Disney Day of Service

Great! Going to read it now!

I was going to do the FPs (there will be 6 in our group, so 6 days of FPs for all of us!) but I found out in that thread that you can upgrade the one day ticket you get, I can't ignore that kind of discount, gonna have to go with the ticket upgrade!

We are signed up to fill easter eggs for the Salvation Army, looking forward to doing the shopping and the work together as a family, helping others. A good lesson for the kids!

The trick is you need to start with just the volunteer ticket. Then you can pay the difference to get whatever kind of ticket you want (getting $79 credit or whatever the price for a one day base ticket is when you redeem it). You cannot, for example, start with a 3 day ticket and then try to use your volunteer ticket for $79 towards making it a 10 day ticket (there is no combining two tickets to make a third one).

so in that case, probably the best course of action (even if i would be getting a hotel+dining), would be to get the tickets once you get to the first park on the first day there? then you could upgrade to a multi-day ticket for the difference in cost? or do you have to get tickets with a WDWTC hotel + dining purchase?

sorry if i'm asking too many questions.

We're doing a door-to-door canned food drive, tomorrow, for our community food pantry :goodvibes. I am so excited and am looking forward to be a part of something so positive. Unfortunately, there is rain in our forecast and I got an email from the organizer saying we'll be notified if they have to reschedule. I'm really hoping the weather cooperates.

Those of you having such a hard time finding anything, why not just do Project Linus? There are plenty of them that will accept mail in donations. This may be your easiest option.

Our troop all got their vouchers, and we are good to go!

Lisabarr-- Do you know of any specific that accept mail donations? Thanks

Not Lisabarr, but we are mailing ours to the Morgantown, WV chapter. The national chapter in IL also accepts mail-in donations. To find the national chapter, just type in Walt Disney World, FL in the search box for city. :thumbsup2

Well, we did another day of service today. For some reason, the sign up doesn't recognize my husband as a Lead/Adult volunteer so I couldn't get him signed up without me attending (and doing another volunteer day)......so we all went to do the Bowling Special Olympics today.

It was AWESOME! The students came in busloads and we each had 2 lanes to monitor. There were plenty of teachers and adult helpers there as well as us. We stayed from 9-12:30 and we all really enjoyed it all.

And, as an added bonus, attending a special olympics event is a requirement for my older boys' scouting badge! :thumbsup2

Now we just need ONE MORE opportunity as my youngest wasn't eligible to do this one for credit, it was only ages 10 and up.

If you are doing a package through Disney, you generally need to buy a one day base ticket. We are going during free dining, so we have to buy a one day base ticket to go with the package. We are buying the base ticket and having it removed from our room key and issued as a paper ticket (which we won't use). We will enter the park on our first day using the volunteer voucher and upgrade that to the 10 day park hoppers we want. We will save the one day base ticket we bought as part of our package for another time. Since it is unused, it will never expire and it would be able to be upgraded on our next trip to whatever we want to have for a ticket at that time.

We did our time on Saturday and it was a pretty easy one. We handed out programs and took tickets for a local children's performance. Then we got to watch the show...which was for preschoolers and my 9 yr old son wasn't thrilled about it. After the show we handed out coloring sheets. Not too bad for three tickets to Disney!

Just a FYI, if your having trouble signing up someone from your group, call 407-827-5990 and a Disney Rep. will help you. I signed my husband and I for an affair in March and there was only 2 spots available. Yesterday I checked the opportunities available and 1 spot was open for the same event (maybe someone cancelled or they needed an additional person) but it kept giving me an error message that we were already signed up even though he wasn't signed up for anything. I called the number and they took care of it. It took about 16 hrs to show in the computer that it was corrected.:cool1:

We did our Day of Service, on Saturday, and it was AWESOME!!! I had such a wonderfully, fulfilling time with my family and watching my son get excited every time he would explain that we were collecting for the community food pantry. In fact, we've decided to start doing something weekly, to participate and benefit our city's most needy people. This was a wonderful experience and reminded me that there are things and situations bigger than me- and I needed that!!! I, almost, cried when I listened to the organizers describe how families would show up on the doorsteps of the church, asking for food. I'm not blind or naive, but when you get wrapped up in your own daily life, it's easy to turn a blind eye to those suffering, around you. I just really needed to be reminded, of how much, I've lost myself and I'm grateful, for this experience.

That is AWESOME that it was so fulfilling! Also wonderful you found something you could do with your son, I haven't seen much available around here for the under 18 group.

DH and I got a 2-hour sign-up helping in the kitchen/clean-up for an event that a local Center for Diabetes Education is hosting. I couldn't wait to tell my friend, her granddaughter has juvenile diabetes started attending camp there last summer and loved every minute of it!

My DD just turned 4, I just wish they had some alternative for the little ones who are ticket holders like the kids 6 and older. Not a free day, but even if they could just earn a VolunEARS pin (like the birthday/anniversary pin at Guest Services they give out for free) or something small like a coloring book, etc... Recently she went through all her stuffed animals and donated some to the local animal shelter when we dropped off old towels and linens. I was proud she was willing to part with some stuffed animals at the age of 4! She is also good about if something doesn't fit her anymore, she knows to put it in hamper that we bring to donate.

I agree, I think they should have something for the younger kids who require a ticket but are too young to volunteer. I'm sure they felt that it would be too hard on these organizations to find something for a 4 yr old to do, but it would of been nice to include them somehow.

we are finally signed up for april 1 !!!!! woohoo we are going to make 25 goodies bags of cookies 3 in each bag and then drop them off. then the lady will take them to homeless people !!!!

i am so excited

I just signed up to make hygeine kits for the homeless. This sounds like a lot of fun and I can't wait to go shopping for stuff and make the bags when my son comes to visit this weekend so I can take pictures of our assembly line. They said 1 kit per person to qualify but I am going to try and make 5 for each of us so that is 15 kits. It is for a good cause in addition to the ticket so I don't mind spending the money. After we drop them off in Tustin, CA next Tuesday my daughter and I will go to Disneyland for the afternoon!

It was hard finding something for us all to do as my 16yr old Son only comes home 2x a month and my daughter is 13 so options were limited. Organizations are still inundated with requests too.

we are off to Dollar tree, big lots and the .99 store to see what we can find. I never know how people get things for free using coupons but I don't get the paper and always forget I have them anyway. :lmao:

We completed our Day of Giving today. We had signed up to make a theme gift basket for a local children's place to use for their auctions later in the year and the other was to make craft kits for children in the Children's hospital (both actually fell under the same hospital/charity gorup). It was so much fun making the craft kits but really sad knowing that some of the children that would need them are suffering very badly.

My kids spent some of their own money for the supplies for both and that made me so much more proud of them as I was okay with paying. They so wanted to help contribute financially as well. I do plan to volunteer some of my time with the Children's hospital in the future.

My daughter and I went shopping tonight and spent $65 on supplies to make 15 hygiene kits. Totally worth it for 3 $79 tickets in return. I can't wait until my son is here so I can take pictures of us assembling them.
