I say this not to criticize but hopefully to raise awareness to Disney executives.

****

While I know that there is a very serious line that the Disney execs must walk to try to improve security without increasing worry. However, sooner or later I think Disney is going to have to truly make up their mind of what they want. Personally I don't worry more when I see more security, though the corporate perception is the opposite. I feel safer and it doesn't take away from my magic if I am safe.

While in line for Space Mountain this past weekend, I was approximately in the middle portion of the queue where there is really no quick way out should something happen. Suddenly the worst things started running through my mind......."if something happens now, where do I go?". Answer was, while many attractions have quick exits for emergencies, this specific part of the attraction does not (please refrain from accusing me of hinting to future terrorists of places to attack as they likely are not reading here if they are looking for spots).

While standing in this part of the queue I then began thinking back to when I came in through security and realized that it woudn't stop anyone except for someone carrying a large bomb. Not only that, if I were really smart, which mosts people planning trouble usually are, I could stand for a few moments, scope out the guards and decide which one I'd like to go to, to get whatever I wanted through. Point is, there are many, if not most security guards that while they do search you can put a small box under some changes of shirts, food, etc and they won't dig down to see it.

Point is, if you wanted to cause problems, serious problems, and you have a halfway intelligent thought process, you probably have a 85-90% chance of accomplishing your goal, even with security measures heightened.

I love Disney World, probably too much, and while the last thing I want is slower entry, and more privacy intruded. However, Im not asking that they do background checks on me. I simply can appreciate if they would check everyone's bags completely. If you are bringing it in, and know in advance it is going to be checked, you shouldn't be ashamed of them checking it.

My thought process is that there is no way that an airline that carries 200 people should have a higher security measure than a company that at any point in time may have over 60,000 people within it's gates (in just one park).

If reality is something you don't want to hear, stop reading now::::::::::::
********************************************************************************************************************

If a coordinated effort from multiple parks was accomplished, there legitimately and easily could be a toll much like that of the World Trade Center, if not worse, even with the heightened security measures.

I think about this everytime I get on a monorail and realize there is nobody protecting them. I was happy and bothered at the same time this past week by something I saw. I went to Disney in the busiest time in March and throughout the week of July 4, and even on my trip this past week, not until my last day did I see someone standing at the Monorail station asking to see tickets before allowing them on, and even with that, half the people got by without being checked. That was the first time in my years of going to Disney (as an AP holder and going monthly) that I have seen them doing that, and even with it, it was useless as people just walked right around the lady (who was attempting to check everyone all by herself).

I just think something has to be done. With inconsistency comes failure. I don't one day want to see Disney shut down indefinately due to an extreme attack. I still have a major problem that the No-Fly zone was softened. At the current No-Fly standards of Disney, an aircraft entering the no-fly zone would/could make impact within 30 seconds, which is no time for any reaction or warning. This to me means there is NO no-fly zone. While that may not be controlled by Disney, it is a shame.

My point is that I feel that the little security measures that are at Disney now are merely a show to make us (the guests) "feel" safe, while it saves Disney the perception they know will come with bringing in bag checking machines like the airports use, and more importantly to them, saves them money. I feel like Disney is playing a game of Russian Roulette.

I care so much because I, as most people know, that Disney has been proven to be scouted by Terrorists as tapes of security intelligence was found in Germany.

This problem could be solved by either re-training the current security guards and paying them better or hiring a more legitimate security staff to control the entrances.

The security entrances should be located at the gates of the monorails along with the gates of the parks. Right now Disney monorails are COMPLETELY unprotected against attack. Should an attack be accomplished at the perfect time of two trains crossing, hundreds of people could die.

Not only that, let's remove the "terrorist" idea. Right now a gun can so easily be taken into the park that it disgusts me. Disney, please do the right thing and protect all of your guests and in the long run, your parks and your image.

This world thinks in hindsight. I hope Disney is not doing the same. I think right now if someone wanted something to happen, it's a done deal.

No security guard should check a bag less than another. They all should check thoroughly every single time. It may take longer, but that's at least better than not having a park to go to one day. Also with money invested, it could be made quicker with a more efficient system.

Also, why was the lady only checking tickets one day? That should be every day and it shouldn't be one lady. It should be a system set up and organized that doesn't allow anyone through.

im not asking to build concrete walls around Disney, but folkes, if you think you are safe in the parks right now, you are sadly mistaken. It's nothing more than an image.

To add to this...........if Disney wants to improve their public image with this before it gets ruined they need to do something before long. It's only a matter of time before a prime time network like NBC does an undercover story on this and burns Disney publicy on a Worldwide stage. You know it's coming.

Disney, please improve security, make it consistent and make my family safe!

Do you really think it is possible to be totally safe anywhere? Disney cannot make you totally safe. I can't beleive you think they can. We all take risks every day. Driving to work is a huge one! Would you have them enclose Disny World in a large bubble, surrounded by armed guards? Would that make you feel better? I'm not trying to be rude, but I can't believe you are serious.

I find some Disney security superficial -- especially bag checks.

I think Disney had to give the appearance that they were providing security.

However, the entire time that you are on Disney property -- except while in a bathroom or a changing room -- Disney can have you on camera. Cameras are everywhere and can zoom in on any activity.

I disagree with you. I think Disney has many security measures in place. Just because you don't seem them doesn't mean there aren't any. Disney is known for their security procedures in the park, other companies consult with them.

They also have local police departments in the parks also.

I think that people can be twisted by paranoia. It is better to not live in fear and overcontemplate how things can happen. The sad fact is that something can happen anywhere and we cannot live in a police state. Having visited East Germany in the communist days and seeing guards with machine guns is not a pleasant sight. Do you want that at Disney too?

