Disney Dollars, Deals, and Delights - A PTR - Update 5/9 - We're Here! - GKTW update

A rant about a camera.

I'm frustrated. :headache:

How on earth does anyone choose a camera? There are so many brands, options, price points, MPs, quality, features, etc. How do I know if I need 3D panoramic abilities (Ok...I know I don't need that). But seriously? As soon as I think I've figured out which camera I'd like to buy, I look at the price point and think, "Could I get more, for less?"

But I shall admit, much of my frustration comes from the fact that I have dropped three cameras in the past year.

Camera One - Sony Cybershot (nice little point and shoot from Christmas 2005) - One sadly departed on our last night in WDW on the TTA. I handed it to DH, and let go to fast. Oh well...it still works. But I also left the charger in the room. Whoops. So while the camera still "works" (its temperamental, and a good six years old now...), I can't risk it being my only source of picture taking on our trip.

Camera Two - My sister had recently, though some events, come into possession of a really really nice Nikon (point and shoot) camera. However, with her limited caring of photography skills, she was ready to buy an "easier camera" and sell me this one. I gladly accepted and eagerly starting using it for everything and anything. It went with me everywhere. However, the picture quality was awful. It was 14 MP, unlike the 6 MP of the Sony. I think it was defected. I paid less than retail of over $300, but still a quite a bit of $$. Anyway - one night while DH was outside, and I was tired and getting ready for bed, I was moving stuff around and cleaning up for the next morning. I grabbed my cell phone, camera, and some other items out of my purse to put on the counter, 2 feet away from the table the purse was on. I realized something was slipping, and thought I was letting go of something else. I picked up the camera and it turned on "lens error". That's the thing they don't tell you about those nicer cameras with the 10x zoom lens. One little bump, and you've got yourself a $100 service fee to get it fixed. Oh vey. Read online later that that particular camera and others like it (similar features/specs) are known for being broken by the tiniest bump in the purse or pocket. Glad I never took it to Disney, it wouldn't have survived one day!

Camera Three - (Kodak EasyShare) The same year I was gifted the lovely Sony camera, DH (bf at the time) found a great deal on a camera while he was home for the holidays with his family. Its bulky, its not that great of picture, and it uses batteries. But nonetheless, was my last resort for pictures over the holidays and for our DLR trip in Jan. Then two weeks later I went to the annual winter camp with my youth group girls. Since we had decided that this camera was in for the long haul at this point (it actually got dropped from my hands onto pavement in DLR....:rolleyes1), I put it in the cell phone pocket of my travel bag. Well, on the way home I went to take a picture of something on the bus, and the screen was completely and totally cracked. It still works, just fine actually. Picture quality, flash, zoom, all the same. Oh, but you have no idea what you're shooting at. ;)

Camera Four - :confused3 No idea. DH wants me to get a camera that can be dropped. Which I understand, I mean seriously, see above :rotfl: ...I'm a clumsy mess sometimes. But we also doesn't want to spend that much, seeing as my last year with cameras has been so awful. Olympus carries a line of cameras that are waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, dustproof and crushproof. Basically, they're made for people to take snowboarding, kayaking, camping, snorkling...but I'm taking it to Disney. They range from $130-$450 (they have six, three came out last year, three this year).

Can someone just pick out a camera for me, tell me that the price I'm paying is absolutely the best deal I'll ever find, order it for me and just be done with it?

Oh vey...how do I make any decisions?

Ok...thanks for reading, (if you did!), I appreciate it. But either way, I am curious to know, I can't be the only one who has ever dropped, cracked, scratched, broke a camera before, right? What cameras do you all use?

The best way to pick a camera?

Eeney meeney miney moe.

:lmao::lmao::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Okay, seriously? I really don't have a clue. I just go with a price range and get the best deal in that range. Then again, that's not saying much. I have the Cybershot, and I'm happy with it. Sure, its not awesome-sauce, but it works for me. And I almost know how to use it. :rotfl:

We bought a Kodak Zi6 a few years ago, and the screen cracked in DH's pocket. We got to use it just a couple of times on our Disney trip, but we missed all the good stuff because of the cracked screen. He never even bumped anything hard (he says). :(

I wish you luck in your camera search and hope someone can offer some grand advice! :goodvibes Let us know what you decide!

