Disney Pins... Some Questions...

Hi !

I am not sure if there is a another board I should be posting this on, if so please let me know and I will delete and re-post.

My question is in regards to pin trading... I would like to show my DD & DS how to do this or how to approach a CM to do this with my assitance ofcourse. They are young, only 4 but DS is very verbal and bright and I think he woudl get a kcik out of doing it with a pion or two.

Now, my question.. where is the best palce to buy a small starter set of pins for the sole purpose of trading. I understand, hopefully not mistakenly, that you can buy some Disney sets relatively inexpensively and use them to trade with CM's.

Any thoughts, ideas or helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As a member of the "Thread Killers", I wanted to find a post with no answers and try to help.

I have never been to Walt Disneyworld, but have been several times to Disneyland. At Disneyland, most of the shops have pins. There are some shops in the park and at Downtown Disney that are ONLY pin shops. Regarding a starter kit, I've seen all different kinds - some with lanyards, some without, some based on basic characters (ie Mickey, Minnie, etc), some based on themes such as the Princesses, or certain movies, etc. I think it is just a matter of preference. We buy our pins based on just the ones we like - purchasing one or two at a time.

Regarding trading with CM, at Disneyland often the CM didn't have any left or didn't trade at all. I think it is hit or miss. We only asked one time and were told the above. One time a CM approached my children with pins to trade, so not sure what you will find.

We have been to Disneyworld trice before. My son loves pin trading and has already pulled out his lanyards and pins for our planned trip in Janruary. You can buy a 4 pin started set in almost any store. Inexpensive is another thing. I felt that all there pins a somewhat pricey. Not bad to buy one but when you getting a few it can add up quickly.

As for trading. Any Cast Member with a green lanyard has to trade with a child. On both trips we found them everywhere. Be sure to teach your child that they dont have to trade if that person has nothing good. Just go to next person. Again my son loves it and I hope your children do to.

pin trading. DW bought approx 50 pins on EBAY in different
lots for Approx $2.50 to $3.00 shipping included.

At the parks the pins Start @ $6.

CM with Green or Teal lanyards trade with kids 12 and under only.

I second Donald duck dad and would also say to try good old Ebay. I have seen many starter sets on there for a fraction of the prices you would pay in the world.
You could also buy the lanyard and pins seprate as there are some really nice pins that you can purchase on there own.

9 out of 10 cm`s we saw last sep had a lanyard and was happy to trade with any child that approached and asked to see there pin`s.
When you trade always keep your eyes open for pins with little mickey heads on as these pins are called hidden mickey`s and are not sold in the parks just traded via cm`s.

Do the kids have to have the pins on a lanyard to have CMs trade with them? DS7 would like to start pin trading but doesn't want to wear the lanyard, he just wants to pin them on his shirt.

My husband and I are taking out 8 and 6 year old boys in November.

Hey, we were all newbies at one time.

A lanyard is the thing you wear around your neck that people put pins on. Some people use the bottom of the lanyard to attach with a clip a plastic sleeve or similar sleeve to hold their tickets, etc. It looks like a lanyard some people wear to work with their work ID attached. My husband wears one to work. The lanyards come in different sizes, colors, embroidered with different characters on it, etc. A lot of variety. You can use plain lanyards purchased elsewhere, or you can purchase them at Disney or in the Disney stores. I have seen them at the Disney store at my mall.

The pins are just that - pins. Tons of different kinds of pins that you can buy at Disneyland and WDW and elsewhere. The pins are nice and are mostly character pins - Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, etc - every character you can imagine. The pins may depict a certain park, a certain outfit, a certain year, celebration, whatever - you name it, I'm sure there is a pin for it. People pin the pins to their lanyards and wear the lanyards into the park. Often people want to trade their pins for something someone else is wearing. Some pins are older, more collectable, therefore worth more. There have been a ton of pins made over the years and for some it is a lifetime hobby. To others, a serious business.

We started out with pins mailed to us from the travel agency we used to book our very first trip to Disneyland - many years ago. Since then we have bought several different pins for our lanyards each time we have gone to Disney. We aren't serious collectors though - just do it for fun.

It is all in fun, and not a requirement to enjoy your vacation. Hope this helps. I am sure there many others who can give you more detail and info on this topic.

That's a very helpful place and they could answer your questions too. I've gotten pins at the Character outlets to trade. You have to be careful about where you buy them on ebay. Some are not tradeable pins. They must have official Disney on the back.
They do not have to be on a lanyard. I don't like wearing mine either. But you must have the back on the pin. The green lanyard cast members can trade only with kids. The others can too but not if they have the pin on that you want to trade. They may not have 2 of the same pins on. I've traded with a cast member just to get rid of pins I have 2 of. I can retrade it later.
