First let me say that I appreciate this well written explanation as I too have been wondering how this all works.
Second let me say that I'll just skip a meal of dining out or something to make up for the $25-$30 I could have gotten/saved by doing all this. Wow. That is an amazing feat for those of you who do it.
Honestly, I wonder if its more the mental aspect of "I did this and saved money", which gives a gratifying feeling, than it is about actually saving the $.
It is the gratifying feeling that I am saving thousands on my vacation that is allowing me to take multiple vacations.
I started with buying $4200 in Target cards in December at 10% from target during their holiday promotion. I spent $3,780. I had $1,800 in DVC fees in January to pay, airfare, and food and spending money. This money alone would be very tight to make it work.
It was at this time I learned about churning. I jumped in head first. So far I have paid:
1,800 in DVC Maint Fees
600 in Southwest RT airfare for 2 adults
1,500 in Disney GCs for food and spending money for my trip in April
2,000 in Target/Ebay cards to continue churning for my Sept trip.
I expect to have by september
1,500 in Disney GCs for my September trip
1,000+ in Target/Ebay GCs to churn for future trips.
So that is $8,600 for the low cost of $3,780. That is $4,820 in savings or a 127% return on investment in 9 months
The average person doesn't have that money available? I beg to differ. If you're on this thread chances are that you are planning a Disney vacation at some point and you likely do have money at aside for your vacation. If nobody had vacation dollars to spend we wouldn't be here. Not everyone has the entire amount at once but we put in what money we have as we acrue it. I can almost guarentee most of us aren't working with $100,either ,except for those just starting out and getting the feel of things.
But your essentially saying saving $25-$35 per $100 isn't worth your time. Maybe it's not. But don't come into this thread acting like we are wasting or time chasing pennies. Saving 25-35% or more on our trips is a pretty decent savings. Your second post indicated you didn't intend to insult anyone but your message did come off as inflammatory so that's why your getting these 'defensive' responses.
What they said /\
The theory on not getting the eBay #X promotions until you earn $5 in eBucks is an interesting one, but doesn't apply to me. I signed up on or before 2/22/2016 and have earned $41 in eBucks since then, I have yet to see a promotion and I have been checking e mail, spam, and eBay banners every day. I am hoping that once I start spending the eBucks that will trigger something, we will see.
At this point I have a lot of time before I have to get serious about this- our trip isn't until next year and I already have most of what I need for tickets and food- we are renting DVC points so I can't use gift cards for that. Anything extra I save will just be held on to for the next trip
This is most definitely NOT the case. My wife opened a new account 4 weeks ago and has n't used it yet. She got yesterdays 4x offer.
Some TAs will take your GC #s and pay for your reservation for you. That's because they get paid their commission by Disney. However, there are others who won't. I don't use a TA but I'm pretty sure that I know what TA you're talking about. I've seen at least one post that says they will accept GCs but you should go directly to the source and drop them an email.
I made it a point to tell the TA that I was paying with GCs/DVA before we got started. It was in the email communication so that there would be no confusion as to how I intended to pay.
If you do the same, they should let you know that they cannot accept that form of payment up front.
