to see Disney able to utilize the Marvel properties on the east coast, and to see what Universal would do with the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel. True or not, it's fun to imagine.

Not sure I could see them doing anything with DC. DC has been affiliated for so long with Six Flags that I honestly have a hard time seeing anything outside of cheap skin on some coasters.

I'm also not sure if DC would have a deep enough portfolio to really attract Universal's interest. They've got some characters with history, but outside of Batman (and a bit of Superman), I can't think of anyone with the current pop culture standing which could build something to draw the general public.

To be Perfectly honest, If Universal ever does decide to release the Marvel license, I don't really see them retheming Marvel island to a DC Island. Besides the lack of a real strong draw, I could see someone in creative seeing it as too easy a way out by going from one comic family to another. I'd more likely see them potentially going in a different direction if just to avoid the potential accusations of "taking the easy way out".
