I understand the Shades of Green for active or retired military, but does WDW do anything for just plain old veterans? I haven't been able to find anything.

WDW has the Military Promotional tickets right now. They are 4 day MYWPH for $138 and they expire Sept. 28, 2011. You can inquire at City Hall, in MK, about about participating in the flag ceremony. Military can purchase tickets through their local MWR/ITT office or SOG to save a little money. Military can also save on resort rates through 10/1/11 (4/17 - 4/20 are blacked out). The discounts rare 30% off Value Resorts, 35% off Moderates (including Fort Wilderness Cabins) and 40% off Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resorts. This offer can be booked as a room only reservation. And if you want, one of the dining plans (Quick Service, regular or Deluxe) can be added, but then that changes your booking to a package and you are then subject to the package rules. Park tickets can't be added to the packages because this offer is tied in with above mentioned military promotional tickets. When you check-in military ID is required or they can then charge you full rack rate.

I totally missed the "plain old veterans" comment until I read CF's comments. My comments are more for the retired or active, sorry.

No. Disney has never had any promotion for veterans who are not retired. It is only for people with a current valid ID card as active or retired.

That said, it is possbile for a veteran (not necessarily a retiree) to particiapate in the 5:00 Flag Lowering ceremony at MK; check at Guest Relations in advance.

with the correct paperwork a VET can stay at SOG in January and September, not sure about the park ticket deals. go to
shades of green website for more information, they are good about responding to questions.

I just found out today that honorably discharged veterans can also get discounted resort reservations through SOG year round. For the time I am going, value resorts are about $139, SOG offered me one for $115!

I still think it's too much when you can get a place right outside for $79, but we may still do it anyway.

I've read and seen a lot of comments to inquire at City Hall about participating in the flag ceremony at MK.

My husband just returned from 6 months in Afghanistan and we thought it'd be neat for him to do the flag and also for our children to see the ceremony with him in it.

However, when we went to City Hall we were told that a random person is chosen by an employee on main street each day. That there was no sign up for this.

Does anyone know otherwise? We'll be going back in Dec 11 - and would like to know if I should try again.