Anything is possible anywhere, you only live once! Enjoy your life while you can!

We have that at Grand Central station!

Disney has spent mega bucks on security since 9/11 and it would not surprise me at all if along with those Bioscans Disney has or will have in near future
security devices such as Bomb-sniffing technology (there are polymer devices already in use that can pick up on tiny trace amounts of explosive vapors from over 20 feet away).Or the full body backscatter X-ray (which has already been tested at the Orlando airport).
Disney has security cameras everywhere if you know where to look. I have seen more security camers at Disney than at Las Vegas. Disney even sends some their people to help train Police officers in the event of a terrosit attack. One of the things the bag checks and the Bio scans does is it slows people down when they enter the parks thereby giving security a better view of the guests entering the parks. I am not talking just about the bag check secuirty but about the undercover security people who are just inside the gates. Take a look around when you enter. That guest in the outdated shirt may be security. They are all over the parks. How do think Disney is able to find lost children so fast when they are told a child is lost?
Don't assume that the size of an iceberg can be assessed solely by what is viewable above water level.
This is Disney and we see what Disney wants us to see.
Thus the top of the iceburg only.

No place is completely safe from a "crazy" who wants to take innocent people out.

Will this keep me from visiting "the happiest Place On Earth"?
Of cours not.
Have fun at Disney everyone!

After seeing the World Trade Center collaspe, I thought that those kind of thoughts would haunt me forever...until about 3 weeks later, and I was back on the subway, going out to dinner, enjoying life with friends and family. Quite frankly, thinking that way will make you nuts! My Mom, who lives in SW Florida still worries about my wife, our baby, and me, but I always tell her that there's nowhere else I'd rather live. I had read reports that Walt Disney World and the NYPD, as well as other key city's security teams, set up workshops to bounce ideas off one another on how to be more alert and to train how to be more effective in battling terrorism before another attack can take place. That's something that all Disney visitors can take heart in, as from first hand experience, the NYPD is the greatest police force in the world!! Terrorism's a part of reality these days, and there's nothing wrong with being careful...you just can't let the worries run your life.

Well, managed to skim thru your opinion; and two things come to mind---
neurotic
paranoid
it's not a perfect world; deal with it
Things will look better tomorrow

I agree with you about the monorail. I feel they should do a bag check before allowing anyone to board.

As for the lack of security in the parks, let me say that there is ALOT of under cover security. Cameras are everywhere. That tourist you see wearing goofy ears, might not be a tourist afterall. That couple walking the park, may not be a couple after all. I know this because my car broke down at the contemporary. The security who came to help me identified themselves, but were not dressed in security uniforms. They looked like tourists. Were either on foot or in vehicles not marked as Disney's.

You may be worrying over something you have no control over, may not happen and may already be a subject for address............ :)

Very well said. Thank you. :)

don't be so paranoid, you're in WDW!! if you really feel this way, how do you enjoy yourself on vacation? i'm sorry but i agree with the other posters here that say no place is 100% safe and if someone really wanted something to happen it would happen no matter HOW MUCH security was in place.

Deep breath in....deep breath out....

the rest is all part of the ride!!! Don't borrow trouble!!!

Do you feel truly safe at the mall? How about the grocery store? How about in your home? Do you have a safe room in your home? Do you use antibacterial gel all the time? Do you shake hands? Do your kids ride a school bus? Do you fly out of an airport - what about the people who don't go through security?

You can go on and on. If it is my time, it's my time. I'm waiting for Hurricane Rita to hit now. Can I do anything about stopping that? Nope, just prepare the best I can.

I'm gonna live my life the best I can.

What would you like them to do? Frisk people? Search under dresses? Put up x-ray machines at every park entrance? Search people every time they board any Disney transportation? Search everybody entering my favorite PI nightclub? I'm from DC and they don't even do that here.

I suppose I've always thought that the ticket checker is there before the monorail gates not to keep interlopers out, but to make sure you have your ticket already since the ticket booths are at the TTC, not the front gates, and you'd have to come back to TTC if you went over there intending to buy a ticket. I've never bothered to pull my AP out to show them.

Is there an award for the longest post out there? The OP is massive...

Well maybe I am a little over paranoid, however, I think some are a little naive about the security.

Safetymom: Say what you like, but you are really overlooking everything. So they have security you can't see. Let me ask you something. If I got a gun through security, never pulled it out, never acted suspicious until the moment I wanted to use it, what good will police or hidden security do me in the park? None.

Im not only speaking of terrorists. I know no security can COMPLETELY make you safe.

However, it is VERY naive to think that the security guards are serving a purpose. Were they not hired to serve a purpose? If so, what was that purpose? They are NOT checking bags as they should be.

While I know nobody can FULLy protect you, I find it really concerning how easily it would be to get weapons in the park.

I agree with most of you that you can't live in fear and I don't as funny as that may sound. However, I do find a problem in the INCONSISTENCY that is there in the security system.

Regardless of what you want to think there is NO, AND I CAN PROVE IT security on the monorail system. Want proof? Go to WDW on any given day, get on the tram, go to the monorail station, get on the monorail, and see how many stops you have to make along the way. See how many people are "really" watching you. It isn't happening.

Im not even so much worried that anything would happen to me. Im worried for others but more importantly Im bothered that Disney hasn't done more to protect itself. They may have spent millions up on millions of dollars, but if they spent that much money and still have those huge loopholes, that are that obvious, I see a problem.

Again, I agree with most of you in your responses. However, I still think there is a completely naive bias to think that Disney has done the appropriate level of security and monitoring. The security that is in uniform at the gates is nothing more than a smokescreen.

I say these things not to condemn Disney but in hopes that they can realize the true dangers.
