Disney Dollars - Still Available?

We wanted to get Disney Dollars for my SIL's Christmas present. Since Disney sold The Disney Store, it looks like their "dollars" are only good at the store. Can you still get Disney Dollars to use at the Parks or on the Cruise ship?

Even though The Disney Stores are now officially owned by The Children's Place (Hoop Retail) they will continue to sell Disney merchandise and yes, they will still be selling Disney Dollars. So, just as before you can use them in the Disney Stores, the Parks, or the cruise just like cash.

DH called the Disney store in our area to ask if they would still be selling park hoppers and Disney dollars since they had gotten bought by another company, and the girl on the phone didn't seem to know anything about it.
She said they still sold them though...

I thought Disney discontinued Disney dollars. That's what we were told when we were in Disneyland a couple years ago. We were also told they would honor those already out there. Never though to take the few I have left on the cruise since the cruise is a cashless set up.

I've been buying Disney Dollars here and there for our May 2005 cruise to put down as credit on our account. Never knew the stores were sold

When I go to the mall I go to the Disney store and buy disney dollars. I dont get there often but have bought $240 so far. Plan to visit the mall alot for Christmas shopping and hope to get many more.

The stores were officially sold on Nov 21st, 2004. If someone answered the phone and did not know that the stores were sold then they were a new employee, probably holiday help....as nothing has really changed in the stores except the worker now work for The Children's Place, not Disney. They will continue to sell Disney Dollars and park passes.

Anyone who has been with the TDS for any length of time would know of this sale as it was a huge deal (personal and financial) and was talked about for months and months. I worked for TDS for 15 years and let me tell you it was sad to see the stores change hands.

Since we booked our cruise, we have been asking for Disney Dollars for all gift-giving holidays. We have amassed over $1500 in Disney Dollars.

Disney Dollars are my all time favorite gift! We asked for them on our wedding registry, and I always put them on my gift lists.....it helps "save" for our trips (lord knows if it were cash it would be gone in a second!) My mom uses them for DH and I as stocking stuffers, Easter basket gifts in the plastic eggs...they are always a great gift! We have used them to pay off our ship board account, pay for everything from alcoholic beverages to sweatshirts at WDW or DL!

Unfortunately, they closed our Disney store 2 years ago (replaced by yet another teeny bopper clothing store!) so our closest store is about an hour away...but as long as they keep selling them, we'll still use them.

Jill - I LOVE the idea of using them in the plastic eggs. We go on our cruise May 7th and that would be a great gift for my kids for Easter. Thanks for the idea!

I'm confused. I remember another thread where someone said you couldn't use Disney Dollars on the cruise because of their cashless system. Or is it that you can only use them to pay off your on-board account? You can't give them to your DD or DS to buy things from the giftshop or get an arcade card or something like that, right?

You are correct....they cannot be used to purchase items at bars, shops, etc. but can definately be used to pay off your shipboard account!!!

Yes...you can use them to play bingo, order drinks, pay tips, pay excursions, just cannot use them in the gift shops. You can put them on your account once you board the ship as if you were giving them cash which is what I did last time (gave them cash and then the credit card for anything over the cash). Great way to save for vacation!!

Thanks everyone. It just looks like I cannot purchase them on line. Guess well have to make a trip downtown to the Disney Store. Oh well...another excuse to hit the mall!