We have a Fugi s5000 and really love it. It's an old model now though. We bought it right before DD6 was born. We've dropped it and banged it up plenty and *fingers crossed* it's never broken. (OH PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LET IT BREAK now that I've just uttered those words!!!!) It has the 10x optical zoom which I love and will always have from now on!

I know that they have come out with other updated models since that one and I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat. In fact, I think we'll be ready to update before the year is out. The highest megapixel this one takes is 6 (which tells you how old it is!).

Whatever you decided, make sure that you look at reviews online to see what other people say about the model you're looking at.

Oh no, poor cracked screen! That is totally something I would do...glad you like your cybershot. My cybershot lasted through college and all kinds of camps/retreats/vacations. So who knows how many times it was dropped, bumped, scratched...:rolleyes1

Can I just say that your comments always make me :rotfl:. You remind me of one of my friends that moved away a few years ago, with terms like, "awesome-sauce" and "einey meany..." Always makes me laugh, so thanks!

Oh NO! I hope I have not passed my clumsiness onto others! I'm sure your camera will be fine. I think I am just cursed or something now..."Pirates of the Carribbean: Curse of the Dropped Camera" - or maybe not....haha.

Yes, 6MP does date the camera a little. But as long as you can take em, you like em, and more importantly, you probably know that camera like the back of your hand, its a gem! My cybershot was like that - I could switch it on and pick the right setting without looking at it. During our Disney trips, it was permanently attached to my wrist and I would almost freak out if it wasn't there. It was like a bracelet or ring that you always wear, so when you don't feel it, you get worried!

I've never dropped mine. :rolleyes1 Ever.

:lmao::rotfl2:

DH laughed at me last night because I dropped it at the Spring Carnival. :sad2:

And I'm glad that I amuse someone. While its never my intention to amuse others (only myself), I'm glad my purpose has been served. :p

You're welcome.

I bought a camera!!!! Its an Olympus Stylus Tough 6020. Its last year's model, (this year's is called the TG-610), but I got a factory refurbished deal for under $140, shipped! It will be here, in my hands, by next Wednesday. I cannot wait to use it!

This camera is waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, crushproof...or so it says. I don't intend on shocking, crushing, dusting, or throwing it in water. I, do, however, plan on the inevitable bump, scratch, whoops on our trip. I cannot wait to put it through my hands on a Disney trip.

And if I hate the camera? I'll sell it back on ebay (models that are two years old are still selling in the $80-100 range right now. And then buy either this super awesome, although, expensive, Sony waterproof/crushproof camera whenever a deal comes out or the brand new model, TG-610. Good plan? maybe. We shall see!

I'll post pictures when I get it. :cool1:

I knew it.

I knew that no one else had ever dropped a camera except me. :lmao:

DH never turns down a moment to remind me of my clumsiness (in a "I love you and you're funny" sort of way...). Just the other night we were out celebrating my birthday and I was like, "Awww, I wish I had my camera to take pictures of all of this..." and before I knew it, he's telling me and the friends nearby at the time how I drop cameras and break things...:rolleyes1 And then laughs, and gives me a hug while I'm sure I give just the most hideous, "really?" type look. :sad2: And then I end up laughing, cuz everyone around me is talking about all the times they've dropped things and lost things...oh losing things. I'm good at that too...;)

Just catching up. Happy Belated Birthday! :bday:: I remember when I turned 1/4 Century. Seems so long ago! :lmao:

Great that you got a new camera.

I had a Kodak Easyshare for the longest time that I loved. DX7000?? Something like that. Then all of a sudden it started with error messages. Then I couldn't get it to charge or transfer pix through the dock. Luckily I had talked my DM into buying the same camera about 1 yr. after I did when I saw one at Sam's for just over $100-last one. I paid almost $400 for mine. So I started using hers to charge my batteries and transfer photos. Then her's started to do the same thing.

