Disney Dreaming: A September 2014 PTR

Happy belated Fourth of July! And to my Canadian readers, a very happy bleated Canada Day! I hope everyone celebrated in style, and took long weekends where appropriate

Just popping back in to say that I haven't forgotten or given up on this PTR, I've just been really busy lately...

June and July are like birthday-palooza months in my family, so there has been a lot of birthday celebrations going on in the past month, and it will continue pretty much into the last week of the month. Yay birthdays!

So, because of all of the celebrations, combined with errands, events around the city, and friends, I've not really been able to get on the DIS much, as you can tell. In fact, I've barely been on my computer in the past 3 weeks, which is pretty crazy for me . I'll probably end up away from the DIS for a little while because this weekend I'm going away to my Aunt's cottage on the South Shore of the province, and we have friends visiting from Newfoundland next week, then during the end of the following week our city's Gay Pride festival starts up, then it's my parent's birthdays (two days apart), and then it's a long weekend and we're going away camping. So, as you can see, I am going to have a busy summer, BUT I will come on here and make some proper updates, rather than just saying "please don't go away, I'm still here!" whenever I can. They may just be lacking pictures for a bit

In Disney related news, I found out there's a GTKTW (give the kids the world) fundraiser going on here in August, and I'm really hoping to wrangle my parents and cousins into going too. They will be taping a potcast here as well, which I think is pretty neat, and it sounds like people will be coming in from FL, which is also cool

It's going to have an auction of some kind, don't really remember if it's a silent auction or penny auction, but one of the two I think. There will be lots of stuff for kids to do, music, prizes, and they'll be doing a recording for the podcast, which is kind of neat too. They're also having a pirate cruise one night, and going for a small day trip too! I've been trying to get my parents interested in it, and I know my mom is, but it may just be me and her.

Well, technically Wednesday was the day...

The day when we could book 2014 vacation packages!

I'm a little excited.

Anyway, here are a few scenarios that I went over with my parents yesterday, so hopefully we'll have something booked very soon! Hoping for a little so that my dad will agree to drop the November plans for this year in favor for switching the deposit to next year’s reservation.

These are the givens:

Dates: September 20th - October 4th 2014
Dining Plan: Free Dining (I know it won't be announced until this time next year if this happens, BUT, historically speaking those dates have fallen within the dates for FD in the past 3 years, including this year, so I'm really banking on it to come out for these dates next year, otherwise we may have to switch our dates a bit. I know I’m living on the edge a bit, expecting to get this, but I would be completely shocked if it’s not offered for these dates)
Park Tickets: 10-Day, Park Hopper

Scenario 1 (aka, best possible outcome)



In a perfect world, we would be staying at the Coronado Springs Resort. I love the decor and I also really like its location relative to the parks, with the farthest away being a mere 10 min bus ride. Wasn't a huge fan of the food court, but it's changed since we were there in 2011. I even really like the gift shop and the resort's size doesn't phase me in the slightest. This resort is the next best thing to staying at a deluxe resort, in my opinion. There would be 4 of us per room, which would ring in at $5,901.96 total. That means $1,475.49 per person. A touch more than I was hoping, but it could be doable...after all, it is still a ways off. That price is also for a “standard business class room” which was the cheapest option it would allow me to choose, for some reason. That would give us access to the new business lounge though, which sounds a bit like a club level lounge in the deluxe resorts. For the extra $200 it may well be worth it…otherwise, we’ll just have to call and see if we can get a regular room.

Scenario 2



If the CSR is a tad too much for us, my second resort choice would be at the Port Orleans French Quarter. I really enjoyed our stay there (back in 2007) and wouldn't mind staying there again, but it's not necessarily my first resort choice. (sharing the bus sucks just a bit, and I found the giant masks in the food court to be creepy) It would ring in at $5,114.60 for the total package, which equates to $1,278.65 per person. Not bad. That's more of what I was hoping for.

