Disney Employee Accused of Stealing Credit Card Numbers

A Disney Vacation Club Castmember is being accused of using a stolen credit card to purchase a bicycle. When he was arrested he had guest information written on pieces of paper.

Doesn't really surprise me. Luckily it is getting more difficult to use these numbers anymore because of the heightened security.
I had that happen at Applebee's almost 7 years ago. The guy charged over $700 in Nascar collectibles. He had it sent to his house. (dumb) When they raided the house they had a binder with over 150 credit card numbers.
I got all my money back but it was stressful. I caught it before the actual charges even posted (they were pending) but it was still to late to stop the charge. Still, by catching it so soon, I got my money back faster. I still check my bank account every day. This was my debit/credit card, so it came out of my bank account.

Unfortunately, it may have been one of mine he had. After getting my credit card over the phone to a Disney castmember, my card showed up with other suspicious charges. We caught it right away thankfully. It's kind of hard to have to give the number over the phone, but it's just the way it is.

It's interesting because on my last trip to WDW my card was being used illegally in a Macon, GA Walmart. Other than Orlando, the ATL airport was the closest that card ever came to Georgia. I wouldn't say that it was lifted by an employee of Disney, I only used it for the reservation and one purchase in the parks during my whole trip. The biggest dillema was when I wanted to get groceries and realized that after canceling the card I didn't have my new one yet.

I think is important to know that if this happens to you, you are protected from loosing the money that was stolen on a credit or debit card. If you recieve a statement with charges you did not make, contact the card issuer or bank right away.

You may also recieve a call from the bank or a third company that monitors bank card transactions. They will only need to confirm if you did or did not make the transactions. They will not need whole account or social security numbers. They can confirm who you are in these cases with just the last 4 or 5 digits and your name a zip code.


Also if you are making a irregular large purchase of one out of your area or travelling out of your normal area you may want to let the issuer know so they don't block transactions being made by you.

That could easily have been us not once but twice.
We went to Disney in September 2009 and when we got back, my CC bill had about 10 charges totally $300+ ocurring every day or every other day. I cancelled the card and got a new number. The charges started about day 5 of our trip and went into the next billing cycle by the time I found it.
We went again in February and it hapened again, this time starting midway into the week but only about 5 times totalling about $100. Again we cancelled the card and got a new number.
I was very suspicious that they both happened after we had been in the World a few days. We do not leave our wallets out where the maid could find them and had no idea how it happened twice in less than a year.
Now I really wonder what is going on !!!

Did you use the card at a restaurant, gas station, or grocery store in the area? Any of those locations could easily have been the culprit aswell, even the ones where you scan your own card. Card skimming is easy and pretty much undetectable in those self service locations. Not saying it couldn;t have been Disney, but that there may have been other possibilities.

This is one reason I use online check-in, the card number goes into the system, and the resort people don't see the whole number, only a few digits.

However, I was just at the World April 17-23 and stayed at Pop Century. My credit card was used at our resort hotel as a deposit and at the Disney owned outlet store (Character Premier--something like that). We used our KTTW to charge anything we wanted, and I had the card in my physical possession at all times.

I only use the card for Disney vacations, it is the Disney Visa. I don't even carry it the rest of the time, I use my American Express for nearly everything, and this trip I paid cash for most things, didn't even use the Am Ex. When I got home I had a call from the fraud department at Chase. I called them and they advised that someone had used the card for I-tunes and a website called blizzard, which we googled and is a gaming/dungeons & dragons kind of thing. I did waste the time to ask my husband if he charged those items, but as I suspected he did not. The charges totaled less than $50, but clearly Chase knew this was a problem. They cancelled my number and I am still waiting for the reissued card. I was impressed with how quickly the caught the items--they never hit my statement and were in a pending status.

The only other place I "used" my card was at the Disney Visa free photo thing in Epcot--clearly someone wrote down the number.

I don't know who took the number, but sometimes people suck! I can only guess there is any unhappy cast member who now has an extra song and video game--I used to work in banking fraud, and if Chase can get the vendors to comply they can trace the buyer. Especially for copyrighted digital content--I don't know if they will bother for the dollar amount.

I was going to write a letter to Disney to let them know, but clearly this problem not new.

You don't really need to look. I'll tell you this took place in 2008 and the man arrested used the card for auto repairs.

It is NOT logical or fair to assume that the only place someone can get your card number is when/where you use the card. There have been many news articles over the years of thousands of card numbers stolen by computer hackers, lost bank tapes, etc.

That is so strange. I had somebody hijack my credit card and they used it and blizzard and itunes also but never used card at Disney.

I know, and it says FOX 35 in Orlando....

But the FOX 35 site says nothing of the matter.

We had not gone offsite. Both times we drove down andgot gas and food along the way, but they were not at the same places both times.

I tunes was what my card was used for both times as others have experienced here also. I thought it was too odd to be a coincidence that both times someone used my card I was at Disney, but if it has happened to others too, I doubt it is a coincidence but someone onsite getting our numbers.

If your card info gets stolen you won't know where it happened. Who's to say when it happened. I've heard of cases where people put a camera over an ATM. After a month they collected their film from the ATM area. They then made cards and put the data from the film on each card. Then they distributed the fake cards all over russian cities and had dozens of people going to ATM's to withdraw money from the accounts of users who still had their own card in their hand.

You would only be able to tell where the data was taken if you used the card once.
