Our cruise is set to come back on Memorial day, and I assumed we'd just fly out that day right up until Southwest released their prices and it's almost $400 more to fly out that monday vs spending the night and leaving early Tuesday morning :crazy2:. So, we were looking at just booking a hotel with an airport shuttle and leaving Tuesday morning. Neither of us wants to rent a car however, and I'm concerned about getting things like lunch and dinner that day.

I priced out a value room (Pop and All Star Movies) on Disney property, using Undercover Tourist and one night is not that far in price from an airport hotel. On the plus side, we'd get access to a food court and bus options to other Disney resorts/Disney Springs if we wanted to venture farther out for the evening meal. I don't see us doing more than hitting the pools and food court, but it's nice to know if we did want to go out, we could.

WWYD? value resort or just let it go and get the airport hotel.

Well, are you flying in the morning on Tuesday? You'd have to make arrangements with Magical Express from WDW resort to MCO. They will typically pick you up 3 hours before your flight. So, you'd have a one hour trip from port to WDW resort (at $35.00 per person) and then another 1 hour trip from WDW resort to airport in the morning.

If you get a room at the airport, it's still a one hour trip (but only one trip) and it'll still cost you $35.00 per person. There's also a food court (and other nice restaurants) at the airport.

I would find more to do at Disney then at the airport. However if it meant a very early ride on ME, that would make me stay at MCO.

The plan is to fly out fairly early Tuesday morning. Looks like an airport hotel is going to win over on this one, and we'll just eat dinner at the airport using the shuttle or see what is within walking distance.

To clarify, when I say airport hotel I mean hotel with an airport shuttle, not the Hyatt unless they run some kind of amazing black Friday deal that gets us an amazing rate.

The airport Hyatt is much nicer than any value resort. I'd stay there. And they have good food and a pool.

I assume you've bought your tickets? Are you going to spend more than $400 on hotel, food and any entertainment? I made the mistake of booking a few days earlier for cheaper airfare and then ended up spending double my savings, as I bought park tickets and a 'once in a lifetime' deluxe hotel night. Not your plan, but it did make me question my excuse for a 'savings' on airfare.

If you will have a whole day (Memorial Day) to spend in Orlando, then go with something at WDW, as you can at least spend some time at the free amenities. If you will really only have an afternoon, dinner and early to bed, then maybe you want something closer to the airport. If you choose the airport hotel, make sure you will have something to do that day.

no, haven't bought tickets yet just pricing things out via southwest. You're right having one more day in Orlando has potential to be a bigger expense than we anticipate. Both DH I feel like everyone is going to be exhausted at that point as we will have come off of 3 days at Universal then 3 days on the boat. Honestly, if we spent the day at the pool then ate at the food court I'd be ok with that.

There is a later flight out we could take that wouldn't have us getting on the ME at 4 am, but then we'd have time to kill on Tuesday. The instant you add park tickets our savings goes out the window, and I can see everyone just wanting to get home. I may just be gilding the lily here.

I'd say if you're just going to be sitting around waiting for the flight and spending money for a hotel and food, you might as well spend the $400 on airfare. In our case, the savings was more like $1000, but then, as I said, I filled those extra days with costly fun. But, we didn't mind adding to our vacation time, either.

One other option I would at least consider in your shoes is staying the night in Cocoa Beach. If I could find a hotel on the beach that was priced similar to an airport hotel, and transportation wasn't too expensive or difficult, I might do that then head to the airport from there on Tuesday. You could probably find one with some nice beachfront restaurants within walking distance.

staying the night in Cocoa Beach.

that's a good idea, we were planning on staying there the night before we get on the boat and just using the hotel's shuttle service to the port. Easy enough to reverse the process on the back end. Plus it's another day on the beach, this midwesterner will gladly take it.

It's early to buy tickets. Doesn't Southwest usually have sales a few months before the season. I've gotten emails about Fall sales, Winter sales. I'm sure you'll see one for Spring in a few months. Those ticket prices may come down.

Are you staying onsite at universal? If so, with only three days there and then a short cruise I can't see exhaustion being an issue.

I'm hoping so. Certainly if prices drop I will jump on getting us home that Monday.

Yes, but by the time we get back it will be 7 nights, 4 different check in/out of various places we're staying, time in the car/shuttle. I'm not worried about the kids, it'll be my dh I'm concerned about and us being "that" family people wind up filming having a meltdown in the middle of the port. :rotfl2:
