Disney Cruise with points

Hi there ,
My husband & I are buying a resale contract & are interested in using points for a cruise next fall. I was reading another thread & saw something about at least one person has to pay for the cruise-is this true? It would just be us & we were wanting to use points for both........HMMMMMMMMMM

No, I don't believe that is the case. We just booked a cruise with points. We had the option of also using points for our child, but we decided to pay cash for her instead.

Thanks for the quick response. We were planning to use some of the banked points from the contract we are buying--since the cruise costs so many points & we were really looking forward to being able to do this Fall 2006.

You're welcome Melanie. We just joined DVC last week and we already have our cruise booked for January. Had to borrow some of next year's points to make it happen. Also not staying in a room with a verandah, which normally we have. The points required to upgrade were just too many. Besides, we're really not in the room much to enjoy a verandah.

We also borrowed points for last years cruise..It was truely worth it..the cruise set us back for this years vacation.But go for it..It was a magical time..

When I researched Cruising I found that it would be cheaper to rent out my DVC points and pay cash for the Cruise. Of course to do this you have to hassle with renting out your points. Have any of you looked into this? I was wondering what you found and if I'm right or wrong about this.

We can't even imagine using as many points as it costs to pay for the cruise so we rent out the number of points we would need and pay cash much easier and far more profitable.

I recently booked a cruise with points for next Feb 06. DH, DS4, DS1 and I are all going on points, we are not paying cash. We have a catagory 8 room on deck 6. It cost 453 points. To book with cash it would have cost $4250. If we rent the points at $10, we would come out ahead $280. Plus $75 they charge for making the ressie. It was not worth the hassle of renting our points and following up for the $355 to us, but as you can see, renting the points if you want to go through the hassle and follow up, can let you come out ahead. Whether you use the points, or rent them, make sure you go, because the cruise is FANTASTIC !!!!!! Good Luck !!!!!!!!!!!!

We rented out our points for 12-15 a point and have Cat 11 rooms as we have 5 in our family so we just got 2 staterooms we are paying for our oldest daughter to stay in one with my inlaws. We came out well ahead over 1200.00 ahead to be close to the ammount.

SpoonfulofSugar-- We have cruised, 7 night Eastern in 2000. The best vacation we've ever taken. Since then we've had 2 more children for a total of 4. Now we need 2 cabins for the 6 of us and the cruising cost has doubled. When I was calculating renting vs using points I was doing it for 2 cabins which doubles the number you save. From what I remember the savings was well over $1000. I wouldn't mess with renting out points for a $300 savings either. Too much hassle. Have a wonderful cruise

As you book closer to the cruise date, the cash rates for the cruise go up, and the points cost becomes more in-sync with the cash price. We booked the 7-day early, and also have to book two cabins. Renting points/paying cash saved us >200 points. That's not chump change, that's an entire second vacation!! Plus, with small kids, the necessity to cancel is more likely. I do not want to get stuck with 652 ressie points that I have to trade for a Disney collection resort. For us, booking on points has equal, if not more perils than renting out points. It's a matter of planning. If you book/rent early enough and are patient, you could rent your points to one person in a single transaction. That eliminates the "hassle aspect" of making multiple reservations for 6 or 7 different parties.

Of course you may use points to pay for both of you.

Some people prefer to pay for some of their party with points and the rest with cash. If you decide to pay for some people with cash, at least one person per cabin has to pay with points (adult point cost). The cash price paid for the other persons will be the one that DVC negotiated with DCL. It might be higher or lower than the cash price currently being offered by DCL for the same cruise.

DH and I did a cruise on points in Febraury 2004. Member Services was great about booking the cruise. DH and I were looking for Cat 7 and the member services rep managed to find us one of the obstructed Cat 6 rooms with a full verandah (considered Cat 7 because of a small beam going across one corner of the verandah) We loved the room, even better than a true Cat 6 we had been in on our 2000 cruise.
