Disney planes

Thats a bummer...my 3 year old loves them! Too bad they dont have a dusty somewhere (you know, like lightening mcqueen at HS) :-(

I was hoping with the new movie coming out they would have something. My little guy knows all the planes names...his walls are covered with the disney planes wall stickers....and he has all the diecast planes

The Planes movie was not a big success and not very popular so I doubt they would have attractions based on it or anywhere to see the characters. My son and his friends who are big Cars fans hated Planes and actually got bored. Many of his classmates were the same way. I personally couldnt sit through the whole thing....:(

Wow, I totally disagree with this. We loved Planes and so do all the kids I know. Based on how fast the Planes stuff flies out of the Disney Store and Toys R Us (no pun intended lol) I'd have to say that many, many people disagree with your assumption. If Planes wasn't popular, why does the sequel open today?

This past Dec the only place we found Planes stuff was at DTD in the store that has the build your own potato head as you walk in.. there was one little rack with some Planes stuff towards the back of the store... :(

We actually got to see the new Planes Fire & Rescue movie at DTD last month during a Free DVC Member special event (what a neat experience)! I must say the 2nd movie is way better than the first one IMHO.

It was my DS2's first movie theater experience and he did really well. We did find a fair amount of merchandise in the stores during our trip but as with most stuff, I figured I could wait until we got home to get some of the die cast planes and things like that at Walmart or Target (DS's birthday was last week so perfect gift idea for him). Lets just say the Planes merchandise is cheaper at Target/Walmart/TRU but it is very popular and sells out quickly! It took some perseverance on my part to get the items we wanted. So I definitely don't think this movie is a bomb by any sense of the word!

Other than the merchandise and some special events during the premiere weekend (we got to hear talks from the writer and director) during the Cars Masters weekend at DTD, there really wasn't much else Planes related in the parks.

Sorry, but this movie was made to go directly to DVD and did not get a rave review from anyone.....Disney is trying really hard to gain the same popularity for Planes as it did for Cars which is why they are doing Planes 2 etc....but it's not working...

Reception
Critical response
Planes received generally negative reviews from critics. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 26% approval rating with an average rating of 4.6/10 based on 112 reviews. The website's consensus reads, "Planes has enough bright colors, goofy voices, and slick animation to distract some young viewers for 92 minutes -- and probably sell plenty of toys in the bargain -- but on nearly every other level, it's a Disney disappointment."[34] Another review aggregator, Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, calculated a score of 39 based on 32 reviews, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[35]

Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle gave the film two and half stars out of four, saying, "Many will enter theaters thinking this is a Pixar film, with the raised expectations that accompany that mistake. But even cynical animation fans will see there's quality here. After a little turbulence, Planes comes in for a nice landing."[37] Alonso Duralde of The Wrap gave the film a positive review, saying, "As shameless an attempt by Disney to sell more bedspreads to the under-10s as Planes is, it nonetheless manages to be a minor lark that will at least mildly amuse anyone who ever thrust their arms outward and pretended to soar over the landscape."[38] Justin Chang of Variety gave the film a negative review, saying, "Planes is so overrun with broad cultural stereotypes that it should come with free ethnic-sensitivity training for especially impressionable kids."[39] James Rocchi of MSN Movies gave the film one out of five stars, saying, "Planes borrows a world from Cars, but even compared to that soulless exercise in well-merchandised animated automotive adventure, Planes is dead in its big, googly eyes and hollow inside."[40] Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a negative review, saying, "Despite the more aerodynamic setting, this Cars 3D offshoot emerges as an uninspired retread."[41] Jordan Hoffman of the New York Daily News gave the film one out of five stars, saying, "The jokes in Planes are runway flat, and parents will likely reach for the air-sickness bag."[42]

Bill Goodykoontz of The Arizona Republic gave the film two out of five stars, saying, "Planes was originally scheduled to be released straight to video. Although the smallest children might like bits and pieces of it, there's nothing in the movie that suggests why Disney strayed from its original plan."[43] David Hiltbrand of The Philadelphia Inquirer gave the film one out of four stars, saying, "The animated film has all the hallmarks of a straight-to-DVD project — inferior plot, dull writing, cheap drawing — perhaps because it was intended for the bargain bin at Target, Walmart, and Costco."[44] Jen Chaney of The Washington Post gave the film one and a half stars out of four, saying, "This film is 100 percent devoid of surprises. It's the story of an underestimated underdog that's like every other kid-friendly, life-coachy story about an underestimated underdog."[45] Rafer Guzman of Newsday gave the film one and a half stars out of four, saying, "If Planes were a reasonably priced download, you'd gladly use it to sedate your kids during a long car ride. As a theatrical, 3-D release, however, Planes will sedate you, too."[46] Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times gave the film two out of five stars, saying, Planes is for the most part content to imitate rather than innovate, presumably hoping to reap a respectable fraction of the box office numbers of Cars and Cars 2, which together made hundreds of millions of dollars."[47]

As PP said Planes was originally intended to be direct-to-video, and only at the last minute did it get a theatrical release. Given its low expectations it did pretty well, I guess, since there is a sequel. It's more cheaply made than most other Pixar and Disney movies (and it shows), which might explain why a sequel was made.

The difference between Planes and Cars is that with Cars, it was such a high quality product with great animation, plot, characters that everyone from Tiny tots to adults loved it. Planes, it's so poorly made with a "meh" plot, "meh" characters that only tiny tots like it and I mean tiny. The majority of the rest of the population is dissapointed.

At the DVC Member preview last month of the new Planes movie we were told that the second one was being made concurrently with the first one because they felt there was so much story to tell. Hence why there is only a year between the movies. So early on they decided to focus on the racing with the first one and then the second story evolved when Dusty could no longer race.

We got to see the movie in 3D at the preview (I normally don't pay extra for most 3D movies so it was a nice treat) and I thought the 3D really added a lot to the sequel. It did not feel cheaply made at all.

I liked the original CARS a lot (so not expecting to like it), hated CARS 2. Planes was just ok, but I really liked Planes 2 for what its worth.

We hated Cars 2 as well and we are all huge Cars fans.

Fairytalelover, it is a shame that someone who clearly loves Disney this much (judging by the number of trips taken, and even a Disney wedding) is so sour. Kellykins1218 stated that they loved Planes and know kids who love Planes and you respond almost aggressively with multiple back to back posts just to show them how wrong they are. What is that?!

Businesses exist to make money, and Disney does so while interjecting magic into our every day lives. If you (and some critics) don't like a particular Disney movie, that is fine, but there is no need to be rude to someone who did enjoy it.
