Disney Magazine Coming to an End?

I know that it will probably go away, but it would be great if some solution was found. I can dream...

It seems to me that someone else who was big at Disney was a dreamer too. Some Walt guy or something like that.

:earsgirl: Well said! Thank you! :flower:

I did a search on this thread and only one poster used the word deserve. As I've read I've primarily seen people who are disappointed and people who hope it will stay. I, myself, hope that it does stay. Does that mean I do not understand business or that I want Disney to lose money? No, it means I'm a dreamer and I wish for things I want.

These boards are a place you can express your diappointment in the loss of a cool magazine and know that others who share your loss will sympathize. Other Disney dreamers like you.

::yes:: HereHere! Well said... ::yes::

(1) I am a WDW AP holder,
(2) A DL AP holder,
(3) a DVC Member,
(4) a Disney stockholder.
(5) In the last year I have visited .....(several times)...... I don't feel that I deserve anything.

1-Me too.
2-Me too.
3-Me too.
4-Me too.
5-Me too, and neither do I.

(6)You do realize that Disney is a publicly held company
(7)and not all shareholders are absolute Disney adicts as we are right?
(8)If you held shares in a company and every year one portion continued to lose money wouldn't you want to know why?

6-I had no idea.
7-Proably a fair guess.
8-Sources? What is the basis to your assumption that the Magazine was not profitable?

(9)I have a friend who inherited 6000 shares of Disney and he goes over the annual report and bugs me about every line. This type of stock owner is the norm not the exception.

9-Absolutely that type of stock holder is not an exception, I've purchased more shares than your friend inherited, and I too carefully review the publicly released financial data. None that I have seen, I might add specifically addresses the ROI or ROE on Disney Magazine.

(10)I have probably read every issue of Disney Magazine and would I miss it?
(11)Of course, but it is a business decision not a personal slight to all of its subscribers.
(12)Particularly with the internet I'm sure you can find better ride reviews, more pictures, more recipies and better movie reviews with clips.
(13)Is the magazine even that informative?
(14)I can't see how it could ever be profitable.

10-In one form or another it has been in publication for about 40 years. I would miss it as well.

11-Again, please cite your sources as to the benefits to the company for stopping publication. No business decision by definition is a personal attack.

12- Personal preferrences of various demographics must be taken into account for any well reasoned marketing tool to be effective.

13-Many would say yes, proably more than you may think.

14-Easy. 1-direct revenue stream created by sales (OTC and subscripts) as well as ads. 2-avoided or incremential marketing and branding expenses. All of the personel and tools needed to do the work prior to fulfillment are part of on goning company operations. So the overhead is also incremental.

(15) Maybe if you spent the millions of dollars to cover the publishing costs, the writers, photographers etc. you would deserve to have the magazine, but until then it is simply a business decision.
15-Again, "the writers, photographers etc" are all already in-house there will likely be little to no savings, they'll simply be reassigned. More importantly, all of the other divisions of TWDC that have sucessfully used the Magazine to reach and expand their customer base will be forced to find other (no doubt) more expensive means to meet their marketing objectives.

Excuse me, but I actually P-A-Y for my subscription.

It has another 2 years on it.

The only thing I "deserve" is to get what I have paid for.

The Jim Hill article linked to on the first page of this thread includes these quotes from what Hill describes as a Disney Magazine veteran:

And then the company shut down the Magic Kingdom Club and the Disney Club. Which robbed us of a lot of internal financial support, not to mention significantly cutting in to our subscriber base.

"Disney" Magazine were never what you'd call financially successful. By that I mean: We never had decent newstand sales. And for years now, our circulation rates have been artificially bolstered by all of those complimentary subscriptions that the company gave away to Disneyland & Disney World annual passholders.

But as long as the magazine was thought to be an effective marketing tool, management kept us alive. But now that the Net allows Disney to get the word out that much quicker to many more people at a far lower price point ... It's easy to see why they finally decided to shut us down.

On this thread it has been said...
that all of us subscribers are to be offered our money back or an alternative subscription to their "Family" mag.

I want my Disney or nothing at all...I don't subscribe to anything else. I read my Birnbaums and Passporter guides.

DM offers me a closer look at what's going on in the "world." Even being published every few months, it's always been more up to date than any other (besides the internet) Disney information source.

I went to Disney Online last Friday-as I was in a panic after reading this thread-and asked if there was going to be no more Disney Magazine. I received this response today(Monday the 18th), now whether they aren't saying I don't know but I hope its true!

"The rumor is not true we are not ceasing publication and you will receive the Summer 2005 on time.

If you should need further assistance, please be sure to include all previous e-mail correspondence.

Disney Magazine

I'd be lost without my magazine!

From a company spokesman ~

"Disney Magazine lost a significant number of subscribers after the company closed its Disney Club and Magic Kingdom Club, fan clubs that offered promotions and discounts. That affected the 'financial viability' of Disney Magazine, said Glenn Rosenbloom, vice president of the consumer magazines group." Orange County Register

The magazine is set to publish it's last issue this summer, 2005.

I am so sad I don't really know what to say! I so looked forward to February, May, August, and November for this reason. I got my 'dose of Disney' even when we lived in Alaska. I hoped that no matter where we moved in the world I would always have that to look forward to. I am seriously depressed!

I'm sad too :guilty: I really enjoyed the magazine and will be sorry to see it end :guilty:

I am sorry I stumbled onto this link. I and the rest of my family enjoy this magazine. We already get the family fun magazine, and it is NOT the disney magazine. I am hoping that this is just that, a rumor, but seeing how many things have changed... you never no. I can hope for a miracle.

Disney Magazine to publish last edition this summer

From staff and news-service reports

Disney Magazine, which has a circulation of roughly 500,000, will publish its final edition this summer after more than 30 years of informing Disney fans about the company's past, present and future.

Known as an "insider's guide," it covered people and events related to the theme parks and other Disney entertainment.

Disney Magazine lost a significant number of subscribers after the company closed its Disney Club and Magic Kingdom Club, fan clubs that offered promotions and discounts.

That affected the "financial viability" of Disney Magazine, said Glenn Rosenbloom, vice president of the consumer magazines group.

Disney's magazine group also is exploring the sale of Discover Magazine to focus on its target audience of families and children.

It publishes FamilyFun and Disney Adventure and plans to launch Wondertime, targeting mothers of children younger than 6.

Disney Magazine employed nearly 20 people, and the company is trying to place them in other positions within publishing, Rosenbloom said.
