Disney offers family $5,000, free trip to keep quiet.

Well, they aren't keeping it too quiet. I saw a piece on the local news last night. Disney is using dogs to sniff out bed bugs so they can treat those rooms.

Has anyone read an article stating exactly where overseas they know these bedbugs are? I hate generalizations like "foreign". Foreign could mean Antarctica and I think it would be too cold for a bedbug to survive there. I have never heard of a bedbug here and never seen one either.

AMEN!

I have traveled a lot in Europe. Guess what NO BEDBUGS!! And I stay at two star or even one star hotels......
As a matter of fact at almost all European hotels lines are changed DAILY as opposed to the US where they are changed only on the third day of your stay so it seems to me that the bedbug problem is probably ours and we don't need to blame "Foreigners"

As for this family...... IF they go the offer they claim then they should have shut up, no one is going to give them MORE!
:rotfl2:

Everyone CALM DOWN!

I travel weekly..... IF this was the epidemic this board acts like it was at SOME point it seems like the law of averages would have me find these things.

20 years of travel almost weekly. Instances of bedbugs NONE!!!!

We've been hearing about this for a few years now here in NY. It doesn't matter dump..or deluxe. It is a real problem. Even some of your high end hotels in NYC. There have been stories on the news of travelers who bring them home and then can't get them out of the house. Wind up losing furniture and carpeting to the problem. The information I've seen indicates that you should take off your comforter from the bed, as they are not washed or changed after each guest. You should lift off the headboards. Which..frankly, was pretty easy. We tried it at the last hotel we were in..and they usually just lift forward from the wall. You can have a person on each end..lift up and then forward. Easy enough. You will see tell-tale signs. The bugs themselves or stains..or what is well..."bug poo".
They also suggest you look at the walls in the room..if you see smudges in places where there shouldn't be, that could be a sign of a bug that well...ate..and it's the blood. I know..gross,:crazy2: I'm sorry. They suggest you lift up the mattress and look in the corners and the seams, this is where they hide. Also..do not place your clothing in the drawers, unless you inspect the seams in the drawers. Personally there aren't enough drawers for our things anyway, so we ask for another couple of stands that hold your luggage, and we leave everything in the cases. This way you don't have to wonder if you are packing any of the critters up and taking them home with you. Don't keep your luggage on the floor. Use the stands they provide.
We stayed at the WL last May, and we did do a quick look around the room and removed the bedding and checked the mattresses..it really wasn't a big deal and took about 5 minutes. It gave me some peace of mind. I've done this even when we travel to upstate NY..and stayed in a Sleep Inn..or the Holiday Inn. Unfortunately, it's a sign of the times. The pesticides that erradicated them previously..we don't use any longer, and there is alot more foreign travel than ever before. I personally thought Disney would have seen this before now..(and probably has..we're only hearing about it now). You have people who come from all over the world, foreign countries where these
critters have thrived, flocking to Disney for their magical vacations. Now making a comeback in the good old U S of A! I mean they are hotels and thousands upon thousands of people sleep in those beds. I have a feeling getting a reservation in FW is going to be getting more difficult than it already is. Plenty of people who own RV's enjoy bringing them to FW because it's great campground, but also because with your own RV you aren't worried about who last laid their head on your pillow.

Hey...maybe Disney will have a new rate of room... Instead of various views like the "Water View" or the "Standard View"...we will have the choice of The "Bug Free"..at an additional cost..or the "Take your chances" where you're testing fate!:rotfl2:

OK, this TOTALLY CREEPS ME OUT!!!! We will be staying at the Poly, and let me tell you, I WILL be checking out our room thoroughly!!!!!!!

YUCK!

Oh yeah, I heard bed bugs don't like dives.

From what I've read, and seen on TV(and there have been several shows..Dateline was the most detailed) they thrive in warmer tropical climates. Florida probably makes for a very nice "re-location" for them:rotfl:

Although, we've had our share of this in NY. Some the more expensive upscale Manhattan hotels. Dump or Deluxe..they show no preference.

