Disney Quarter 1 Earnings Report

True and I've bought 3 iPads in my lifetime...

It's just a stark contrast...iger has been bad/weird in comments since the espn gaffe...

The iPad (and all business product pitches) was "this this will revolutionize the computing experience and make it unique to everyone...we'll have to put you in a longline to get one..."

The avatar comments are the opposite...not for investor confidence at all.

I know that Disney is being safe when it comes to a RoL opening date - but I'm a bit surprised that they wouldn't have used this presentation to announce that it's opening on Sunday, were that the case. I can't imagine investors are fond of the show considering it's now pushing 10 months delayed, so it's a bit odd that they wouldn't try to reassure them by saying "Hey, we know it's late, but we're proud to announce a launch date!"

Then again, I hope to be proven wrong.

They're downplaying it...understandably...

But so should we...frankly. It's just a show...it's fantasmic...

A nice addition...but not a gate turner/game changer by any stretch.

Careful with that assumption.

Haha I feel like I'm the @rteetz comparing Pandora to wizarding world police.

But I do want to see animal kingdom do well. So I wish Pandora all the best.

Potter has broad appeal outside the park...avatar does not by any metric. If you read the chatter after the recent script and production announcements regarding sequels...90% of the feedback was "who cares?". I'm not kidding...avatar had its moment.

This is why it was always dangerous to do this...and to take so long. I think it's very possible that the gates empty at ak just slightly later after this opening and it becomes a "1 and done"

I hope not...but it is possible.

Bob is currently on CNBC for an interview. Says he believes there is far too much pessimism regarding ESPN.

He says you are seeing some erosion of the typical cable bundle and they have strategies moving forward.

Iger says it's too early to say when Disney will break off ESPN from the bundles.

He also says there is a very strong possibility of Disney releasing a Disney branded direct to consumer service in the US.

Bob says they never expected Rogue One to be as big as the force awakens.

He's wrong...because the system that made it big is changing/going away.

He's just banking it doesn't crash before he shuffles off...

Bob Iger reiterates he will stay last 2018 if it's in the best interest of the company.

Iger says being on Trumps economic council is a great opportunity for him to hear from business leaders and to have a connection to the president.

Pandora is a very big land with an E-ticket attraction unlike any other e-ticket they have ever built. Avatar will turn Animal Kingdom into a full day experience according to Iger.
The two attractions they are adding total of 13 minutes of ride time. I know there is more to the area than those two attractions, but it's not that big of a time suck unless you are waiting in line.

Not a whole lot of added ride time in New Fantasyland either. Also look at Potter, not a lot of added ride time in either potter land.

well, the land itself is an attraction with the walking trails and interactive bioluminescent plants, etc. - plus the restaurants and the "unique drink location" - it will have a different feel during the day than at night .... I think there will be plenty of things to occupy you

I definitely agree with this. I'm excited for Avatarland, basically for curiosity sake and I am hoping the rides will be neat, but there is absolutely NO appeal to me based on Avatar. I've never seen the movie, and honestly, have no desire to. On the flip side, we love Harry Potter, read the books, watch the movies, can't wait to go to US someday to visit. Potter definitely has a FAR larger fan base and will have a far longer-lasting appeal.

Yeah the whole Avatar thing is never going to have the pop culture appeal of Harry Potter. Universal was probably in dire need of a highly themed and immersive area like that. It's been over 15 years since the first Harry Potter movie was released and now almost 20 years since Philosopher's Stone was released in the UK. Now with more movies from the broader universe coming out. It's a huge draw to their parks. They're in the game now for sure.

But WDW does need some new regular additions. While the IP is a head-scratcher kinda dated I'm still going to go and check it out because it's something new. It however won't have the mass draw that Harry Potter does. I do however think this will accomplish some crowd stretching in the short term. Toy Story Land will add onto that for the young families. Star Wars could easily cause some operational and crowd management headaches if they aren't careful.

Iger believes there is too much interruption in commercial televison.
Well I agree with that but I know he's coming at it from a whole different standpoint than me. I rarely watch weekly shows on live TV..it's all DVR so I can skip through the commercials. I also find that commercial breaks sometimes come in weird spots. Like the show has only been on for 4 mins and you're going to take another commercial break??

ETA: wait are we talking about commercials on tv or did I just completely misunderstand lol.

Disney says they are seeing a shift in attendance due to their transition to demand based pricing.
Sooo are they saying that the attendance is down because of that or at least that it didn't help? Cuz yeah if that's the reason or at least a large enough reason in their minds then they may just want to hold off for a while on dynamic pricing for multi-day tickets.

That statement is the biggest hedge I've ever seen by Disney...

They're aren't saying if it's good/bad, intended/surprising, or worrying/encouraging.

They just don't know and I give them credit for not saying something stupid. It translates to: "we'll see"

But here's what you can't spin: declining attendance is a loss of potential revenue and profit.

You can have increased prices and decrease attendance for only so long...so those lines will cross and you'll have two arrows down.

I think it's clear many of those that complain about price increases effects that some "negative nancies" have been complaining about around here and ruining the magic is starting to come true...

...which is the only way consumer math works in the end. There is a limit to pricing on everything...always has been.
