A rant about a camera.
I'm frustrated.
How on earth does anyone choose a camera? There are so many brands, options, price points, MPs, quality, features, etc. How do I know if I need 3D panoramic abilities (Ok...I know I don't need that). But seriously? As soon as I think I've figured out which camera I'd like to buy, I look at the price point and think, "Could I get more, for less?"
But I shall admit, much of my frustration comes from the fact that I have dropped three cameras in the past year.
Camera One - Sony Cybershot (nice little point and shoot from Christmas 2005) - One sadly departed on our last night in WDW on the TTA. I handed it to DH, and let go to fast. Oh well...it still works. But I also left the charger in the room. Whoops. So while the camera still "works" (its temperamental, and a good six years old now...), I can't risk it being my only source of picture taking on our trip.
Camera Two - My sister had recently, though some events, come into possession of a really really nice Nikon (point and shoot) camera. However, with her limited caring of photography skills, she was ready to buy an "easier camera" and sell me this one. I gladly accepted and eagerly starting using it for everything and anything. It went with me everywhere. However, the picture quality was awful. It was 14 MP, unlike the 6 MP of the Sony. I think it was defected.
I paid less than retail of over $300, but still a quite a bit of $$. Anyway - one night while DH was outside, and I was tired and getting ready for bed, I was moving stuff around and cleaning up for the next morning. I grabbed my cell phone, camera, and some other items out of my purse to put on the counter, 2 feet away from the table the purse was on. I realized something was slipping, and thought I was letting go of something else. I picked up the camera and it turned on "lens error". That's the thing they don't tell you about those nicer cameras with the 10x zoom lens. One little bump, and you've got yourself a $100 service fee to get it fixed. Oh vey. Read online later that that particular camera and others like it (similar features/specs) are known for being broken by the tiniest bump in the purse or pocket. Glad I never took it to Disney, it wouldn't have survived one day!
Camera Three - (Kodak EasyShare) The same year I was gifted the lovely Sony camera, DH (bf at the time) found a great deal on a camera while he was home for the holidays with his family. Its bulky, its not that great of picture, and it uses batteries. But nonetheless, was my last resort for pictures over the holidays and for our DLR trip in Jan. Then two weeks later I went to the annual winter camp with my youth group girls. Since we had decided that this camera was in for the long haul at this point (it actually got dropped from my hands onto pavement in DLR....
), I put it in the cell phone pocket of my travel bag. Well, on the way home I went to take a picture of something on the bus, and the screen was completely and totally cracked. It still works, just fine actually. Picture quality, flash, zoom, all the same. Oh, but you have no idea what you're shooting at.
Camera Four -
No idea. DH wants me to get a camera that can be dropped. Which I understand, I mean seriously, see above
...I'm a clumsy mess sometimes. But we also doesn't want to spend that much, seeing as my last year with cameras has been so awful. Olympus carries a line of cameras that are waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, dustproof and crushproof. Basically, they're made for people to take snowboarding, kayaking, camping, snorkling...but I'm taking it to Disney. They range from $130-$450 (they have six, three came out last year, three this year).
Can someone just pick out a camera for me, tell me that the price I'm paying is absolutely the best deal I'll ever find, order it for me and just be done with it?
Oh vey...how do I make any decisions?
Ok...thanks for reading, (if you did!), I appreciate it. But either way, I am curious to know, I can't be the only one who has ever dropped, cracked, scratched, broke a camera before, right? What cameras do you all use?