Scenario 3



I've now stayed here twice, and while it's certainly not my first resort pick, it's still a strong contender. As busy as the food court is, I like it for its selection and the overall location of the resort relative to the parks isn't bad. We've also had good luck with the buses here, and if we had to get an AoA bus back to that resort and walk, it's not too bad. This is our most economical option, weighing in at just $4,043.32 total, making it $1,010.83 per person. It may be a touch cramped with 4 people though, but I’m sure we could manage. The real question, though, is, is the Coronado worth an extra $470?

Scenario 4



Yes, that’s right. I’ve even checked the pricing for an AoA suite. It looks like an awesome resort, which we briefly toured last year. The suites can hold upto 6, and have 2 bathrooms, but I’m not sure if all the beds could hold the weight of 2 adults (I have a feeling one of them is made for children, and therefore may have a weight restriction), and the beds are only doubles. Much like the previous option, for it to be the most economical, we would need to have max occupancy. The total price is $7,160.10, but with 6 people it’s only $1,193.35 per person. Totally doable. I’m just not sure that 6 adults in one of the suites is a good idea, because I feel like they’re meant for families that have upto 4 children, not 6 adults. So, with just 4 in a room it would be $6,309, which then makes it $1,577.25 a person. With this option we would also have to upgrade to the DDP rather than having the QSDP, which would also add to the cost, probably making it not worth it at all, but it could be a viable option because of the 2 full bathrooms. How worth it is it to have 2 bathrooms?

I also checked the prices for villas and DVC rentals, but both wouldn’t be as economical as these options here. I have a feeling we’ll end up with the Coronado. My parents both love that resort and really want to get back. To them, it may well be worth the extra money, especially with the business lounge, but even if we don’t choose that option, it would likely be the same price as the French Quarter for a standard room.

I also just found out the dates of the Epcot Food and Wine Festival for this year, and according to those dates, in 2014 it would start on September 26th, meaning we would get to enjoy the Food and Wine Festival for almost a week! My dad was pretty excited about the prospect of that, but I wasn’t able to check the dates until after I left, so I’ll have to let him know, so hopefully that will be more enticement to save up more money for next year!

Anyway, that’s all for now. Hopefully the next time I come back I’ll be able to say we’ve got something booked!

I like your options. I agree with Sarah, the second bathroom would be a big draw for AoA, but I hope that whatever you get to choose works out best for everyone!

Why is it that whenever I go to post something to the DIS I get interrupted somehow? No matter, I've got all morning now!

I was doing some more "Disney Math" yesterday to come up with more tangible totals, totals that would reflect the entire cost of the trip, minus extras like spending money and stuff for tips and extra snacks, and of course, the cost of airfare. I can't even look to see what options are available for flights until at least September, so there's really no point.

Anyway, the prices range from $2,061.25 per person, as the most expensive, to $1,401.83 per person at the other end of the spectrum. The most expensive option is staying at AoA, and the least expensive option is at the POP. Those totals reflect a 2-day 2-park Universal ticket (with or without express pass, I priced them both), a Mears shuttle to and from Universal for 2 days, a Sea World ticket and public transportation to get to Sea World from Disney. All in all, not too bad for a 2 week vacation.

In other news, I was able to visit with my cousins last weekend, and they all seemed to be on-board with my "Disney September 2014" trip They have tentatively priced out a trip for December of this year, which they are not 100% sure they'll be able to do, but they really want to see the Christmas decorations, having never gone for that time of year. So, we'll see...they're going to try to do both, so I'll keep my fingers crossed

My parents still have their November trip booked, but I'm not sure for how much longer. I'll keep you posted on that. I'm not sure how up for it my brother is, but we're continuing to work on him, and I haven't seen Kurt in a while to see if he's still considering it. It looks as though it may just be the 4 of us after all, but you never know.

Okay, so maybe I inadvertently went away without planning or meaning to. I'm sorry, I'm a bad DISser!

So let me fill you in on the happenings of the last, oh, 2 months. Yeah, I said 2 months.

So when I last left off, it was the end of July. It was hot. REALLY HOT. It stayed that way for pretty much the rest of the summer, and we're actually still getting some unseasonably warm days even now.

