Disney Quarter 1 Earnings Report

I will agree that attendance was down some during Christmas week. However after New Years due to when the holiday fell it was more crowded than normal.

Not now IMO, but agree for sure XMAS week which is far more important IMO. Was way too crowded in the past.

They made up for some of that lost attendance the week after New Years though. It was more crowded that week than the previous couple years.

I think if you weren't there for marathon you'd see what many of us have been talking about...

It's definitely more "thin" than I have seen it in years - especially due to the economic conditions - and you know I spend a lot of time watching these things...as opposed to standing in line for soarin', "wishes", and the mine strain.

I never go the same times repeatedly...that's why it's so stark to me...

In the last few years...it's been November, January, June, december, April, July, February...

...things are flat. There's no way around that. Can't gauge a special event and get an accurate feel.

And that 5% dip is YUGE...no pun intended.

You not surprisingly interpreted that wrong...

Nobody is saying it was "better" during Christmas week. They want it packed and are P*Ss*d about it behind the scenes. Have no doubt.

You're about the only person around here that thinks they actually buys that flimsy "we want to reduce crowds" excuse. They don't.

100% spot on. :thumbsup2

Which is exactly why we are going so often, much improved.

My guess is it won't last for long with what's coming, so nows the time.

No doubt but it was still much busier than normal during marathon weekend due to the timing of New Years.

Tuesday there was a picture of main street at about 1PM and it looked empty.

Im saying it was better. I believe that, but from my point of view not Disney's it's awesome.

Gotcha...

Though you have said in the past that they "want" reduced crowds...

Noooooooo...nope...nein...nada

I have said I wish they would double the price of everything to reduce crowds, because the product is just too popular.

But that's not saying it's best for Disney.

I will admit I have said disney would prefer "x" revenue on fewer guests, than "x" revenue on more guests. And that crowds and waits have to be the biggest complaint at WDW.

I do question blacking out XMAS week if they really want maximum crowds at all times though.

I'm pro reduced crowds regardless, but will be going anyway.

Interesting. When we have looked into it for a family of five DCL has always been more expensive than WDW. DCL is quite pricey compared to other cruise lines like Royal or Carnival.

I was thinking the same thing. I priced them out and (granted we're a family of 5) it was WAY cheaper to go to WDW than DCL. It wasn't even close, especially when you add in gratuities, even just a couple smaller shore excursions, etc.

So something that I thought of (and not sure if there is an answer here for it), how do the extras ticketed events count towards the numbers as far as the dip in attendnace? For example, Disney had more Mickey Christmas events than ever if I remember correctly. If someone has say a 7 day pass and spends the day at the park, and then goes to a ticketed event at night, does that single person count as two people by way of attendance?

I don't remember how they count those into attendance.

How many films have disney made in the last year compared to couple of years?

It feels like they're churning out more and more films each year - but I might be wrong?

If they're making more films and earning less then they've maybe gone too far on quantity over quality.

Quantity over quality. Disney did the exact same thing in the early 90s under Eisner. They pushed their studios to the limits.

I don't think there is currently a quality issue though. Disney had the top 5 movies of 2016. That's pretty amazing.

I think it helps that Disney's movies are somewhat diversified. It isn't just one studio churning them all out. They've got the Disney animated studio, then the live action. Then they have Pixar, don't they have a separate area and staff? Then Marvel is separate. And Lucasfilm is separate.

In the 90s it was just the Disney live action and animated divisions, right?

Yes that's a big part of it. You have marvel, Pixar, Lucas, live action, and animation all playing roles.

Actually when Eisner came in and brought Katzenburg they pushed the studios to their limits. Ron Miller had created Touchstone under the Disney name which did adult type films. So they had touchstone, Disney animation, Disney live action, and Eisner and Katzenburg created two more studios under the Disney name for various films.
