Disney Fantasy Western Caribbean-March 18-25,2017

Hello all ! My husband and I just did the Magic April 24th sailing and did our first 'place holder', and booked this cruise tonight ! We have done the fish extender several times and enjoyed it each time. We are looking forward to getting to know you all as this cruise approaches ! We will be bringing our daughter age 30, and grand daughter ( First time cruiser) age 8. I will email you, Cmagic with the details, thank you for offering to organize the FE activity !

Casilliman, also let me know how many cabins you prefer. I have 6-7 right
now your preference 10, 15, 20?

Hi! We aren't huge Star Wars fans, although we enjoyed the first three and the latest one quite a bit. I think that it was just a day of Star Wars not the entire cruise? It will be our 5th DCL Carribean cruise. We are about 4-5 moms with children ages 9-12 who all used to go to the same school.

Hello everybody. We just stepped off the Fantasy this morning and have booked this cruise. The kids were heartbroken to leave but are excited to be going in the Spring. We did the fish extender for the first time and we all loved it. The kids were fighting to get to the door each day. We would love to do it again if possible.

We are a family of four:

John (Dad)
Kirsten (Mom)
John Michael 11
Nicholas 9 (will be turning 10 on the ship!)

Thanks in advance, we look forward to seeing you all.

The cruise we just finished had the same stops so we may be able to answer some questions if you all have any.

Hi everyone,

Well after doing the Alaskan cruise on the Wonder, we have been dreaming about another cruise. We have booked this cruise because our daughter (age 10 when we sail) is a big Star Wars fan. DD asked if we are going to be doing the FE again and would love to participate. Figure we have 9 months to get organized for it rather than two months from the trip before.

Steve (Dad)
Christine (Mom)
Hannah 9 (will be 10 by the time we take this trip)

We are looking to see if anyone has done the dolphin cove trek experience in Jamaica. We really want to get off the boat and experience something. I used to scuba dive, but my hubby is not a great swimmer, we have done the trek thing before so it is a good compromise for us. Someone mentioned on here that they just finished the same ports, would love some insight on what is best to do with a 10 year old in the ports. We are a somewhat active family but not too strenuous when it comes to the heat.

Wondering as well if the ruins on Cozumel are any good compared to Tulum or are we better doing Tulum?

Would love your thoughts on Jamaica and what you did at that port, since your Nicholas and our Hannah are in the same age group

Snuff, we actually ended up with poor weather on a couple of our stops, however I'll tell you what I know. In Cozumel we did a beach day at Playa Mia (sp?). The resort was nice. A buffet lunch and open bar is included. They have several pools, a water slide and a splash area. (I think Hannah will be too big for the splash area, it's for little kids). The water at the beach is a little rocky but you can swim out to a floating island of bouncy type stuff. The food was adequate, not fantastic, but good enough. If you don't want the buffet you can order food a la carte for an additional price. The beach is nice and they had plenty of chairs, included with your excursion. We did not do the ruins however we will probably do them on this next cruise. We are torn between going to the mainland or just seeing what's on the island. I believe there is an excursion that combines the local ruins with the beach day, we may do that.

Grand Cayman was a bust for us, thunderstorms over the beach. We were given the option to cancel our excursion once we got off the boat and we were one of the few families to do so. Speaking with some others that chose not to, it seems we made the right choice. That being said, we were planning a beach day on seven mile beach. Other options are a dolphin swim and a stingray adventure. A family on the dolphin swim said it was great, until they got stuck out in the storm. A note about Grand Cayman, it is a tender to the dock and you will need extra time to get there. Disney will give you instructions that say plan on thirty minutes, we planned forty five, and almost missed our excursion time. Plan on at least an hour.

As far as Jamaica goes, we had not planned anything, we always try to plan on one port day on the boat to allow the kids better access to the things that are usually crowded and Jamaica was that day for us. I have been there before and might recommend Dunns River Falls if you are adventurous enough. Look it up on the Internet, and if you think you might want to do it invest in a waterproof camera and some water shoes. The port at Jamaica is beautiful and fairly new, however it is similar to any Caribbean port. Falmouth is quite a distance from most things you will want to see and the excursions are quite pricey. Plan on an hour drive to wherever you want to go.