In the beginning of August a good friend of mine (and ex-co-worker) was mentioning some drama that was going on at her work, which is where I used to work until 2 years go. They had been having issues trying to find good, reliable workers ever since I left, and one of the part-timers they had hired back in May decided she was bored working there, stirred up said drama and then promptly quit 2 hours before her shift one day . Being a small business, this left them up the creek, so to speak, in terms of staffing. There were vacations coming up and they had no one to cover them, and were looking at having to close the store for a few days because of this, so I offered to help them out for a brief time on the weekends until they were able to get someone new. So, my month of August consisted of working a lot. I worked 18 days in a row, had one weekend off, and then worked one weekend day for a little while. I've since stopped working there on the weekends, but I'm still there if they need me for the occasional shift.

In the beginning of September some friends of ours bought their first houses, which prompted us to look into the possibility of doing the same. We met with a mortgage specialist, and even took a look at a place, but after meeting with my aunt and talking it over, we've decided to wait for another 6 months before really looking.

So, aside from the working and the stress of doing really grown-up stuff, my summer was great. I didn't get out too much, for obvious reasons, and I also wasn't online much either...I would come home, eat, and veg on YouTube or play Animal Crossing or something equally mind-numbing. Now the craziness seems to be abating, here I am. Hopefully back for a while this time. To make up for lost time I will promptly make a few more updates on "Disney, September 2014", and my old TR.

Day 1 - Part 1
Monday October 29, 2012.

Mood Music

So what’s the best way to start the day? By waking up in Disney World, of course!

And we did!!!

By the time we woke up this morning we should have been making our way to New York, but we were already in Disney! It was a wonderful feeling, let me tell you.

Elated just to be in Disney World, we didn’t care what time it was when we woke up, or what we did, really. This was a bonus day for us, and we didn’t have a park ticket to use for this day anyway, so we decided that we would take the day at a slow pace and just explore some resorts, and maybe head to DTD at some point. I was still sick, so this relaxing day was just what the doctor ordered.

Taking our time to get ready for the day, we ended up at Everything POP for breakfast in the late morning. I had a hankering for some waffles, so while I made a B line to the waffle line-up, Heather wondered around for a bit trying to decide what she wanted, before eventually getting in line behind me for some waffles. Of course, I had to get mine with “fruit” topping, aka, strawberries and whipped cream, while she chose to go with sausage and bacon.

So after having our fill of a delightfully satisfying breakfast and browsing the shops a little bit, we set off on our “bonus” Disney day.









Now, I feel it pertinent to mention how chilly it was. At the end of October we were expecting cooler weather than what we were used to in Orlando, but this was downright chilly. It was almost as cool as it was back home. We each only packed one pair of jeans, the ones we wore down yesterday, and one sweater. You’ll notice us wearing them a lot throughout our photos.

The path from POP to AoA is really nice, and I highly recommend checking it out if you have the chance. It was less than 10 minutes for us to get from Animation Hall at AoA back to our room at POP using the path, which was great!







As we were approaching the part of the path that nears the bridge to AoA, I heard this screeching sound overhead. *Interjection: Heather is an avid bird watcher, and by osmosis, I’m starting to enjoy it too. There are birds we both have on our imaginary list that we’d love to see one day, but we don’t get some of them where we live because its too cold. Back to our regularly scheduled TR:* I knew it was definitely a bird of prey of some kind, and that it sounded really familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it. Heather, stopped right in her tracks. She knew the sound, but couldn’t place it. A few more steps and then we heard it again, but this time much louder. Then we saw it. A red-tailed hawk. I knew what it was when I heard it call the second time. It was literally right overhead when it zoomed past us. Then I heard another more distant call, and we saw them. There must have been about 5-8 red-tailed hawks flying overhead. These are birds we don’t get back at home, so for us it was a bit of a big deal to see them.



