Does DCL accept disney gift cards on board? My children have gotten some for birthday gifts and I was thinking it would be fun for them to spend them on our cruise.

Thanks in advance.

I dont know if this would work, but maybe you could use the gift cards at the Disney Store to purchase Disney Dollars and they could use those on the cruise. Just a thought:wave:

Yes you can use gift cards to purchase Disney Dollars using a Disney Store giftcard at Disney Store. I have done so myself.

This is specifically "allowed" so there shouldn't be any problems.

Are the Disney Dollars only good for the shops? Or can the kids use them in the arcade to play the games? Can they use them to buy a special drink that they can not get with their soda card? I am really leery about giving my ADHD teen ( not to mention the 11 yr old boys) spending privelages of any type as he probably won't pay attn to how much he has spent. I would love to give them Disney Dollars in their stocking for Christmas and let them save them for the cruise. With this cruise coming up, I figure I won't have to buy them much else besides stuff they need for the cruise for Christmas.
Is there a way to limit EACH childs spending? or do they just pay attn to the stateroom limits? Thanks in advance...Melissa

Everything on the ship is paid for through your Key To The World (KTTW) card. So you could take the disney dollars and put them on your room account. The kids could then either charge on their cards to the room or let you do it on your card if you are removing their charging priviledges.

Have fun!

Can't you use the Disney Dollars to pay towards your Room account during the cruise?

In a perfect world with perfect children, yes..taking their Disney Dollars and placing them on the room account would work. HOWEVER, we have 2 rooms with 8 people. In one room there will be 3 kids registered and if one is greedy and spends more than he is allowed, it will limit the other kids. I just don't foresee him keeping track of how much he spends. If it were to be individualized for each child, that could work. I have a few kids who are savers and a few who spend money the second it hits their pocket. I guess I will just have to go with them to the arcade and charge it myself. Any other ideas for keeping this fair and easy on me would be so greatly appreciated. I want the kids to have the independence I just don't trust the oldest one enough to make the right choices when it comes to limiting his spending. Perhaps I should just have a good time and iron out the finances when we get home. I don't want to be the spending police, but this vacation is a stretch for us, being a large family.
Thanks for all the replies! Melissa

I'm not sure if this helps, but you bill shows the charges by card. It was easy to see that DS 11 charged more than DD 9. With that said both of our children were will within the limits that we gave them.

if you want to go through the hassle I understand that you can go down to Guest Relations on a daily basis to get your status of your charges .... so you can see which each child has charged and discuss it with them right then & there ... maybe the fact that you can so closely monitor their spending will persuade them to pay attention to what they are charging???

We only have DD 13 year old to worry about when we cruise in Nov. (well, we have to worry about how DH and I charge too). We will be advising her what she can charge (i.e. arcade) and how much per day. She'll have a small notebook with her at all times to write down her charges so she can keep a running tab of how she's doing. Then when we check the status of our account, she has to explain any unaccounted for charges she placed.

Thanks for the idea about the notebook to keep track of spending. I have no doubt that 5 of my 6 kids will abide by spending limits, it is my oldest who has ADHD ( he's 16) and who has a habit of living beyond his means. I guess that is just something I will have to deal with when I get home.

When you said they can tell by card, does that mean each card has a different number on it? Like I had said before, I can't see how I would know who spent what if all 3 or 4 of them are in the same room. Last time we went to Disney we didn't allow the kids to charge. Thanks again for all the great ideas...Melissa

Good morning rcostello1.

you can use gift cards to purchase Disney Dollars using a Disney Store giftcard at Disney Store.

Humm. To review: my Disney Son or Disney Mom can use Disney Gift Cards to purchase Disney Dollars at Disney Stores any Disney Day of the Disney Week. Dang, dats delightful...

Someone told me that maybe you could use a pre paid visa card for each kid.
I checked with our bank and we can get one for each of the kids for around $5 bucks each. (we have 4) That way they would each have their own Pre paid visa assigned to their KTTW card. The card can be purchased for small amounts that seem more reasonable for kids KTTW cards. I have noticed on old docs that we could put on what ever CC number we wanted for charging priviledges. SO it sounds like this might work. Can anyone confirm this.
Keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

We took all charge ability off our kid's KTTW cards. Then when they wanted something, we made them take their Disney dollars to the Guest services desk, put it down for credit, then purchased the Quarter Master's cards or went to the shop to purchase the item. A bit of a pain, but it gave us control over what they spent, and emphasized the cash-in-cash-out concept.

excuse the newbie question here: what are Quarter Master's cards??

Quarter Masters is the video game room on deck 9. Instead of using quarters you buy debit cards in $10 denominations. They are really easy to mangle or lose in the machines, plus they will de-magnetize your KTTW card if kept side by side. If a CM is not in the room you have to go to Guest Services to replace or renew them. Not to mention that they are really easy for little kids to spend $10 in just minutes.:(

with 6 kids going in 6 directions at any given time, I see myself rushing back and forth to guest relations too many times a day to call this a vacation. As long as I can clearly tell who charged what, I will deal with the over spenders when we get home. Like I said before, the only one I am really worried about is the oldest who has ADHD and is very impulsive. Maybe by then we can get his new medicine adjusted so he won't be so impulsive. Do they actually list a name of who charged? Thanks..Melissa
