Having a conversation with friends today that led us to this...I know Disney has their own power plant and fire dept but do they have their own police dept. (besides just security?) or do they use Orlando police? For that matter, does Celebration have its own police and fire?

Walt Disney World is serviced by Reedy Creek Emergency Services. RCES includes both fire/rescue and ems services. Walt Disney World Security provides most security for the property and does stop speeders (they do not ticket) security also has its own K9 units however the police force that serves most of property is the Orange County Sheriff's Dept.

Thanks so much, OnWithTheShow! That clears things up! And having been an English major in college, I also take issue with the whole inflammable/flammable thing! ;)

In fact, OCSD along with FHP just stepped up speed traps on site.

Yes, in a way I think it's horrible to see those Orange County Police cars on the side of the road as you enter Disney, ticketing people on their way into their vacation :( Isn't there some other way to stop people from speeding through there without ruining the start of their vacation?

Speed Bumps.

Road Spikes.

Snipers.

I don't know, giving out tickets to offenders doesn't sound so bad...
;)

Actually Orange County Sheriff's Dept Deputies are strongly DISCOURAGED from ticketing people with out of state license plates or rental cars. For exactly the reason of not ruining peoples vacations.

Mr. Show, has Disney given the Sheriff permission to continue persuits onto property? That one little trick saved me - er - I mean people I've heard about lots of money over the years.

Well on one recent trip they were just inside the main gate pulling people over right and left. Maybe they were just warning people, i guess that could be.

Dude.......You think cuz you make it to the confines of Disney property, the pixie dust can save a speeding family from a serious injury crash, or worse? When I take my family there, we are even more relaxed and not as quick to worry about traffic, speeding cars or recklessness. Even more reason to step up enforcement to keep people honest and ensure everyone has a full and happy vacation.

Actually, having spent my driving life on Los Angeles freeways, I found central Florida to be absolutely terrifying. From the minimum speed signs which didn’t seem to prevent people from speeding along at 25 mph down I-4 to the odd habit of people stopping where the connector from the Beeline merges onto to the Interstate, the trip from the airport to property was more stressful than the East L.A. Interchange on New Year’s Eve. I will not even start on the criminal nature of toll roads.

And the area around WDW has long been, well, let’s just say a major source of revenue for the local governments, especially from cars with out-of-state plates or the old rental car tags (all the rental cars in Florida used to have a license plate that had a “Y” – this lasted until carjackers started preying on people leaving Miami’s airport). For kicks one time we brought a radar detector with us – the readings were so high we thought we could have cooked microwave popcorn in the back seat.

In the early times the accident rate on WDW was significantly lower than any other metro area with the same traffic density. The road system was designed in the 1970’s using all the high speed overpasses and flyways that really make a roadway work. The system held up very well until the original master plan was scrapped and they went to stoplights throughout property. There’s nothing like an intersection – no matter how well marked – to cause accident rates to soar. Combined with the abandonment of a true internal transportation system that shoved thousands of cars and scores more busses onto the roads – I do agree that the roads on WDW are no longer safe.

Additional enforcement isn’t going to improve the condition on the property’s road. They need to have much of the traffic removed from them (by creating a real transportation system) and the roads themselves need to be realigned to fit new development patterns.

Actually Orange and Osceola County Sheriff's officers patrol WDW property. Since the property is so large it is in both counties. The part that is covered by Orange County is served by the Orange County Sheriff's Dept. and Reedy Creek Emergency Services. The part that is in Osceola County is served by the Osceola County Sheriff's Department and Osceola County Fire/Rescue.

And since Celebration is also in Osceola County it is covered by Osceola County Sheriff's and Fire/Rescue.

I wouldn't think Disney is getting money from local law enforcement, but I do think they should consider putting the new automated photo machines along closely monitored routes:jester:

Actually, this is NOT TRUE.

Disney has actually asked Orange County to step up patrols on property. In the past week, I have seen numerous speed traps, and MANY cars being pulled over for speeding. There was one particular trap... one officer was doing Radar, and two or three were pulling them over and writing them tickets. I know of a bunch of people who have recieved tickets.

Just because you're on Disney property does not give you the right to drive wrecklessly by speeding. Orange County WILL pull you over, and they WILL give you a ticket. Disney isn't the only one who likes tourist money... Orange County loves your money, too. Tickets can run up to $500.

i have been to disney so many times and it seems like the are no police at all . but i always drive the speed limit..:o

:( :D Believe me, they are there. They can hide on WDW property as well as on the roadways. I've seen them in a number of places on property:( No, I have never been stopped.:smooth:

:( Some difference between the orange county sheriffs office and that north central county in florida on route 301 where they provide a good deal of that counties income from traffic tickets .Triple A even advises people not to go through that area. {I can't think of the name of the town offhand}:(

Walt Disney World creates a sense of security with a combination of county deputies and a 750-person private security force. While the guards can keep watch, only deputies can make arrests.

Our Security Department is greater than 750 persons. There's actually a few other sub departments within that one branch.

I can ASSURE you... this is not always the case. In fact this past week, they have written MANY tickets to both Cast Members, AND guests.

Don't always beleive everything you read in the Sentinal, when it comes to Disney. They are infamous for not always being accurate.