So, after we composed ourselves, we continued on our way. We didn’t get far when we saw a girl and her mom leaning over the railing of the bridge looking into the lake. Naturally we went over to see what they were looking at, and we saw this little guy…



Well, it wasn’t really that small to be honest. I thought it was really cute at first, a “little” turtle, but then I saw it surface and thought something was caught on its nose. I was wrong though, what I was seeing was actually the turtle’s nose. I’m sorry to anyone who thinks these guys are cute, but eew. This turtle had a snout-like nose, it was really weird. Here’s a picture where you can see it better



So after being a bit weirded out by this guy we were about to continue on our way when Heather spotted lots of large black birds over the Little Mermaid section of AoA. After taking some zoomed in photos we were able to tell that they were black vultures. Heather was really excited, getting to see two exotic birds within about 10 minutes of one another. I thought it was pretty cool too. But, now it was time to “keep on swimming”, as Dory would say.

Where would we swim to, but right into the Finding Nemo section of AoA! It was really neat! My overall impression of the resort was that they did a fantastic job with it. I can see it being a new favourite for families, easily. The themeing is awesome, the food court is awesome and looks like it has some great choices, and the buses looked to be pretty good too.











Once we were finished checking out AoA, we decided to head to Downtown Disney to check out the shops for a bit.

The bus for Downtown Disney had just pulled up as we were walking out of Animation Hall, so we had to hustle a little bit, but we got the bus no problem. This was a sign of things to come, bus wise.

The ride wasn’t too bad, and soon we were at the Downtown Disney Marketplace. The first place we went into was the Art of Disney. Let it be known that I LOVE that store. It’s probably one of my favourite shops in all of Disney. If I had money, and space, I wouldn’t ever be allowed in there well, I don’t really have much money now, but we do have a bit of wall space to spare, so it’s still a dangerous place. I think we spent close to an hour in there all said and done. I ended up buying a pint of a painting of the Haunted Mansion. It’s kinda creepy looking, but it’s not obviously Disney, so I was able to get away with it.

After the Art of Disney we went to Goofy’s Candy Co. It was the first time I’d been in there, and my inner candy-loving kid came out seconds after stepping foot in there. I’d seen that you can create your own treats, and while I wanted to do that, there was a cake pop with my name on it. Heather saw a rice krispy treat she wanted, so we got in line. Both were fabulous.

We sat and enjoyed our treats, people-watching on a planter. It’s nice to slow down in Disney.







I think we ended up going into the kitchen store that’s attached to the Earl of Sandwich after we had our treats. Even that store has tons of stuff we wanted, especially the spices. It was hard leaving everything behind, but at this point it was around 3pm and we wanted to get to the Animal Kingdom Lodge before our dinner reservation at 8:05. I know that sounds like we had plenty of time, but Heather can spend hours at the Animal Kingdom Lodge taking photos of the animals on the viewing areas. Literally, hours. So, I wanted us to have plenty of time there, so that we wouldn’t feel rushed.

When we got back to the bus depot, we only had to wait about 4 minutes before the bus came. It was a fairly long bus ride, but we didn’t care that much…we were on vacation!

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS POST…

Mood Music

We decided to get off at Jambo House, since we didn’t get to see the viewing areas there last year. After a quick pit stop, we were watching an ostrich peck at pebbles on the savannah. Apparently they actually eat pebbles to help them digest their food, but they have to be a very specific size. The things you learn from your wife.

















At this point I started feeling off. I felt a migraine coming on when were in Downtown Disney, so I took one of my magic migraine-be-gone pills. It was helping but not as much as it normally does, but I was working through it. Unfortunately, I got worse really fast. I started getting cold sweats, my head was pounding, and I started to feel nauseous. I knew it wasn’t going to be a good scene if I stayed much longer, so at this point I mentioned to Heather that I wasn’t feeling well and would have to go back to the room for a quick nap before dinner. I was fine with her staying and taking as many pictures as she wanted, but she didn’t want to leave me to take the bus back to the POP on my own, knowing that I’d have to go to a park or back to DTD before getting on a bus back. At this point we headed back inside the lodge to figure out our plan of action. I was feeling really bad now, to the point where I thought I might pass out, so we sat on the couches for a bit, and I started feeling marginally better. I knew I wasn’t going to make it back on a bus, and that we’d have to cab. Heather was fine with this, so we said our brief good-bye’s to the Animal Kingdom Lodge and got a cab back to the POP. It was about $15, in case anyone needs to do that sometime.

