Jamian - This shot is amazing! As is the next post you have of Main Street after hours. I love this one with the lights out on Main Street and the Castle as the focale point. You obiviously have access so I am assuming you do photography work for Disney. I love your photography.

So, I am arriving this Saturday to WDW and I want to shoot the fireworks. I am using a Nikon DSLR (D5000) and I have an 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens - both are VR lens. Unfortunatley, I do not have a tripod. Any tips on how to best shoot the fireworks? Since I do not have a tripod, should I shoot at normal shutter speed only? BTW...do you remember what shutter speed you used to get this shot?

If you want to get a shot like what Jamian posted, I'd suggest you do whatever you can to get a tripod, AND get a remote trigger so you don't have to touch the camera when shooting the fireworks. Shots like the one Jamian posted are about a 4-6 second exposure. Set the ISO to 100 or 200, and set the f/stop around 11.

You can still get some good fireworks shots without the tripod, but you won't get the long streaks of light the fireworks make. For those, you'll need an ISO around 1600 and f/stop around 20. The shutter speed you can try how ever slow of a speed you can use without camera shake.

Thank you! I have the remote but not the tripod. :confused3 I'll see if I can get one before we fly out Saturday morning.

You can get a decent tripod for 20-40 bucks at Walmart or Rad Shak right over on 192 in Kiss. I have been using mine for years (the Walmart 20 buck one)

Oh! Another trick I use given I have no remote trigger or option for one, is I use the timer setting so it doesn't shoot till after I have hit the button and gotten my hand clear! Only have a ten second delay available, but 2 seconds would be fine.

Also for fireworks at normal speeds, I set focus manually at infinity, and set mode for multiple exposures and will let it go for 3 or 4 or 5 shots on each exposure- one or more of them will be good!

Thanks for the comments! Sadly, I am not a professional photographer for Disney I just hang around until the parks close and the crowds clear out. wdwensel is correct, a tripod is essential for night photography. As a last resort you could sit your camera on a trash can or something but you won't have much control over your compositon. The fireworks shot was 6 sec @ f/9 ISO 100. I had a circular polarizer on the lens as well which allowed a longer exposure than I could have normally gotten at f/9.