When I was buying my new camera (finally) at Sam's (Kodak Easy Share Z915) I mentioned to the cashier that I was replacing my Kodak that stopped working. She asked me where I bought it, I told her Sam's. She said if you have the receipt you can bring it back. I told her it had been like 4 years. She said it didn't matter-Really? I was going to have to check that out!

Sure enough, I took it back to Sam's and they fully refunded my money! :cloud9: They weren't 100% happy about it but they did it anyway. I just had to have the photo department look at it and that was all. I also told my DSis, who was having a problem with hers as well, and she got a refund too.

(Note-Sam's no longer does this, they have a one year policy now-I think it's one year, may be less)

I know have to take my Z915 back (and I love it!) because it is starting to have problems. Sometimes it doesn't turn off, the LCD screen will start to go all green, and I can't reset the date. I have to remove the batteries and reinstall them to get it to come back on. Luckily I bought it about 7 months ago, and I bought the extra 1 year warranty (based on my cams previous performance) It was about $11 for the warranty. They no longer carry the same camera so it looks like I'll have to use the refund to buy a slightly more expensive one.

Okay, enough about me, back to you......

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

Wow! Four years later?! That's great that the employee told you about their policy (well, policy at the time) and that you paid much less for the new camera! I can understand why they didn't advertise it and aren't doing the "as long as you own it" policy anymore! But a year is still a pretty good deal for a flat out refund. My new camera comes with a year warranty and I plan to keep all the paperwork just in case!

Bummer about all your camera issues in the first place, though. Interesting that it happened with both your mom's and sister's too. Until I started my research for a camera around Christmas, I didn't realize how temperamental and short lived most point and shoot cameras! My DM got a sony cybershot about a year after my DSis and I got ours. Her's was smaller, lighter, more zoom, pixels, ect. However, hers, which she used half as much as either of us, wore out before ours did...:confused3

Best of luck on your new search for a camera. Hopefully you can find one with a better lifespan. But I understand wanting to keep in the same brand/type. Even though they've updated everything and added hundreds of more features, Sony cameras are the easiest for me to use. I'm a tad nervous about learning this new one before the trip!

Ahhh...my work is just piling up on me...doesn't my boss know that now is the time for Disney planning craziness???

I have DH's birthday present pretty much ready to go. I have a card and everything. That is rare for me to have almost two weeks ahead of time! I'll post pictures later of the "hubby journal" that I made. It should be way cuter - but once again, high standards that I set for myself. For what it is, and the time/effort invested. I'm proud! I got him two small gifts which each have a story behind them. One is the "Hidden Mickeys" book, and the other just wouldn't make sense to anyone, so I'm not sharing. :thumbsup2 My plan is to give him the journal on the plane and then the rest of the stuff he'll get in the morning.

Ok - thats all for now. Eleven days...oh man!:banana::banana:

I've decided to do a countdown list to spice up my PTR.

10 things I'm looking forward to eating (or drinking):

  1. Dole Whip
  2. Staring Rolls Cafe turkey sandwich
  3. Tonga Toast (first time!)
  4. Earl of Sandwich - Earl's Club
  5. Churro
  6. Specialty alcoholic drink (I'm undecided on which $10 concoction I'll get, but I'm open to suggestions!)
  7. Kona Cafe - anything and everything looks good there (first time!)
  8. Mickey Ice Cream Sandwich
  9. Beaches and Cream burger (first time!)
  10. Deserts at The Wave - you get three choices! (first time!)

Love it!!! But I must know the third gift, it doesn't matter how random it is!!! Let us guess WHY it is special!!! :lmao::rotfl2::lmao: The trip itself is gift enough! It got me to thinking of some of the crazy/fun/silly gifts I have given DH over the past twenty plus years...:rotfl::rotfl:

Love your top ten list, I MUST tr a Dole Whip sometime, I have never had one...sad, isn't it????:sad1::sad2::sad1:
