We have done many over the years and just don't find them worth the cost. My kids enjoy seeing them in the parks just as much.You're not paying for the food there. You're paying for your kids interactions with the characters, and they joy it brings them. The food? Very few people care. It's just something to do while waiting for characters to come to your table.
I went a few times as a kid, and the best memories I had were interacting with Donald Duck and Goofy at one of these places. It was sheer joy for the 1-2 minutes I had. I still have those pictures. I don't remember what food I ate, it never mattered. The memories matter.

I don't think the character interactions are even that good at most of the character dining. Most its rushed and cramped. Garden grill and Topplinos are great though, but most of them you can get better interactions in the park.