On past cruises we did not do planned excursions choosing to go out on our own instead. In these ports that may not be the best idea with the exception perhaps of Grand Cayman. I would use the Disney excursions again given the choice. Our money was refunded within one day on the Grand Cayman trip. I doubt we would have had that option if we did an independent excursion. Parts of Jamaica can be sketchy so it would be best to be with an organized group.

The last day is on Castaway Cay, which we consider to be the best part of our cruise always. This was our fifth cruise and the CC day is like coming to our home away from home. Tube and raft rentals are available and a good idea. The water is clean, warm and beautiful. Plan to spend most of your day off the boat. We rented bicycles for the first time and really enjoyed it. The island is not very big so you can explore it by bike in an hour or so. It is not a strenuous ride at all. If you are into running, you might want to sign up for the 5k. More of a fun run (or walk for many), but a nice way to see the island as well. Lunch is served on the island and drinks are available as well.

I hope this was somewhat helpful. We look forward to seeing you all on the ship.

Joining in! :wave2:

We moved our original booking from a 3 day in February to this cruise. I'm so excited to go on a longer cruise and see a new ship!

I'm hoping to get ideas for excursions and Star Wars costumes.

That was very helpful thank you. We have been to Cozumel before but our daughter has not, we stayed at I think it was Xel-Ha which is very nice and we have gone to the ruins at Tulum which we learned a lot from. We are torn though between the one on the island or going to Tulum. We enjoyed the ferry ride where we got to see flying fish for the first time. Xcaret we had an absolute blast at before and a very relaxing day, though I don't know if we would get to see all of the exciting things they have in the evening.

Grand Cayman is a bit of a mystery for us at the moment but the submarine down to the reefs looks interesting, not sure about Georgetown and if it makes sense to explore it.

We are thinking of the dolphin Trek in Jamaica but not too crazy about climbing the falls so may have to see if there is something else at dolphin cove we can do there.

Looks like Castaway Cay we may be doing the 5k as Steve does 6 every other day here with our dog and I know my daughter and I can handle it if we do a run/walk. I am really interested in getting out there to fly fish though, been a dream of mine for a while and Steve wants to get out on the jetskis. Hannah wants to try the snorkelling I think as well since she is quite a fish at times.

I have been putting together a price matrix in excel for all the excursions and then we are going to decide what we do where based on it's uniqueness and pricing but so far those are our first thoughts. Figuring out what to do I think is half of the fun to this.

Anyone have any good ideas for easy pirate costumes? I'm pretty crafty with some direction ;) Ironically, the SW ones are easier for me to replicate LOL..but our son Adyn (will be 9 on the cruise) said mommy and daddy weren't pirate enough last time...I don't think we realized how much fun it would be for the whole family!! Easily becoming an addict!!

Woo hoo! I was starting to think I was going to be the only one here! Great to hear you have teens-my daughter will have just turned 16. And I just found out today that sailing WILL include a Star Wars Day at sea!

Just booked our family for our first Disney Cruise and we are super excited. I want to join a FE group and hope to find others with teens. We have 2 boys, 13 & 17 at sailing. Glad to see other teen parents too!

Still learning...anyone know how many families are signed up for the FE group? Someone also mentioned a facebook group?just want to make sure we aren't missing anything my son is so excited he's trying to recruit his friends and their families to come on the cruise.

Also...there has been some mention of excusion types from those that have been on this cruise before...anything we should keep our eye out for with a 9 year old?

Thanks!!

FYI, someone should be along shortly to scold you for mentioning FB. They will, invariably, quote the rules. Anyway, FB has many users and groups. If you want to search for a group, I'd suggest looking for Disney cruise meet groups.
Oops...me learning...not meaning to break any rules. My bad! *bowing my head down*

My daughter made a sock parrot that we will be bringing with us on this trip. I would suggest some simplicity patterns if you are game for making a female pirate costume. I made one years ago with an elastic waste for the skirt to it so I can wear it like my fat pants if I need to in red with white pockadots along with a basic white shirt again gathered at the arms and neck with elastic that can be worn off the shoulder if you wish, put some mickey mouse ears on if you wish one night and then some gaudy large jewelry with a red or black bandana another night and away you go!!

Hi Everyone,
We are just looking into this cruise. It would be myself and 2-3 teenagers. We just got back from a short cruise and loved the FE (first time doing the FE for us) and would definitely want to join in again!!
