Disney Day of Service

I am busy working on Project Linus blankets. My chapter requires 6 per person, and I have to help my son and husband. It is fun though and I intend to continue to make them after qualifying for the Disney promotion. (But i will then look for small remnants on sale)

They want single layer, and I still need to decide how to cut the fringe.

We orginally were going to do the 'no sew' option but at the last minute I picked up satin blanket binding (WalMart has it for half the price over JoAnn's). Our girls are too young but enjoyed helping and wanted to be the ones to give it to the children in the hospital :lovestruc

Here are the finished products: two for the boys and two for the girls....

Now we just need to agree on a drop off date.....

No, I looked at my options, but everything was too far away. Maybe I could talk my family into volunteering together if we do end up going to Florida this summer, I'm pretty sure my dad would, he'll do anything to save some money.

Has anyone redeemed their's yet? My son will be 1 week shy of his sixth birthday for our trip. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck being able to utilize a under 6 child.
TIA!

I am pretty sure they have to be 6 at the time of service and you have to provide proof of age for the child before submitting for a voucher.

On Friday my family and I went and delivered Meals on Wheels and this morning our tickets were in my email. That was quick! What a great experience, and my children were definitely moved by it.

My family made the no-sew blankets for Project Linus. We had a lot of fun making them and DD19 found a new hobby. This morning I got the Disney vouchers in the email :cool1: This program is awesome for promoting volunteerism and the ease of signing up and getting the vouchers:thumbsup2

My first grade Girl Scout Daisy troop and their families made blankets for Project Linus in Orlando. I dropped off 62 of them to the coordinator on Saturday. She told me that she was going to take some to Sanford airport where there were Haitian children arriving later that night. Well, they were on the news this morning wrapped in the blankets we made!:woohoo: Talk about a good feeling to see the kids that we were helping. And to know that they were going for a really good cause.

My family signed up and went to a pin making project for the Hydrocephalus Organization this past weekend. It was about 25 miles from our home. Actually we signed up for a Feb date that was local, but when it came back as confirmed, they sent us further away and moved up the date to the upcoming weekend. :confused3 It happened to work for us, and I was thrilled to be done and not have it hanging over our heads.
We have also signed up for two other volunteer opportunities (to gather some community service hours for my HS'er) so, its a Wonderful way to get a handle on some opportunities that we may not have known of otherwise. Since I have a "shy one" it is also a way to go together as a family and it "works" for us.
At first there was nothing remotely close to us, but then things started popping up, so keep checking the site ....WooHoo!
We're awaiting our vouchers/notice.....we just wait right?? :confused3

WOW! Awesome! Made my Day! What a great way to "show" others how much of an impact volunteerism REALLY means!!! :cheer2::cheer2:

Has anyone signed up and not heard back yet. I signed up right away on the first day to help collect clothes for a local church. According to the home page we should hear from them within 5 days. I still have not heard anything. They are now full so I am not sure if I should pick another one or wait until closer to our service date (Feb 20). I can not find any way to contact them either.
Thanks for any advice.

I signed up last week for one that was just posted and never heard back either, so I looking for more today.

Some take longer than others to contact you. I requrested info from 3 different ones, one called me the very same day, another emailed me 4 days later, and the last I just heard from on Friday, 3 weeks later! I signed up with the first two. I konw we will only get one ticket, but I want my son to get the feel of volunteering.

One son and I did the coat drive today.

Now 3 of us still need something. There are only 4 opportunities near us for under age 18! And only ONE for age 6. I may email them an interest and see what comes of it.

Dawn

I completed my day of service on Friday and am anxiously awaiting my voucher email...

Remember for those who don't have something local, you can search for other activities that allow you to mail the item (Project Linus fleece blankets, as an example).

For my service project I had to create a spreadsheet of contact information, which I was able to do on-line and then email to the non-profit organization. It was titled "office work, internet research" or something like that. I applied saying I was interested but could only do work from home. They said, no problem.

I do lots of service things for our community- two of them qualify for "give a day, get a Disney day" so, I signed my family up to do a "day" of service, which ours is fulfilled in 3 hours...

My question is...for people who are buying packages (hotel, tickets, transportation) from Disney, is it really THAT great of a deal to get a free day? I don't think that it is, considering- adding on an extra day of tickets is so cheap ($6 per person or something close to that). I having nothing wrong with donating my time for our community- my family does it a few times a year...but Why would I (or others doing packages through Disney) think that it's a 'great deal' to get a free day?

Is this ment more for locals? Or people who aren't already planning a week (or longer in our case) trip just to go to disney? I don't think Disney NEEDS to offer me free days for doing services for our community- and others would do them as well. I think it's a great idea to get more people doing things for their community and Disney is doing a good service...I'm just confused as to why people getting week or longer packages would think that this one day ticket is that great of a deal. I'm not trying to say anything is wrong, I just have questions about it. I don't know all the info. apparently.

Well, for our family...we do a week in Orlando but only a few of those days at Disney. This time we are taking just our youngest, who <gasp> isn't a huge Disney fan! She loves Epcot, but not the other parks. So, with this promotion we will do a day at Epcot for free during our trip. We will also do Sea World, Aquatica and Busch Gardens (also free btw!). The only parks we will be paying for is Universal to see the new Harry Potter Park! Score!

How did you get the free Sea World tickets?

We volunteer from time to time as well and while this is a GREAT incentive for many.....it just wasn't really worth it for us since we do a package deal. Even if we did something like project linus (blankets....which we may still do since it's such a great project), the cost of material...etc even for the simplest of blankets would cost us more than an extra day at Disney. Not to mention they only allow you 6 vouchers and we are a family of 7.....so we've not signed up for anything.

Still, I think it's great that they are getting people to volunteer when they wouldn't have normally done so. We may still do a few of the opportunities in our area just to add to our volunteer experiences.

I admit, my husband and I are doing it for the special fastpasses.

We are going in July, have 2 small kids and getting up for rope drop ain't gonna happen. In July you need some advantage with the crowds -- thus, the special fastpasses for up to 5 other people. We'll have annual passes anyway, so won't need the extra day.

My sister's family is doing it b/c they have about 4-5 leftover tickets per person from their trip 5 years ago. The are staying 10 days and this way they won't have to purchase any more tickets -- will do non-park days, DTD, water park, etc, but now they'll have an extra day for the park...they wouldn't normally just buy one more day.
