Having the same named ships with different companies is quite common. I believe NCL also a ship named the Dream but that is just part of the cruise business. Carnival also has a ship named the Magic.

I don't mind Dreams but I also would have preferred Fantasia for the other ship....I'll still sail them though!!!

Glad they finally announced it though.....did they announce the Godmothers of the new ships yet?

I must admit that they lack a certain originality nor do I like that DCL is somehow associated with Carnival - I do like Fantasia better than Fantasy - probably would have made more sense to call them Dreams and Wishes, if they were going with "Dream"

It looks like both the Carnival Dream and the Disney Dream will be sailing out of PC. Could be confusing for the shuttle drivers. At this time the Carnival Fantasy sails out of Louisiana and/or Alabama. I'm sure the Disney Fantasy will not be sailing out of either of those ports. ;)

Carnival has announced that the 130,000 GRT Carnival Dream will begin service in September 2009 and operate cruises out of Port Canaveral beginning December 2009. That suggests that there will be two ships called "Dream" operating out of Port Canaveral.

Carnival Cruise Lines has another "Dream Class" ship on order. The Carnival Magic is coming in 2011. (Yes, the Carnival Magic!) Assuming that the Disney Magic leaves Port Canaveral when the the Disney Dream does into service, at least there won't be two ships called "Magic" operating out of Port Canaveral.

The Carnival Fantasy is an older (1990) and smaller (70,367 GRT) ship. In fact, it's the oldest ship in Carnival's fleet. Following their usual pattern, chances are that Carnvival will sell the Carnival Fantasy in a few years, as Carnival launches newer, larger ships.

For a long time, the mainstream cruise lines avoided confusion by avoiding names that were already used by another line. But in recent years, that's changed. Now the cruise lines makes their cruise line names part of the ships' names to create names that are "unique names" anyway -- such as Carnival Dream and Disney Dream, or Disney Magic and Carnival Magic.

The ships should have been named:

2011 - Disney Arm

2012 - Disney Leg

LOL!!! How will Mickey pay for two ships in this economy... by charging us an arm and a leg. I crack myself up!:rotfl2:

So true. When you do a cruise search on Expedia, it lists all the cruises and the prices. All are pretty much the same except when you get to Disney. They are always about double what others charge for the same itineraries. They'd better start lowering their prices if they want to fill those ships. We love Disney. But are getting a little jaded they aren't awarding their loyal following. We have talked about venturing away to Royal Caribbean until the prices are more "reasonable". So our cruise this fall may be the last on DCL for awhile. :sad1:

But in IMO I don't like the names. I think that with all the people that they employ they could have used some imagination and thought of something unique to Disney only. But again its just my opinion.

Interesting line I've never noticed before about the new ships. (From CC's article about the names):

these new ships will measure 122,000 tons and carry 2,500 passengers, double occupancy. However, because Disney's load factor is a highest-in-the-industry at 150 percent (remember: lots of kids), the typical passenger count onboard will be closer to 3,750. Currently, Disney Magic and Disney Wonder can carry a full capacity of 2,400.

From todays shareholders meeting:

"It’s official! The newest ships in the Disney Cruise Line® fleet now have names – Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

Bob Iger, President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, announced the official names today at the 2009 Annual Meeting of Shareholders in Oakland, Calif. The Disney Dream is scheduled to launch in 2011, with the Disney Fantasy following soon after in 2012."

I agree, I don't like the names too much either. I was hoping for something Original not just copies of all the other ships out there *sigh* :sad2:

I sort of expected Dream, but prefer Wishes too. Imagination also might have been nice.

Can't wait for some real info on them!

I was hoping for Disney Animation. Corny, I know, but I thought it would have signified the very core of the company.

I'll still sail. I like Dreams but Fantasy seems rather blah. I agree that Wishes would have been a better choice.
How come no one asked us?? :confused3 :lmao: :rotfl2:

New ship names have been announced:

The Disney Dream launches in 2011

The Disney Fantasy launches in 2012

It was announced at the Annual Stockholders meeting.

I like Disney Dream. I have liked it since my cruise in 2003 when my Server said DCL wanted to build a new ship and call it "Disney Dream"

So we all kinda knew "Dream" would be coming.

As for Fantasy...it's OK. I would prefer Fantasia as well but oh well. I'm just glad that they are building the new ships and I hope I can save enough to sail on at least one of them.....

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, still scheduled for launch in 2011 and 2012.

I just got this email 28 minutes ago from DCL >..

Dear ..... (edited),
As part of the Disney Cruise Line® family, we want you to be among the first to know that our two new ships now have names—Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Bob Iger, Walt Disney Company President and CEO, announced the official names today at the Disney shareholder meeting in Oakland, California.

Like Disney Magic® and Disney Wonder® before them, the names of the two newest ships in our fleet were chosen with care to celebrate Disney's unique heritage-creating incredible worlds of fantasy where dreams really do come true. Disney Dream is scheduled to launch in 2011, with Disney Fantasy following soon after in 2012.

SEE THE CUTTING EDGE.
Disney Imagineers and ship builders have been working full-steam ahead since we first announced our two new vessels in 2007. On March 2, 2009, construction on both began at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany with a special steel cutting ceremony. The very first cuts created Disney's signature, art deco-inspired scrollwork that will grace the bows of both new ships.

Disney Announces Names for New Cruise Ships

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy to come online in 2011 and 2012

CELEBRATION, Fla. (March 10, 2009) — Today at the 2009 Annual Meeting of Shareholders of The Walt Disney Company, Disney announced the names of the company's two new cruise ships.

"Last week, steel cutting began on our next two Disney cruise ships. Today I'm pleased to announce their names," said Robert A. Iger, Disney president and CEO. "The Disney Dream will set sail in 2011, while the Disney Fantasy will hit the high seas in 2012."

Similar to the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the names were chosen to celebrate Disney's unique heritage of creating enchanting places and stories where dreams really do come true.

"The names are very telling of our brand and are part of our history," said Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Operations. "Disney is known for making dreams come true, and for creating worlds of fantasy that go beyond the imagination. The names are a natural choice for our ships."

As noted, Disney Cruise Line began construction on the new ships with a steel cutting ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The first piece of steel cut was part of the art deco inspired scrollwork that will grace the bow of the ships. Similar to the scrollwork on the existing Disney Cruise Line ships, Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the intricate pattern is reminiscent of the classic ocean liners of the 1930s, with added touches of Disney whimsy.

Since finalizing a contract with the Meyer Werft shipyard to build the two new ships, Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering have created a truly distinctive design. Over the next few years, construction will continue, bringing the design to reality, with the Disney Dream scheduled for delivery in 2011 and the Disney Fantasy in 2012.

The new ships will be purpose built with families in mind, and specially designed areas and activities for each member of the family to allow for both quality time together and wonderful individual experiences. The focus is to provide a setting where families can reconnect, adults can recharge and kids can immerse themselves in worlds only Disney can create.

The expansion will more than double the passenger capacity for Disney Cruise Line. Each ship will have 1,250 staterooms and will each be 128,000 tons.

EEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!

Come on DCL, how about originality????!!

I am sure I will like the new ships... just HATE the names! Why copy Carnival, of all cruise lines? Geesh.

I'm with you! I don't hate the names but why would they choose something that could confuse them with another line???
