Disney Mousekeeping Standards

When we checked into POP Century over the 4th of July weekend, there was a condom wrapper on the floor. It was by the nightstand, between the beds.

We went to the front desk to complain. They moved us, refunded 1 night's stay, and gave us 3 fast passes. The room they moved us to had a big build-up of black mold/mildew/gunk around the bottom of the toilet.

Ewwwww!

Oh my goodness so gross
I thought the dirty underwear that were behind the nightstand were bad

I could understand being grossed out by a condom, but a wrapper? Not much different from candy wrappers that I'll find in other hotels.

Yeah, that's kind of true.

I think when you go into a hotel room, it's all about not having it thrown in your face that people er, slept in the room right before you got there, know what I mean?

Seeing a condom wrapper kind of ruins that. Ditto for hairs in the bathroom, underwear behind the nightstand, etc. None of those things are going to hurt you, but it's still gross and takes away from that magical feeling.

It can be hit or miss. I think sometimes disneys rooms look "tired". We had a room at POR before the refurbishment that had a lot of mold in the bathroom and the furniture was old and tired looking. I have also found others people hair in the bathroom on checkin. I always bring sanitizing wipes and wipe down all of the door knobs, remotes, faucets etc. Don't consider myself a germaphobe but after spending over $5K on a room, I don't feel like one of us getting sick and who knows if the person(s) in the room before you were sick.

Someone mentioned there are cutbacks on mousekeepers. Why on earth would this be true? Isn't Disney doing great financially, making millions and millions of dollars?

Don't get me wrong - I have never complained about housekeeping! I just clean it up myself to my 'standards'. I know that they are busy, so I'll wash someone else hair off the tub enclosure, if need be. It's not a big deal to me. However, it isn't really perfect either and will trouble some people.

I don't blame the people doing the work. It is just that there are a lot fewer of them around these days, it seems. A person can only be expected to do so much in the amount of time provided. Basically, cutbacks are everywhere.

LOL! OK, fair enough! Perhaps I am in denial! If you saw my house, you might be hard pressed to maintain that white glove argument though! I live with 2 Newfoundland dogs and they are mud, drool and fur distributors! It is a constant battle to stay ahead of it all! LOL! Perhaps I am a white glove with black fur trim kind of a gal. (except the fur trim is all over the white gloves....).

This made me laugh. We lived with a Newfie and a 10 year old. You get so used to keeping on top of it that when there is less mess you feel that you need to go looking for it!

Financial management is all about the bottom line, squeezing the profit margin. If someone observes that Disney is spending more on housekeeping than the average resort, and surveys reveal that the main reason people stay in the resort is to be close to the parks, EMH, etc., and not cleanliness, then some bean counter somewhere is going to ask "How much business will we lose by reducing housekeeping staff levels, how much will we save on staffing costs, and which will produce the greater profit?"

Just made us wonder, if they missed the wrapper, what else did they miss?

We have been going to Disney every year since 1993 and there has been a serious decline in service, particularly the last ten years. Housekeeping has suffered severely. For the past three stays, there has been garbage left in our room from the previous occupants. I have noticed that they are not even taking proper care of the public areas. Lately, towels seem to be golden and a lot of the towels are very tattered and should be retired. I am talking about towels with very long strings hanging from them and barely have any material left on them any more. It is very sad. People spend a lot of money on their Disney hotel room and deserve to have a clean, well appointed room.

This is not acceptable!

Go and enjoy your vacation. Wipe down the room with Clorox wipes if it makes you feel better, but unless you are also going to wipe down every ride, every rope in every line, every bench, every table and chairs where you eat, every monorail.... you get the idea. You will encounter more germs out and about than could possibly be in your single room.

This is kind of how I feel. Every time you enter a park and press your finger in that scan thing....germs. When you go to a buffet, how many people in line ahead of you have touched that serving spoon, fork, etc before you? There are so many germs that I don't even stress about it. We just wash our hands before eating and use hand sanitizer every once in a while.

I'll likely catch some flack for this one.....

WDW Mousekeepers are wonderful people - but they are sort of in the same category as all the folks in the world that have to clean rooms :(. It's not a career that returns a lot of cash, in terms of salary.

Now- Disney will tell you over and over that you don't have to tip anyone. I love Disney - but I call bull feces :). All that follows is personal opinion, and 12 years of experience....

TIP your Mousekeeper. Help that person make a decent living. Then watch what happens to your room, beyond basic Disney standards. Really - with any service staff (restaurant, hotel, cab....)? Our behavior is to create a relationship - one that insures exemplary service. Tipping helps - a LOT. And it's not because anyone is greedy.... they just need to feed THEIR family :(,

No flack from me. I agree totally.

However it would be nice if companies that make billions can pay people a salary that they can live on and provide guests with services that warrant the expense they are charging them.

As well as not cutting staff by telling them to clean twice as many rooms, half as well as they should.

I really notice the decline in mousekeeping standards on our recent (8/12 - 8/26) stay at Pop Century. One time the mousekeeper left a bottle of cleaning solution on the toilet. The bed was never really made. The top sheet and bedspread were just thrown on top of the bottom sheet. My daughter had maps of the parks and had indicated what attractions we needed to do. These were thrown away. It wasn't terrible, but just wasn't up to the previous standards we had come to expect from Disney, even at a value resort.
