My dad recently had gastric bypass surgery, but we are hoping to have him join us on our upcoming January trip. Since the surgery, he can only eat about 2 oz at a meal. My question is whether or not he will be able to share meals (non-buffets, of course) with us since he obviously will not be able to eat a meal himself. We are planning on doing the dining plan as well, if that makes a difference.

Also, anyone whose had the surgery care to share their experience at Disney with eating post-surgery?

Thanks.

Other than the buffets or other all you care to eat restaurants and dinner shows, the only place at WDW that we've ever encountered a plate sharing fee was at Shula's. I'm not sure how V&A's would handle your request, but because of the reservation system there, I'd certainly discuss it before booking.

We've split entrees before because sometimes the portions are simply too large for one person, and we don't like to waste food.

There has been discussions on the Restaurants Forum and a few people have indicated that they show their card to the waiter at a buffet-type locations (at WDW) and generally will only be vcharged the child price, not the adult price. I do not know if this is official policy, or is just done to improve the Guest Experience.

If you are all staying in one room at WDW and have the dining plan, then each guest must purchase the dining plan. If he is in another room though he can choose not to purchase the plan and just get room and tickets for instance. From what I've heard about the dining plan you are not able to share with a guest not on the plan- this is why it might be a good idea to ask upfront and mention the issue to see if they can make an exception. The people I know who've had a bypass have had a card they show at restaurants to be charged children's pricing. At WDW though if he was able to purchase the dining plan at the child's rate then they do expect you to eat off the child's menu when available and this might not be such a good thing since the choices would be limited. This would be another exception though but if they could let him pay that pricing and just have a smaller amount for an adult menu meal or share then that might be the best solution.---Kathy

I am 8 years post op Gastric Bypass. I have no experience with the dining plan. Now I eat more like a normal small person so I never finish my food but I look at dining as an experince. My husband and I still share when ever possible today. If we dotn share I have a doggie bag to take with me for later.

I went when i was 6 months post op (No dining plan back then either) and every single sit down allowed me to eat of fhis plate no extra charge. We ate places like the Castle for dinner, the upstairs in Chef de France and many more I cannot remember this many years later. I never showed a card and I did tell them I had gastric Bypass and lost 100 pounds. All the waiters were very encouraging to me.

Now I never bother to even tell people. I do eat a close to half a plate of food now and sometimes while on vacation Ill take it with me and sometimes leave it. Its always good to get a discount when you can but I never expect it

Early post op I had a tougher time finding food and never ever order off the kids menu. Now a days they are getting better but back then it was always the most unhealthy foods around. Early on it was hard to avoid the bread (A definite pouch filler early on) and beef was never a good choice but now I can do all that.

I think things have changed with the dining plan regarding rules on sharing, at least others have posted that they will not allow sharing with someone who is not on the dining plan also. For a special needs situation I'm not sure what they would do or if they make any exceptions. I know when they first started the DDP they would not allow someone on tube feeding to NOT have the dining plan if others in the party had it. No exceptions. The res agents at that time suggested just not to put that person on the ressie and then buy their tickets at time of arrival or order them beforehand. Of course this is for someone who would not be eating at all vs. someone who can only eat a smaller amount. To the previous poster...congratulations on losing 100 pounds!---Kathy
