Disney Skyliner (Gondola Transportation System) Read Post 1 Now Open!

I just saw a pic in the "New Security" thread. The portion above the new Contemporary walkway security checkpoint says "15'-4" Clearance." But like the post above me points out, it can vary - just like we imagine the gondola height will vary.

Well sure. I just meant that there was no need for it to be 100 feet in the air.

If they would place something as they had talked about on the podcast (suspended monorail) that would be much better. Just have no desire to be swinging up in the air and no A/C? Hope they have airline bags.
Guessing you;ve never been on a gondola before. I have never been on one that I noticed the swinging, like you do with a chairlift. I think their mass keeps them more centered. Also I still think they will have to A/C these, I know people are saying they won't, but they would get way too hot without it.

I don't feel a lot of sway on gondolas, but you get some front to back sway when leaving the boarding zones usually and crossing the towers they have some bumps and jolts. For someone who doesn't like heights, like me, that can be disconcerting. There are going to be people who don't want to ride these, regardless of whether they are 20 feet up or 100 feet up. It will be interesting if Disney takes the approach with the monorail resorts or runs buses all day. I can't see them not running supplemental buses at opening and closing, but I go back and forth on whether they will run them all day. I'm guessing they will from Pop and AoA, maybe not from CBR. Just as a function of resort size (3600 or so at the two values vs 2200 at CBR) and target audience.

I have been on a number of trams, or what is being called gondola, ski lifts, or aerial lifts. Been to blizzard beach many times, Lol. I live in Pittsburgh, ever been on an incline? Now that is crazy (Johnston PA has one that you can put a car on). Just does mean I want to ride one at Disney. I will wait and see the height and build before making a decision to ride or not. If it sways in the wind I'm out.

Is there any reason to think this is not a possibility for what they are building?

My only guess would be the placement of the support towers are to far apart to support something larger as discussed on the podcast. But then again right now this is all speculation as the permits filed do not have the details to clearly outline what the proposed transportation would be. Placement of supports and cable systems have from what I know are not be clearly outlined. All that has been filed is for some additional structures within the resorts that are slated for construction. Given what is known this seems to be the best educated guess. Disney has not come out and said anything on the subject.

While I think it is cool to have another transportation option at Disney and I do love the monorail, this concept actually terrifies me. Maybe I've seen too many movies. However, I am scared of heights, well not really heights, more like the sudden stop after the fall. The monorail doesn't frighten me and I'm kinda sad that the line can't be expanded. I'm not sure if I would use this transportation option, especially if there is no A/C or some type of ventilation. There's no way you can put people in boxes in the summer Florida heat and expect a good outcome. I was wondering if perhaps these would be open air like they used to be where there is a solid frame, but no windows. Sure, it will be warm, but there will be a breeze from the movement and the higher altitude, so maybe that's why there's no A/C.

I think I will have to see the line and take the shortest route to try it out once - that is if I can even get the courage to get on.

We're all speculating so much, but I can't even imagine how there would be no air conditioning. Without that, it would have to be open-air, which would present more safety issues/people-control issues.

A lot of the gondola systems in the world are not air conditioned. This system of not air conditioned will have a nice ventilation system but won't be full on open air either.

But they're not all in Florida, right? I just can't even imagine a ventilation system that will make me want to ride in the afternoon Florida sun without A/C.

I hope I'm wrong and they surprise me though.

I'd have to find one in a warmer climate. I think it will be okay.

Actually, now that I think about it, since there's always a chance for breakdowns (both the transport and A/C), it would probably be a bad idea to get in a fully enclosed glass case, relying on the A/C. If that drops out, or if the ride stops AND the A/C drops out that could be very dangerous. Maybe open-airish, like @rteetz described, is better.

I'd prefer A/C but with natural ventilation as a back-up.

And how "open-airish" can they get and still prevent people from doing stupid things?

As I said, I hope I'm pleasantly surprised. But I'm sort of heat averse to start with.

I would imagine it kinda cage-y. Solid bottom frame with a bar top. Kinda like the old sky rides, but bigger.

Imagine that, but with the rails all the way around the top to the roof.

Remind me why they took those out of the MK?

Maintenance costs and lack of theming. Created bad show because you saw backstage and rooftops
