Disney Mousekeeping Standards

Cleanliness is relative. We have found mousekeeping to be mediocre - possibly because they're rushed since the resorts are nearly full all the time, or maybe because housekeepers in the area are unionized so standards are a little different. We've had a few instances of excess dust on the dresser/TV/night stand, drink rings from prior guests on the table and night stand, crumbs under the table, etc. Minor things but still gross.

If you have a medical need for an extra clean room such as allergies, you can request a deep clean prior to your arrival. You may need to wait a little longer for your room to be ready when you arrive.

LOL. We also take our clorox wipes and wipe the room down, but do not consider ourselves "White Glove" people. I was talking more about some posts that I have read that they found dust on top of the bathroom mirror(why anyone would check up there is beyond me) and on the back of the TV etc. So when you said that you don't dust light bulbs then I think you would be kicked out of the White Glove society:rotfl: I think we are just part of the cleanliness society.
Maybe, I'm a secondary group member. The Ivory Glove Travelers Group! I like the idea of a cleanliness society.

I hate to break this to you, and I don't mean to be critical, but IMHO, that makes you a 'white glove' person. Nothing wrong with that, it's just that it's more attention to cleanliness than the average person. Or, to put it another way, don't be ashamed of being a white glove person.

Yep...I am probably whatever the opposite of a "white glove" person is. I would never really consider doing any sort of cleaning while staying at a hotel (beyond tidying up my own belongings and removing my shed hair from the shower). The room should be reasonably clean upon arrival (sheets changed, toilet and shower scrubbed, run the vacuum, wipe down the surfaces), and after that I'm happy with general tidying up throughout my stay. Wipe down the counters, replace towels and toiletries, make the bed, and I'm a happy camper. All of that is way more than I do in my own house on a daily basis. I mean, I don't even know the last time I actually dusted in my house. Probably the last time my mother came for a visit. :rolleyes1

We've been Disney Vacation Club members since 2001 and have stayed onsite for every visit since then.....probably about 25 visits. As DVC members we do not receive daily housekeeping, but, rather a "trash and towel" on day 4 and a full cleaning on day 7 or 8, not sure since we rarely stay more than 5 or 6 nights. We take our kitchen trash out on a daily basis as we're leaving in the morning and since we usually have a 1 bdrm with w/d in unit I usually wash our bath towels after 2 uses, so don't really need the trash and towel service. However, upon check-in, I have noticed a definite decline in housekeeping services over the past 14 years. Our units are never as clean now as they were back in those days....things like crumbs in sofa cushions, fingerprints on nightstands/living room tables, or drink rings on furniture. I've also seen a decline in the way/timetable maintenance on rooms is performed. There seems to be a lot more wear and tear, just generally what I think of as ...guests not caring what damages they do and maintenance not repairing as they should. As others have said, I also travel with Clorox wipes and give all surfaces a wipe down shortly after check-in. We also put everything we will be using in the kitchen thru a dishwasher cycle...since we've taken dirty dishes, glassware, etc. out of the cabinet on more than one occasion over the years. We've only had once occasion that I insisted the room be recleaned or we get assigned another room. I was literally sticking to the kitchen floor as I walked on the tile, and there was something dripped, spilled in the refrigerator and had also dripped onto the floor in front of the frig. The bathroom floor was also sticky with what looked like a fruit punch or Koolaid which had been quickly swiped at but was all sticky streaks and the same stuff was spattered all over the bathroom wall......looked like maybe a child dropped a sippy cup or something and it spattered everywhere. We asked for a housekeeping manager to come up and view the condition of the room that we were given at check-in and supposedly had been cleaned....she was appalled. But, usually, as others have said.....it's only minor things that take me a few minutes to do and I'm sure the room is at least sanitary.

this is how i feel... the last thing i wanna do on my expensive vacation is clean. i make sure the room is tidy every day so when we leave to hit the parks, they actually can clean up. with 5 of us, we accumulate a lot of "stuff".

I take clorox wipes with me whenever I travel. I use them on light switches, tv remote, toilet, all door handles and light switches. I have found the rooms to be relatively clean at Disney. There have been a few occasions where the a/c wasn't working but they addressed the issue and fixed them. Last year we had extra towels as it is only me and DH so put out the Do Not Disturb sign but we never received a bag on the door handle with towels, etc.

Last year was my family of 4 first visit. Mousekeeping was great. This year we are going with my sister-in-law. 8 of us total.