Back at the POP, I laid down for a bit while Heather went around exploring and taking more photos. I didn’t think I’d actually fallen asleep, but when I woke up Heather was in the room and I didn’t remember her coming back, so I must have had a little bit of a snooze. When I got up I felt much better. I’m still not quite sure if it was the migraine or if it was because I was dehydrated, but it was the only bad spell I had the whole trip, which was good. For some reason I think that flying does funny things to the pressure in my head and I get migraines the day after I fly somewhere. It doesn’t seem to be as bad coming home though.

We left for the Magic Kingdom shortly after I woke up, because it was around 6:00 and I wanted us to get to the Polynesian early so we could look around. It didn’t take long for a Magic Kingdom bus to show up, and shortly we were on our way!

We got off the bus and made our way over to the resort monorail, and when we got closer we saw there was a monorail waiting there, so we ran to make it, and we did! I don’t remember seeing the Magic Kingdom close up at all, and I think it’s because we were running to get the monorail.

By the time we got to the Polynesian it was about 7:00. We ended up walking to the beach and sitting on a swing for a little bit, just soaking up the atmosphere. It was awesome. We sat there for maybe 15 minutes, and then decided to take a look in the shops.





We ended up checking in about 15 minutes early, but we didn’t get seated until about 10 minutes after our scheduled reservation time. We were both starving at this point, and were very much looking forward to the feast we were about to have.

Our server got us our bread on the way to our table, and explained about the bread. I was so excited for this bread! I was caught up thinking about the bread that when we got to our table it took me a minute to take in the sight before me. We had an almost perfect view of Cinderella’s Castle. This was going to be a good trip.

Everything about this meal was amazing, and I kept saying to Heather how thankful I was that we were there, because we almost weren’t. I would have missed that meal so much had we not been able to make it. I had a bit of a moment, sitting there in ‘Ohana, eating my face off, looking at the castle, and thinking about everything that had happened in the past two days. It was incredible. And then Wishes started. And I started crying. I really did have a moment,

So, bellies stuffed, we made our way back to the Magic Kingdom, where we waved briefly to the castle before heading over to get our bus back to the POP.

It had been a good day, despite my little bout of illness. We were in Disney World. We were married. We had just stuffed ourselves silly with fantastic food, while watching the best fireworks around. Life was good. (IS good).

DH and I just started learning more about birds. I don't know that I'd call us bird watchers, and certainly not avid, but we have some birdwatching apps on our phones so we might be in the beginning stages. Seeing those red-tailed hawks would be pretty amazing!
I'm so in love with AoA, what an amazing job they did!
I am also dangerous in the Art of Disney store. The stuff there is just so incredible!

One year ago I said “I do” to the love of my life, and I would say it a thousand times over today. In honor of our one-year anniversary I thought I should pop on here and post the wedding update that I’ve been threatening to post.

I also want to mention that I’m still clinging on to the hope of “Disney, September 2014” despite that nothing is booked yet. I promise you I haven’t abandoned the DIS, it’s just that the time I get to use my computer is usually allocated to checking e-mail and facebook, and I always get side-tracked away from the DIS. I’m not being monitored on my computer usage or anything, I just have errands to run or people to visit, or things to clean, so that when I’m done all of that I like to take the time to play my new Pokemon 3DS game (which Heather bought for me, bless her) or hang out with my wife.

I got back from my cruise vacation 2 weeks ago (tomorrow), and we had an awesome time. The only thing that would have made it better (other than Disney, of course) would have been my wife…she wasn’t able to switch her vacation time, so she wasn’t there with us, and I missed her lots! Well, we all did.