Does not surprise me. My "FRIENDS" stayed at Disney last year and had horrible service with torn, shredded towels, bedspreads, shower curtains.

Needless to say, after they complained to their TA and to the CMs they were reimbursed part of their expenses.

Yes, shredded towels. The horrors! Bedspreads and shower curtains too! I'm amazed your "friends" (why the quotations?) are still alive. I wonder what came together to have all 3 of those shredded, maybe a chipper got loose in the room, at least they missed that, could have been worse.

Perhaps the poster's "friends" were in a resort that was due for some reburbishments. Either way, I think the point the poster was trying to make is that there was some sort of restitution made for the stay...in the same way the family that experienced the bed bug issue was reimbursed. It wasn't my impression they thought they would die from shredded towels, or a shredded shower curtain. ;)

Off topic, but I would love to sneak a few squirrels home with me. We don't have those either. Could I offer a few rats or bats in exchange for some squirrels?

You can have all the squirrells you want. They are rodents just like rats, and probably even more destructive to homes.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll be doing a quick check once we arrive! :)

In response to an earlier post, you cannot get lice by going to the grocery store.

I am sure the people did not think they were going to die or have something horrible happen to them from shredded towels and bedspreads, but depending on where they were staying they were probably shelling out a lot of cash for the room and expected and deserved better than that. If they were staying at a $39.00 a night roadside motel then maybe getting less than perfect towels and bedding would be acceptable, but last time I checked Disney did not have $39.00 a room. Sounds like you just like a good fight. They call people like you hmmmm.......psychic vampires or energy vampires (people who get energy and pleasure by upsetting people).

First let me say this is gross...we will in Disney in 51 days and I will checking our rooms very carefully. We will be staying 4 nights at ASsp and 3 nights at CR.

Disnut8...I can assure you Disney doesn't "pay" you to keep quiet but they will try to make sure you do. We have a fairly significant problem in 2005 a CBR and when we returned home Disney contacted us regarding it and offered us money to compensate us....the stipulation was that we had to sign a document from Disney's legal department stating that we would not ever discuss the problem!!!! It won't stop us from going!!!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that the local news station here in Tampa is talking about this on the 11pm news. I am watching it and will report back on what they say when it is over. It looks like this REALLY happened!

Basically they just repeated the original info in this thread. There was not a confirmation from Disney. They only stated that yes, sometimes guests are unhappy with their stay but they do everything they can to make it as "magical" as possible. The official bug person they interviewed said to check between the mattress and the box spring at the head board and that if you saw lots of little black "dots" that there probably was "bead bugs".

I personally think considering how BIG WDW resort is they are doing a really great job keeping things neat and tidy. When you think of how many people stay in the resorts from all over the world they must be doing something right. I have never once heard of an "epidemic" of any kind over there. All we can do is check the rooms/beds for signs of this and for all us germ phobes out there continue to bring our lysol. I spray the entire room down before I let my family come in. We then remove the bedspreads and I start checking the beds and the entire room for any "major" things. We have never once asked to move to another room we have been extremely lucky.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

I have heard bedbugs are more common than people think. I bought a memory foam mattress for this reason. The bugs supposedly can't live in these types of mattresses.

God I swear, some people are just stupid. . .

Bugs are a fact of life people. Get over it. Yeah, its gross when you find them but heck. . .just ask to be moved. . .don't live with them for your entire vacation. Mosquitoes are aweful, but if you visit florida in the humid summer months you are going to find mosquitoes. Trust me, I would almost rather have bed bugs than Florida mosquitoes. Those suckers are HUGE. Also, you might just get a fly or two in your outdoor meal because that's what flies do. . .

Bugs are a part of life. . .no you don't have to like it or live with it but damn, to cancel a trip or reroute plans because of it? Go live in a third world country for awhile. . .ya know, volunteer for the peace corps. . .maybe that will change your mind. . .

The bed bugs are coming from the guests who stay there so its them not the hotel at fault. Disney has had many outbrakes of them over the years and the fact they have not become a major problem shows they are being delt with. We have never had them nor to we expect to ever have them in our room.
