I am a Disney Magazine subscriber who was very excited to see that four new Walt Disney Treasures DVDs were going to be released. The ad specifically stated that the DVDs would be released on Tuesday, Dec. 2nd. I have been looking forward to purchasing these DVDs from the time that I originally saw the ad. Today on Dec. 2nd I went to a number of websites looking to purchase these titles online only to find out that they will not be released until May 25, 2004. I have to say that I am very disappointed with Disney Magazine for making this mistake. It is incredibly frustrating to be excited about a product only to be pushed off for another five months. My advice to Disney DVD/Magazine is to make sure your information is reliable and correct before printing and advertising it to the public.

One would assume that problems had arisen with the production/distribution/etc that would lead up to the release of these DVDs.

While it's disappointing, I don't think the magazine made a mistake by publishing what they thought was an accurate date.

Now you just get to anticipate these DVDs even more. :)

I'm sorry everyone! I accidently posted this thread twice. I thought I had deleted the first one.

And I responded to the other thread. :(

I was surprised to see the advert in the Disney Magazine because I had read online that they DVDs were being delayed. I guess it was too late to pull the ad.

I too was looking forward to these DVDs. I guess I'll just have to settle for Pirates of the Caribbean.

Well, at least you can get the Pirates of the Caribbean DVD today!

The announcement in the Disney magazine was not a mistake. They had planned on releasing the DVDs in Decemeber. The problem was that demand was much, much greater than expected and the could not find the manufacturing capacity to make enough DVD's to meet the pre-orders, much less stock store shelves. Apparently there are so many DVD's coming out this year from various companies that the DVD manufacturers are having trouble keeping up. Becuase of this, Disney decided to hold off shipping until the can be sure they will have enough DVDs to meet demand.

There has been some discussion over whether or not the delay was caused by duplication problems. Here's a tidbit that I found in alt.video.dvd:

After the delay became public, Internet rumors began circulating that the releases were pushed back because of racism in some of the war shorts from Walt Disney on the Front Lines. That release includes 32 shorts made during World War II, including wartime propaganda films and educational films.

(BVHE VP of brand marketing Lori) MacPherson disputes that content concerns were an issue, however, saying the discs have already been replicated and will stay the same for the May release.

So, if the delay is not due to racism and the disks have already been replicated, what's the holdup? It's the tin cans! There will be a 6-month delay because Disney used a tin can gimmick on its initial Treasures release:

"Although the studio could replicate enough DVDs to meet demand for the December release, the tin case packaging that all Disney Treasures have been released in could not be reproduced in time," said MacPherson.

"We thought it would really be a good idea to move this release out to order more tins and make enough product to meet demand," she said.

There have been rumors floating around that Disney wanted to increase the number of DVDs in this "limited" edition in anticipation of selling a greater number of these titles. I guess we won't ever know for sure.

But the fact of the matter is that Disney knew at least a month before the latest Disney Magazine was sent out that the release of these DVDs was going to be delayed. I guess there wasn't enough time to modify the ad.
