Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2023 Edition

Curious as to why you think this. Has he said anything to indicate this was a good strategic move?
Not who you replied to, but I agree with their thoughts. The "inevitability" as Iger put it, to expand into the sports gambling market can only be explained by the fact that it is a huge expanding market that Disney is not currently in. If you look at any of the sports betting platforms that have developed in the last decade, all of them have introduced virtual/live casino games like digital slots, live blackjack, game shows, etc. If Disney somehow DIDN'T expand into traditional gambling products, it would be more of a surprise than if they didn't. It's kind of the logical next step when you reach a point where you need higher profits from your sports gambling division.

All that said, I absolutely hate that Disney is getting involved in this and I can't stand the prevalence of gambling ads in today's media.

At the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, earlier this month, Iger stated that sports betting (i.e. gambling) is "inevitable". Bob Chapek had publicly expressed a desire to move ESPN and its platform into sports betting. Iger sounds more reluctant, but he literally said sports betting was quote/endquote "inevitable". Once you open the door to that sweet-sweet gambling money, you aren't going to cut it off for other areas of the company.

There is a boat load of money to be made with casinos. Yes, the pun is intended! TWDC needs to make money. As a business, that's how you pay the bills and that's how you attract investors. Period.

The dogs can stare and bark all they want, but that money train is going to keep on rolling down that track. :)

Nothing to do with this thread, but I had to say that I generally peruse Disboards on my phone. I always assumed your profile pic was a personal pic until today as I’m on the iPad. Today I had a revelation 😂
So you're not Anakin Skywalker? Because as Jedi Master Kenobi, I'd like to share my disappointment with your vocational choices.

According to @brooksbarnesNYT, Perlmutter was told by phone on Wednesday that “Marvel Entertainment, a small division centered on consumer products and run separately from Marvel Studios, was redundant and would be folded into larger Disney business units.”
Disney also laid off Rob Steffens, co-president of Marvel Entertainment, and John Turitzin, chief counsel for the division. Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Entertainment, will remain with the company and report to Kevin Feige.

Does this mean that Marvel Comics might become...GOOD again? Dare I hope that they just totally CLEAN HOUSE over there?

Him and Iger had beef from when he tried to fire Feige. Of course he would be one of the first to go.

Yeah, but I always thought he was just too entrenched or had some good blackmail dirt on someone. Honestly, the guy has a reputation for being pretty difficult, but he worked the system well. He also ran Marvel Comics into the ground at a time when the movies were on top of the world. This shakeup is long needed!

He always had that slime ball personality to me. Good riddance!