OP, another thing to keep in mind is that they don't do what I think of as a total cleaning during your stay. They will clean up the sink and bath area, and pick up the sleeping area. But they don't dust every day, and I think they only vacuum if there is obvious debris on the carpet. Sheets are not changed every day unless you request them to be.

I have stayed at almost all of the WDW deluxes and many offsite hotels (Marriotts, the Omni) and I can say, overall, the WDW resort rooms have been dirtier upon arrival and during our stays versus the offsite hotels.

My belief is they are giving the housekeepers too many rooms. Dust, fingerprints, articles left behind, all par for the course. They seem to be focusing on the sheets and the bathrooms, which makes sense.

I agree with a previous poster about bringing a pack of Clorox wipes and giving the room a once-over if necessary. I wouldn't go to the front desk unless it was something really bad. I also agree about the carpets.

Anyway, don't be scared off but don't be alarmed if the room isn't sparkling either.

I am a so so clean person at home. When i travel to disney or any hotel im a bit paranoid.I dont like other peoples germ. I have to say i find disney to be as clean as most any other hotel.

We bring clorox wipes for every non bathroom hard surface. This includes the headboards, backs of all chairs, hooks to hold our bags, hangers and shelving. I bring bathroom cleaner and clean every surface in the bathroom and the sink. Most times the shower and toilet really need some love. We even was out the fridge. We dont use any cloth products that are already in the room. We will use their freshly laundered sheets and blankets. Which we request as soon as we get in the room. We bring air mattresses to sleep on top of the beds, and our own pillows. when we stay in a room with a couch we cover it with freshly laundered blankets before we sit on it with our jammies.

We might be a little paranoid:magnify:

I'll likely catch some flack for this one.....

WDW Mousekeepers are wonderful people - but they are sort of in the same category as all the folks in the world that have to clean rooms :(. It's not a career that returns a lot of cash, in terms of salary.

Now- Disney will tell you over and over that you don't have to tip anyone. I love Disney - but I call bull feces :). All that follows is personal opinion, and 12 years of experience....

TIP your Mousekeeper. Help that person make a decent living. Then watch what happens to your room, beyond basic Disney standards. Really - with any service staff (restaurant, hotel, cab....)? Our behavior is to create a relationship - one that insures exemplary service. Tipping helps - a LOT. And it's not because anyone is greedy.... they just need to feed THEIR family :(,

We've visited WDW twice, both stays at the Grand Floridian, which does a great job with housekeeping. Even there I wipe most surfaces down with clorox wipes upon our arrival. I've read too many posts here about people getting stomach bugs or strep and spending days puking in their resort room bathrooms to trust that mousekeeping has the time and dedication to really sanitize things everyone in a room touches (flusher, light switches, remote, clock, coffee maker, etc.). I would not blink an eye at some dust here and there--would make me feel more at home, in fact!

You put an air mattress on top of bed? Is that not slippery? Do you put an air mattress that is not blown up on bed? I was at a hotel the other week that is typically a good hotel and the bed was awful- right down to the mattress. I had to change rooms and look over the new bed. I am now so paranoid about bed mattresses in hotels. Yuck!

I thinking tipping is a great idea. Thanks!

I'm not going on vacation and cleaning my hotel room. Period. If the room is not up to par, I will speak to the manager. When I come back at the end of the day, I expect the room to be cleaned as requested.
I tip.

I agree, tipping is a good thing for many reasons.

But tipping isn't going to help if the management isn't giving the housekeepers enough time to thoroughly clean the rooms in between guests.

We blow up the air mattress. No it works very well for us, might be iffy with small children though.

Go and enjoy your vacation. Wipe down the room with Clorox wipes if it makes you feel better, but unless you are also going to wipe down every ride, every rope in every line, every bench, every table and chairs where you eat, every monorail.... you get the idea. You will encounter more germs out and about than could possibly be in your single room.

I have never had any problems at all. Disney housekeeping is some of the best I have ever seen. If you have an issue, call down to the front desk and they will take care of it with no problem!

When we checked into POP Century over the 4th of July weekend, there was a condom wrapper on the floor. It was by the nightstand, between the beds.

We went to the front desk to complain. They moved us, refunded 1 night's stay, and gave us 3 fast passes. The room they moved us to had a big build-up of black mold/mildew/gunk around the bottom of the toilet.
